Always wanted to visit and so glad we did.
This is a site that is expertly presented and is steeped in history, right back to William the Conqueror. There used to be both a castle and a cathedral as well as a community of people living there. Due to the schism between the Church and the Crown Salisbury was chosen as the site for a new cathedral and the scene was set for the rise of Salisbury and the decline of Old Sarum.
Nice gift shop, friendly, helpful and extremely knowledgeable staff!
We can recommend the Damson Gin liqueur!
Oh yes, and the panoramic views are stunning!

Old Sarum is an important historical place in Norman England. Shortly after his victory, William the Conqueror made Old Sarum an administrative center with the motte and bailey castle and cathedral whose foundations are still there. It is here on the circular hill castle where William was presented the Domesday Book, an account of his new kingdom.

Like all buildings of this time, only a few fragmented walls survive, but they show the scale and importance of the buildings. The guide book gives you a wonderful picture of how they looked and how they were used; as well as the significance to the history of the UK.

It also has some spectacular views of the surrounding areas.

and if you are lucky, you get a flying display from the local flying club.

Sometimes the best trip experiences come from unexpected surprises. We were in the Salisbury area because we were traveling from Bath to Canterbury and definitely were visiting Stonehenge. However, we had no real plans outside of Stonehenge, so I did some research on places.

After William, the site waned in importance; however, it is the site of one of the most bizarre circumstances in the English church.

The foundations of a massive cathedral can still be seen on your visit; however, the church was moved because the sheriff would not allow the seated bishop to enter Old Sarum. This in turn prompted the creation of New Sarum (Salisbury) and its enormous cathedral, supposed by legend to be where an arrow shot from Old Sarum landed.

After looking for things to visit and reading the history, I decided we would stop here.
Our visit occurred on a cold December day where traces of snow were still present in the castle bailey. You drive up the first set of walls where the town was to park before walking up to the castle. There is a slight charge but well worth the experience.

From there we walk around the walls to view the site as well as great views of Salisbury. My Florida children even enjoyed scraping together the snow remnants for a small snowball fight. For us we got to see something of historical significance, have some fun and enjoy beautiful views over the city of Salisbury. Looking back, it was a favorite experience for everyone on the trip and totally unexpected.

Walked up from Salisbury city centre, its a pleasant stroll as you can detour the park rather than on the busy main road. We had a good walk round the outer ramparts, and the cathedral foundations, and yes the views are magnificent, then on to the inner castle run by English Heritage, bought tickets and Graham pointed out various bits and told us about the history of Old Sarum, (must admit the chat did drift into Luton going down and Southampton in the playoffs), Graham was friendly and knowledgeable.
We strolled around the old walls, admired the views and imagined what it must have been like centuries ago, pretty cold in the Winter I should think, certainly invokes a sense of history.
Back to the shop/ticket place where we enquired about EH membership and decided to join, so while I sorted the membership with Sarah and Dan, Graham plied Mrs C with some tasters of mead, and back we walked to Salisbury with our new membership bag and Mrs C giggling from mead!
We both enjoyed Old Sarum and the friendly staff/guides made it a very pleasant visit.

And Graham, congrats to the Saints, hope you can survive next season

Visited to primarily see the site of the old Cathedral, but viewed the castle remains as well. Parking was odd, as the machine declined my card payment, accepted cash however, but printed the date as the day before. We reported this when we paid the entry fee. Good historic information plaques, and the guide was informative. Some great views of the surrounding countryside.

At Old Sarum you can park at the top of the entrance (paid via app). Nice to see and read about the history. Difficult to clearly see the size and structure of the ground. At the very top you have a beautiful view of Salisbury and the cathedral.

We caught the Stonehenge tour bus so got off here and thought we’d give it a try. On entrance we were told our EH passes were not valid despite the fact they were until the end of the month and we were allowed in “as a goodwill gesture”. We were made to feel like we were at fault when it was a system error. (We have since received an apology from the company for the way we were treated and the way it was handled by staff). Lovely views from the site but it’s a quick visit as there isn’t anything to do other than wander around and look at the views.

.......from the ' newer ' existing Cathedral in Salisbury is a bit of a trek and mostly uphill but so worth the effort. There is an entrance fee but it is so impressively well kept that I'm glad to finally see the old site Castle and foundations of the original.
Great views and good bus transport links to and from the site.

Excellent hilltop location of the old fortress of Salisbury (of which quite a few substantial walls remain) and the foundations of the original Salisbury Cathedral. Excellent place for a stroll round. For a fee (or free for English Heritage members) you can go into the inner motte of the old castle and see the remains up close. Don't miss the chance to peer down into the depths of the medieval royal toilets. Great views all round of Salisbury and the Wiltshire countryside. ideal place to visit if you are travelling with your canine companion as they will love it.

This is a great place to visit but visitors need to treat it with the respect it deserves.

The site is easily accessible and with ample car parking. It is free for English heritage members or £3 for non members however the machine was broken during my visit.

There is a small portakabin type ticket kiosk and shop on site.

It is only a small site to walk around with the ruins of the fort/cathedral remaining with various information boards dotted around.

I found it disappointing that even though this is a historic site, people seem to use it more as a place to take their dogs and let them run free off the lead. With that, there was dog excrement all over the site - which when you have young children stepping in it is very annoying.
