Great place to visit. The architecture and furnishings in the castle are amazing. Excellent food in the cafe. Best bara brith I’ve ever tasted and all reasonably priced. I’m told by the young lady serving that it is locally made.

Great place to visit, staff very knowledgeable and helpful. Sadly, due to the weather, we didn't get a chance to see the grounds, but the castle alone is worth a visit.

The castle is beautifully situated and very interesting to look around. They have done a great job of talking about the troubling way in which the landowner made his money, slavery and exploitation of local workers in the slate mines. However the whole experience was made difficult by the extreme low lighting in the interior. I do understand that they need to protect fabrics etc, but the written notices/explanations were nearly impossible to read.

Stunning castle. Lots of rooms to view with the original furniture. The ceilings are amazing in themselves. The detail on all the woodwork, ceilings, even stairways was so beautiful showing amazing craftsmanship. There were staff working around some of the areas who were great at answering questions, so friendly. Would love to go back when more rooms are open (was told by staff that they are constantly working on preservation and opening more areas). Coffee shop was lovely, really good coffee & scones. Would visit again and see both castle & gardens as we only had time for the castle on this visit. LOVED IT.

Sad to say we werr a little disappionted with this excursion. We had too much time on our hands and not a guide to inform us of much of anything. Interesting enough, but I guess I'm too spoiled being told what to look for on my own

My wife, daughter, adult grand-daughter and dog visited. We were all seduced into paying the £14 entrance fee but since dogs are not allowed in the castle I spent most of my time in the gardens. I became to suspect that if you don't want to enter the castle you can visit the gardens for free but the staff have been advised not to bring this to your attention. Instead they suggest you can alternate entering the castle with looking after the dog outdoors. So if you have a dog please ask about this. Also the cafes are very expensive. Taking a packed lunch and picnicing in the gardens could save you paying for expensive meals and drinks. Jacket potato with veggie chilli £8.30..

I generally avoid National Trust houses but needs must when you need somewhere out of the Summer rain and wind.
The 'castle' itself gets 3½ stars: It's big enough to kill an hour or two with plenty to see and the rooms, contents and architecture are fabulous. We saw a couple of places where you could get food and the toilets were nice and clean. The only thing that lets it down is the whole 'concrete' vibe of the exterior.
The garden gets half a star: plenty of space to sit or wander, and the walled garden would look stunning when in full bloom.
The final star goes to the staff/volunteers - something I very rarely do, but the ones here went above and beyond.
The day before, my daughter had decided to celebrate her birthday by going up a mountain, getting within 200yds of the waterfall we had come to see, and then promptly falling into a divot while giddy at finding a fairy circle. It was touch and go whether it was going to be a call to mountain rescue and an evening in A&E, but my partner managed to carry her back down. Even so, her ankle was now twice the size and her whole foot a lovely swirl of purples, blues and blacks.
Hobbling into the castle ticket office this was picked up on by the staff, who immediately asked us if we wanted taking up to the castle entrance on the golf cart. At the entrance, the lady also gave us a wheelchair which, thanks to the great access, we were able to use everywhere apart from the upper floor of the house (my daughter just about managed to limp through that part).
As we were leaving the same lady spotted us, called for the golf cart to pick us up for the return journey and took the wheelchair back for us.
Obviously, this wasn't special treatment, as they go out of their way to help anyone with mobility problems access the castle and grounds.
It's a nice couple of hours out, or a full day if it stops raining and you have a picnic, and it's one of the better NT properties I've visited with regard to the friendly welcome and relaxed attitude all round.

What a great place to visit!
Staff were friendly and provided lots of interesting information regarding the decor inside the house. The grounds are lovely and you could spend hours here enjoying a picnic. Would highly recommend!

Impressive. We enjoyed the visit, we knew prior to visiting that the house was historically named ( castle ) and the imposing exterior could be viewed as such, but those people who have visited medieval castles, such as Conwy or Caernarfon would not see similar things here.
It is a grand stately home, and has quite a history attached...research the story of the industrial unrest before you visit, and it helps with the experience.
Do not miss the one ton slate bed...the bedroom floor must be fantastically strengthened to cope with that!
The utilitarian staircase on the visiting route is solid and impressive in it's own way...but the grand staircase near the end of the tour is truly magnificent.
The gardens are nice...not spectacular, but the views from outside the house are impresive.
There is a small rail museum attached to the house, this has articles from the slate industry narrow gauge railway history, from which the first owners made their fortune. There are also some models in glass cases.
Victorian kitchen completes the tour...decent cafe, as usual for a NT property.
There is a disabled carpark near the house...if you park in the normal carparks, you can get a lift up to the house, or tackle the quite steep climb.
If in the area, well worth a visit, especially if you are an NT member...not far away is Plas Newydd and Beaumaris castle, Anglesey....also close is Welsh Mountain Zoo.

There is disabled access to all areas outside.
Inside there is disabled access to some areas. There are areas with stepped access which would make it very challenging for someone with mobility issues

Hi Bambi - Dogs are allowed in the garden on leads, everywhere except the Adventure Playground.
Assistance dogs only in the Castle and Castle cafe.
Dogs can sit in the Stables Cafe - this is only open at peak times usually - but you can buy at the Castle and take food and drinks there to enjoy.
Hope that helps.

is it possible to photograph inside the castle with a tripod ?
Skrevet 19. juni 2018
Probably best to contact them and ask.
Photography for personal use without flash is permitted inside. However some of the rooms are on the dark side so a tripod would help.
Personally I have a monopod and I doubt they'd object to that (or even recognise what it was !!), I also have a small hand-size tripod that works well (as long as not using big lenses).
They may have restrictions on where you might be able to use it and because of furnishings and valuables they might prefer a tripod not to be used.

I’m planning on visiting the castle this Monday we are a family of three my son is in Home Schooling and 16 years old. Is there a cost to enter if so discounts for families and free entrance for students?
Skrevet 24. mars 2018
Yes there are charges for entry including discounts for families. This is an expensive property to maintain so you shouod have no problem helping out or better still join The National Trust as there are more attractions in the area. They offer family discounts too.

Hi.. can you Tell me the distance from the University?
Skrevet 23. februar 2018
Hi,
The main entrance is approximately 2 miles from the centre of Bangor and there is a bus service that runs to there. However, there is a 1 mile drive up to the Visitor Reception and Castle itself.
