Fascinating history told about the Insole family

This was a convenient bus ride from Cardiff city center to Black Lion, then a short walk to the property. The grounds are beautiful, including a stunning cedar of Lebanon tree. There was an event booked at the home while I was there, but I was still able to tour the rest of the rooms downstairs and then I took the special audio tour they have of the upstairs. Very well done! While in each room you hear the story of the family told through speakers strategically placed in the room so it sounds like you were overhearing conversations. Unique and personal way to tell the story. The weather was lovely so I grabbed a bite to eat at the café and sat outside to enjoy the scenery. Lovely tranquil setting.

Poor Service and over priced

Met my friend in the coffee shop for lunch. We arrived around 11.30. I just fancied some poached eggs and was told I couldn’t order that as they had changed their menu. I asked to speak to the manager which I did and was told the same thing that I could only order from the lunch menu which is very limited if a person has a medical condition, despite me advising him I had a medical condition which he ignored.
The coffee and tea arrived in paper cups and I managed to order some bacon which is streaky and very greasy. I will not voting with my feet and not go back to this coffee shop there are nicer venues in the surrounding area to visit. I found the menu very limiting and over priced. Poor quality food and dreadful customer service . If I could have given less than 1 star I would have.

Very good then very bad

Was having a great day until John at the cafe told us kitchen was closed in a very rude manor, repeatedly (even though it had been open for 15 minutes). Then charged 4.50 for a plain bread roll. Strongly advise John attends a customer service course.

Very poor. Spoilt by an aggressive rude man called John

Lovely day spoilt by a very rude and aggressive man called John at the Potting Shed. He was so unhelpful. Very upsetting. Charged me £4.50 for a bread roll. Shocking. His attitude spoilt the whole experience.

What a beautiful building! I went to Insole Court for an event with my business Lauren Deakin Interiors. It was my first visit and I will definitely be going again to enjoy the space indoors and out and just take it in and enjoy what it has to offer. Everyone was very friendly and I felt right at home too, ill be supporting local businesses and events there anyway I can, its a great space as a creative and as a period property lover I was enchanted my Insole Court. I am looking forward to my next visit!⚡️

Evening venue hire

This is a beautiful venue and ideal setting for a private event; we hired it for a private corporate Awards evening and used the Drawing room . We had approximately 50 guests and the room was set out Conference style which was ideal and plenty of room for it to be comfortable. The venue offers ample parking for guests and easy accessibility. We had the room from 5pm - 8pm and were lucky to have a warm summers evening, which also really showed the venue off at its best. Our guests could enjoy the gardens after our ceremony - ideal for more photo opportunities! We organised light refreshments from the Cafe team which were wonderful and went in a flash!

A Hidden Gem

I pre-arranged a group visit to Insole Court today. From the first time I rang and e-mailed, everybody was very pleasant and helpful. We all met in the reading room before taking the tour of upstairs 'The House is a Stage'. This gave an excellent insight of the life of the Insole Family and a taste of the times that they lived in. The audio tour is an excellent idea.
We all enjoyed our visit and our Guide for the tour, Di, was helpful and informative.
I would recommend a visit to anybody, both local and visitor.
The cafe is good, the toilets clean and tidy. Just what we all need on a day out.

An under-appreciated victorian mansion with a lot of history

Discovered this fascinating old house recently and amazed I had never come across it before. Run by enthusiastic volunteers who are happy to tell you the history and show you around the beautifully restored rooms. The innovative exhibition upstairs is worth experiencing too, telling the history of the house and family through an audio installation that leads you from room to room.

An excellent venue with helpful staff

From my first contact with the bookings person, Rhiannon, and throughout the experience of arranging a special birthday party at Insole Court, I received professional, courteous and helpful advice and assistance with the arrangements from all the staff. Laura and her two front of house colleagues, and the Security person who were on duty on the night of the party, were all absolutely lovely. Professional, courteous and helpful every one of them. And the guests loved the building, the room and the grounds. We all had a good time, in no small part due to the efforts of the excellent team at Insole Court. A Delightful Place to Spend an Hour or Two

Living in Cardiff I have no idea why it took us so long before we visited Insole Court. The local community founded the restoration of this wonderful house and now it is enjoyed by the local community and by visitors from far and wide. There is nothing grand or pretentious about the house and grounds but it is a building steeped in history that can be enjoyed by all ages. The grounds are beautiful and relaxing and the house towers over them. The interior has been renovated and there are excellent descriptive cards written in both Welsh and English which describe the key features of each area. It is well worth search for the 'parrot' in the reading, this to me was the most fabulous of the downstairs rooms.
It is a great place to visit and can be enjoyed for free, there is parking available.
