I've had surprisingly uneven experiences with archives in doing family history. The historical society in my hometown was helpful and well organized, while a major city public library where my ancestors once lived seemed to discourage genealogy in its genealogy section. I mention this because I probably should have had more realistic expectation of PRONI.
The organization of things is entirely what you might not expect--the reading room is not for reading readily available documents. One needs to check-in to the facility daily but no one mentions this---your ID key opens the various doors. The main room for self research isn't intuitive in its layout (e.g., the different functions of the the computers are not spelled out) and the two staff on duty were a study in contrasts--one wasn't particularly helpful while the other had a very specific approach to research and wouldn't hear of anything else.
I recommend reading something like "Researching Your Irish Ancestors" by John Grenham and having a clear idea of what you want to research that isn't readily available on line. Even with this and documentation of what you have already, you still may find yourself dealing with characters who impeded rather than facilitate and the organization of things doesn't seem immediately helpful. Because of when my ancestors emigrated ad the state of records at that time, I didn't expect to find a lot (and didn't) but did hope the process would be a little more pleasant. Hopefully, your experience will be better.

Today (22 November 2023) was my first time in the Public Records Office. It can be quite intimidating and overwhelming going into a place like this. I had been meaning to go there for some time and today I had some down time and so was able to go.
The man and woman on reception were lovely and accomodating and told me what to do, where I had to go. They registered me as well. So far so good.
I went up to the first floor and into the research room. I was trying to find some historical information on some relatives (Births/deaths etc.., next of kin, their siblings). I have virtually no knowledge of my mothers side of the family and wanted to spend some time researching it. I hadn't a clue where to start or how to do it so thats why I went to PRONI. The woman at the counter on the first floor came out and did a brief search on their search engine. Her initial questioning and fact finding could have been more detailed and thorough. She could have been much more helpful. If the situation was in reverse I most definitely would have spent more time helping her, showing her how to use the system and gathering names of relatives etc... She left me on my own after briefly searching for me and I had to use a system that I had never used before. In short I got some info on what I was looking for, the records only went so far. I left and went to the canteen and had a bit of lunch which was nice.
Overall, there is room for improvement here. Namely the staff members should be more helpful. As said if this was in reversal I most definitely would have went out of my way to help. Anyway, to each their own.

I spend two days here recently, and wish it could have been more! Not just because I discovered my inner archive nerd, but really because of the quality of the staff and the building. Such a wonderful facility, with records in prime condition. I came to understand the care and management that this material needs. We as visitors play our part in returning the archives to the enthusiastic and caring staff in the same condition and order that it came out - all in order, book spines undamaged and so on.
Archives can seem strange and intimidating until you get used to them. 'What right do I have to be here?'. The archivists couldn't have been more helpful in guiding me through the process - thank you to them.
I shouldn't miss out the café - great coffee and scones to die for! The building sits in the stunning Titanic Quarter. Between that, and walks along the Lagan into the city, you get a strong sense of Belfast's tremendous industrial heritage, comparable to Glasgow and contrasting with the Georgian architectural beauty of Dublin. I look forward to see more of Ireland - all 32 counties, north and south!

I have now used all four of the major Records Offices in the UK -- The National Archives at Kew is by far the best for document retrieval and facilities, and the one for Scotland in Edinburgh undoubtedly the worst. Most of the material I examine is generally 'off piste' as I definitely do not research family history and my research often requires a large table. I photograph everything so a research table in a well lit area is definitely an advantage. Being a new building I expected PRONI to have all modern systems for document ordering and retrieval.
That is where the dream ended. No pre-document ordering via the Internet. Search for ordering worked quite well via a computer room with helpful staff. Search table was allocated via a computer and was nowhere near a window. Document retrieval was via a serving hatch - that would have been a real bottleneck if the archives had been full, although the staff in this section were quite friendly and helpful, unlike the search room staff, forever on the prowl for misdemeanours, who seem to have been blessed with a misery gene. This all totalled up to a very average experience - Fortunately I do not have to go there again.

I guess that nobody, but mostly the staff in the library, received the email about library etiquette. They must have searched high and low to find the noisiest staff with the loudest voices, babbling incessantly. Communicate and be helpful, for sure, but not like it's the Titanic's engine room. It's an utterly disruptive and unappealing place, as well as being far too restrictive about booking, under the pretense of Covid. I sense that the staff would prefer to be anywhere else, probably at home.

Staff is super helpful in getting you started on researching your family roots. Access to many databases, plus scans of many handwritten church records going back several hundred years.

I spend several hours trawling microfilm church records after being set up by staff. Would have liked to have had occasional referral from staff as to whether or not I was achieving results. Did find several pieces of valuable information confirming what Inhad already found from previous research.

I accompanied my friend whose roots are in Belfast. She came prepared to get copies of important family documents and was not disappointed. While she was well prepared, the staff at the Office made it so much nicer and easier for her. She stated she felt "comforted" by their attention to detail and their interest in her family.

Having pre-booked for my first visit I was issued with a pass and started my research. I was given considerable assistance with where to look and a selection of reference books which gave some excellent background for my family tree. This is a very large document repository and I only managed to scratch the surface despite working for 5 hours. Definitely the place for research into public records.

I am now the proud owner of a 10 year pass to PRONI - the hallowed sanctuary of Northern Ireland's Records. I knew that I have a great grandmother who hailed from the North, but other than she was born in Armagh about 1841, I knew little else about her. Following a visit to a professional genealogist at the Ulster Historical Society who whizzed in and out of sites faster than I could see and learned interconnections between members of my family quicker than I could say 'relative', I came away very grateful and with a list of references to pursue in the PRONI archives. So off I set over the River Lagan, on foot, back into the Titanic Quarter in search of a Will made by my great grand uncle in 1902. Within half an hour, I was holding the original document in my hand and left with a complete photocopy as well as photos. This led to making all sorts of links and connections with actual addresses all over Belfast. What a result from a morning's work on my first day in Ulster!!
