Friendly and helpful staff. You have to pay £5.50 each to get past the gift shop area and to look through the windows at the basin.
Hot drinks are limited to a machine and there are a few snacks/crisps available to buy. The centre is crying out for a cafe serving hot drinks and cakes with a great view!!
A nice selection of gifts in the shop including binoculars etc.
No walks available from the centre itself, but there is a leaflet you can pick up for information on walks and hides located around the reserve.
We decided to visit the Lurgies walk, which is a 5-10min drive from the centre. The car park really needs a sign from the road as we drove straight past it twice, once because we missed it, second because it looks like someone's driveway. Limited on time, so only walked for 15mins or so, nice and quiet with good views over the basin.
Definitely more for the keen birders!

Very interesting place, great views across the basin using the telescopes and binoculars on offer. We saw seals, herons and a variety of smaller birds during our visit. Lots of informative displays and books. Really knowledgeable volunteers on hand to help/chat. Worth visiting the bird hide for a different viewpoint.
Gift shop on site and a small selection of snacks and hot/cold drinks are available.
There's a bus stop outside for those going by public transport. Worth noting that the walks around the nature reserve don't start from the visitor centre, not sure how accessible they are by public transport, it's something I'll need to look into before my next visit!

Visit regularly, enjoy the birdwatching however have noticed one of the staff members talks very loudly to people. We find it a bit off putting and distracting, we left early last week because of this. It’s a nice place with lovely views and usually lots to look at but are less keen to visit the centre. A reasonably subdued tone would add to the ambiance.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review! We're sorry to hear you found the atmosphere of the centre less subdued than you would have liked. Our staff and volunteers are all very friendly but that's a shame the noise was off-putting on this occasion. Often the centre is super quiet, and the ambiance really changes on a daily basis depending on which staff, volunteers, visitors, and wildlife are about. Please do email montrosebasin@scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk if you'd like to tell us the day you were in and I can have a chat with the staff/vols that were working that day.

A bit too expensive, but we were lucky enough to see an osprey. The exhibition is very small, but there are some binoculars for observing the animals. So it's best to take a trip here when the visibility is good. Volunteers are very experienced.

The young woman on duty on 3rd August was so friendly helpful and KNOWLEDGEABLE. We had such a great experience. We saw seals, eiders and male sparrow hawk. Lovely environment. Good shop. Great coffee

I’m so glad we visited here before starting out on the walks of the basin. The staff were extremely knowledgable and welcoming and it’s a delightful educational centre with a lovely shop and refreshments. The viewing window is amazing with state of the art binoculars and telescopes to view the abundant wildlife. We couldn’t resist buying our own one from the shop and Alison was happy to advise and allow us to try them out before spending time advising us where best to spot kingfishers and ospreys. Special thanks to Alison for chasing after us after we’d headed back to the car to let us know an osprey arrived -as if on cue - one dived for a fish right in front of us - an unforgettable experience! Thankyou!

So i am not a twitcher at all , but do enjoy wildlife and nature , plus my wife is a member so visited here whilst in the area.
Staff and volunteers are very friendly and informative with lots of knowledge re the wildlife and the area. time fairly flew in whilst using the binoculars and telescopes to view the birds , so handily there is tea/coffee and tasty food available too !
worth a visit even if not a birder !

This is a great place to see the wildlife. The staff are super friendly, and really knowledgeable about the local area, and the wildlife. The viewing equipment was all easy to use, and we were able to see loads of birds, as well as some seals. Lots of information available on the boards dotted around. Also, the ice cream the sell is delicious

Called in today as we wanted more information about the Geese we'd seen flying over, very helpful receptionist that showed us the viewing gallery that covered all of the Montrose basin, viewing lenses and binoculars were available so you could look at the various birds, seals and wild life as well as complete information about the history and inhabitants of the basin, we were lucky enough to spot some seals, Lapwings, Geese, and Herons.
There's a small gift shop, toilets and access for wheelchairs.

Montrose Basin is 10 miles to drive around, not all the roads have footpaths. There are 4 designated walks that are part of the Angus Council "core paths" network on the Local Nature Reserve on which you are able to walk dogs so long as you follow the outdoor access code and keep your dogs under control.
If you require a map or further information you are welcome to drop in and ask us at the Visitor Centre during opening hours.

Gday!! Im travelling to Montrose on 14 to 16th May and just reading about your centre. Sounds wonderful and wondering what time you open please and how far from town centre is it please? Is it walking distance or need car/taxi bus etc.

Hello!
We're glad to hear that you're looking forward to visiting us later this year. We are open daily, 10:30am - 5pm. It's around a half hour walk from the town centre, but if you're wanting to take advantage of the walks around the Basin, a car is ideal as there aren't any walks from the visitor centre. There's plenty to see at the visitor centre though, especially with our scopes and binoculars! And we have a hide just at the bottom of the car park.
In May we should be seeing lots of sand martins and a large variety of waders and ducks. If you're lucky, an osprey might even be spotted fishing.
