We spent a good while at Dunstaffnage Castle, as Donald Campbell, and employee of Historic Scotland, was informative, friendly and interesting. Highly recommended. Thanks to Donald.

We found ourselves at the mercy of wet weather with our Mull/Iona tour cancelled and decided to explore Oban a bit more . At the last minute we decided to check out the castle. It was a 10 min easy drive from city center. We reached 1/2 hr before closing (4.30om) on website but last tickets are dispensed at 4.00. We made it and it was a great experience. We were able to explore the castle and grounds easily and there’s so much history . Stunning views from the top( obviously). Overall, perfect for a quick dip into history that is close to city and you can do in 30-40 mins.

This was another wonderful castle that took us by surprise! The staff were all very enthusiastic about our visit, and took the time to ask us afterwards how we enjoyed our time there. It's part of the Historic Environment so we were able to use our Explorer Pass. It's a partially ruined castle at the south-west of the entrance to Loch Etive. Make the time to walk to the chapel as well. Really hauntingly beautiful.

Very beautiful and historic place, we went because there was an easter egg hunt that kept my younger cousins entertained. Friendly staff and scenic views.

I spent a very pleasant time here. The initial stairs are rough and a little uneven, but once inside, the ruins become very interesting. There are good signboards and some QR codes to videos. The tour is well laid out. Climb out to the wall walk - it's very worth the effort for the views both down into the castle and out over the countryside. Comparing to scrapbook pictures inside, you can see how the original defensive view of the loch worked - it's now blocked by mature trees that are just babies in the photos. The chapel is a very short, pleasant walk through the woods. It's really ruined, but the signboards made it come alive for me. I never did figure out why the costumed guy was standing out front, just looking impressive but not doing anything.
Note: don't trust your GPS once you're off the main road - just keep going on the road the signs started you down, don't turn off it at all as it ends IN the car park for the castle.

Probably not one a lot of people would go visit, but it should be on the itinerary if visiting Scotlands West Coast. Beautiful setting on the harbour, forest behind it and the castle itself is so well maintained. Very peacful place, you could spend hours there, walking the woods and taking in the castle. Staff were lovely and there's a really nice gift shop.

Had a very nice afternoon here, and can definitely recommend it.

The castle and Chapel are a short (less than 5 minute) walk from the car park. We felt the paths and ground were very well maintained, as we walked towards the castle and shop. The member of staff who we spoke to in the shop was very friendly and helpful

The castle itself is quite impressive to look at from the outside. You have to go up some quite uneven stairs to get into the castle, but there is a handrail for support. Inside the castle, I was surprised by the amount of entertainment available (targeted at young kids, but we're big kids ourselves). We spent ages playing snakes and ladders, connect 4 and Jenga, which were scattered throughout the different rooms Inside the castle. The information boards were quite informative, and there were also QR codes on some of the notice boards, which took us to videos. Some of these videos were about the castle itself, and one was a lesson in some gaelic words. I thought this was clever, creative, and a good use of multi media tools to educate visitors. The views from around the castle are stunning. It's definitely worth taking the narrow and uneven steps to get up to the top to have a look.

After our walk around the castle, I needed to use the loo. I realise that's maybe not an important detail, but I feel the toilets needed a mention in this review. When I came round the corner, and saw that I'd be using a portaloo, I groaned. However, this was the most pleasant portaloo I've ever had the pleasure of using. It was actually very clean, and was even sufficiently spacious to allow disabled access, and baby changing facilities.

We were very pleased with our visit. Definitely worthwhile if you like your history, and of course, gorgeous coastal views.

A really nice spot to visit. Situated not far from the main road and easy to find. Plenty parking and the castle itself may be a ruin, but it was still worthy of a visit. The exterior wall is intact but the interior is no more than ruins with a towered roofed section which you go up through to get onto the walk which takes you around the wall of the castle. Still ....... a really historical place that definitely worthy of a visit if you're in the area.
Also, there are ruins if a Chapel in the woods here also.

Dating from 1220 this is a very early Scottish castle. Quite interesting with display boards dotted around to give a bit of the history. Doesn’t warrant more than an hour to look around. Small gift shop with snacks and cold drinks. Not accessible to mobility impaired as steep flight of steps up into the castle.

Looked a bit dull on the website, but the castle is imposing, the inside interesting, the walk to the chapel atmospheric and the walk to the point is well worth a visit.
