Great guided tour with a small group. Jamie was really informative and knowledgeable. Vikki very helpful and made good coffee at the end of the tour. Rounded off with some excellent piping from Jamie.

The walk to the castle from Oban was enjoyable. The grounds to the castle were good. However we could not get to the castle as everything seem to be closed. Enjoyed the walk from town and back and at least get some exercise on a nice day.

Unfortunately we missed the castle opening by two days as it closes from the end of September until April so we did not get a chance to walk around the grounds and visit the castle itself. But you can park by the side of the road and get some good photos of the castle, but not close up. Definitely make sure next time we visit it at the right time.

Not much remained of the castle but its still worth the visit. The house has a few rooms with artefacts - interesting. The cafe only serves tea/coffee. No food.

Hi AVFA, Thanks you for reviewing your time with us. It great to hear you found our Castle Ruins worth visiting and some of the artefacts in the 1745 House Museum interesting! It is true the Kettle Garden Cafe does not serve any meals at the moment. We do have a selection of hot and cold drinks as well as some snacks and baked goods. Best Wishes, Florence

What an interesting place to visit with so much history. The 1745 house was packed with artefacts and information about the MacDougall family and clan. The Women of Donollie 1820-2020 Exhibition was absolutely fascinating and being able to see the stunning dresses at close quarters was a real treat.
The castle ruins are up a short but steep path, the clue being the rack of wooden walking poles available at the start of the path ! There is a beautiful wooden bench part way up and the panoramic views from the ruins are well worth the effort.
There is a lovely willow garden to walk through with ponds and plenty of shaded seating around the house particularly around a magnificent tree with its own carved woodpecker.
There are clean spacious toilets and a disabled access toilet within the house, although the house has no disabled access to the upper floor.
The cafe facilities were closed presumably due to Covid restrictions.
We highly recommend this as a place to spend a couple of hours.

Dear bethh5, Thank you for taking the time to review your time in Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds and for recommending us. We are delighted to hear how much you enjoyed your visit. As you have rightly noticed, the Kettle Cafe is currently closed due to Covid-19 Restrictions, but, we are pleased to say it will reopen in August 2021. Note: written at a time Covid limited our experience. Lovely views and some interesting items in the museum however don't expect to spend too long there. Not a big castle. Feels like its still being finished to make it a full visitor experience. The day we went we pre-booked a specific time to arrive, we were even encouraged to arrive early. At the required time the car park was closed with other confused guests and no sign of our guide. The gardens and grounds have some lovely sculptures I just hope they finish it as it suggests a little more can be done and care taken. The café was closed on our visit.

Dear McRuneforge, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience in Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds. We are very pleased to hear you enjoyed the views from our Castle Ruins and found the 1745 House Museum interesting. Dunollie Castle’s size is similar to that of other medieval castles in Scotland. Our 12th century Castle Ruins have undergone some renovations which only just finished in 2020. It is now possible for visitors to step into the main enclosure and find the traces of previous buildings, walk into the main storage area on the ground floor to see the famous basket weaving effect on the walls typical of Irish style constructions and even go up the castle stairs into the kitchen. Those who are not scared of heights can also climb up an extra floor, all the while enjoying the views. Most of our visitors spend 1-2 hours onsite or more if they have a special interest in part of our collection, their children play in our Woodland Grounds for longer or the weather is nice. That is the amount of time we would recommend as it enables people to take part in a tour or wander around our Grounds, explore the Castle ruins, take in the views across Oban bay and the isles beyond and visit the 1745 House Museum with the temporary 'Women of Dunollie' textile exhibition without having to rush. It is a shame you had to wait by the gate before your visit. We do encourage people to come 10 minutes before the scheduled start of their activity as this gives them the time to park and get ready in time. However, we currently have only 6 members of staff (some of them part-time) to run the whole site as opposed to over 30 on a normal, pre-covid summer. We cannot man the gate at all times. Hence why the gate may be closed if you arrive earlier than 10 minutes before the time you have booked for. We are currently working hard to reopen more fully whilst remaining a safe and comfortable space for both our visitors and staff. The Kettle Café was sadly closed at the time of your visit but it will be reopening in August. It is great that you too see our site’s great potential for development. We are set on improving and preserving the site in the coming years, that is one of our main charitable goals. We had huge plans for 2020 but our funding was cut due to the pandemic. As the MacDougall of Dunollie Preservation Trust is a charity, all our proceeds go back into maintaining and preserving Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds. Other than buying tickets, as you have already done prior to your visit, another way you could help us ‘finish it’ is by sending us a donation of your choice. This can be done through the ‘support us’ section on our website: https://www.dunollie.org/fundraising-opportunities Best Wishes, Florence Communications Coordinator at Dunollie Museum, Castle and Grounds
