Run by a charity they depend on visitors and the enthusiasm by the volunteers makes the visit interesting and the Spitfire was the jewel. War exhibits so interesting and well worth the visit

Superb museum with a very special exhibit
I first realised this museum existed wascwhen I was visuting the area for the first time, I spotted a brown sign with a propeller on it, S udxa bit of a Google search for more information, was happy to discover the aircraft they had and decided to visit.
I was visiting the area and was keen to visit.
The weather was swful on the da y I visited, however the weather broke for the whole of the time I was visiting, so I was able to view the amazing outside exhibits.
The star exhibit is the loch doon spitfire which has an amazing story. We were treated to a talk by one of the team that rescued the spitfire, one of only 2 left of this mark, and a veteran of the battle of Britain

This museum was one of the best I have ever visited, in that it was so personal, accessible and memorable. The Spitfire exhibit and story was completely fascinating, and the staff made me feel really welcome and involved. Just Excellent!!

Visited with my family including a teenager and ten year old at the end of August 2022. Staff were friendly and welcoming especially helping with what tickets we should get for entry. It's a nice open museum you can leisurely walk around. It was good to be able to get up close to the planes, engines and such like. Lots of history to learn about for all ages and the the talk about the spitfire was especially interesting. It was fascinating to see some of the things I remember my grandparents having when looking through the "everyday life" buildings (some of which was still under construction). Only slight downside was part of the musuem tower was closed off due to construction / repairs but they were necessary on the grade II building so we can't fault that. Overall good day out and very educational for all ages.

Great place to visit,lots of interesting things to see and the Loch Doon Spitfire is a wonderful thing to see,gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and airfix models etc. Small cafe selling sandwiches and drinks. A very nice place to visit,recommended and all run by volunteers.

I last visited Dumfries Aviation Museum five years ago, so decided to visit the museum again as I was in the area. My visit was even better than last time.
Firstly, the Loch Doon Spitfire, only one of two Mark 1 Spitfires in existence, has its own hangar and I attended a talk by a volunteer who was part of the diving team that discovered the fuselage by accident and helped to rescue and restore the plane. Also I found out more about the Czech pilot who was killed when the Spitfire crashed, the plane's role in the Battle Of Britain, and how the plane was restored. Very interesting and the volunteer gave a question and answer session at the end.
Also a new feature is called The Home Front, where a wartime house and shop have been recreated and there are genuine food tins, wartime radios, ration books and gas masks, as well as recordings of Vera Lynn and Neville Chamberlain. A minute or two away is an Anderson shelter and a DIg For Victory garden.
Like the last time I visited, there is a very good selection of British, American and French warplanes, the fuselage of a BAC Trident and an exhibition concerning the history of RAF Dumfries. Another bonus, the section regarding airborne forces has been expanded, with a history of the Parachute Regiment and part of a World War Two glider.
Entry is very reasonable at £7, there is a cheap and fairly well stocked cafe and a model shop at the museum. Note, the museum is 3 miles outside of Dumfries and you need a car to get there.

Brilliant fun, great afternoon spent looking at the large selection of planes and curiosities. The star was the spitfire which has its own hanger, amazing getting that close to such a famous plane.

My wife and I loved everything about this museum. It is run by enthusiastic volunteers and they've obviously devoted thousands of man-hours to get it to its present state. Incredible value for £7, or £5 for concessions. Only proviso is that it isn't open every day, so check before you go. There is so much to see that you could spend several hours here.

This is a canny little museum however it would have been nice to have at least one plane that the kids could actually sit in. My 5 year old was asking me all the way round if he could sit in one and unfortunately he couldn’t.
There wasn’t much information on each plane or on any the exhibits.
Its ok, canny to walk round but certainly wouldn’t travel too far to go there. There is plenty of picnic tables as there is no cafe there.

Hi,
We are very happy to have dogs on site.
We only ask that dogs remain on a lead, that you clean up after them if there is any mess and that you take care around our other visitors who may be less comfortable around dogs.

The exhibits on site are held in a number of buildings. Our new buildings are all at ground level with ramped access (RAF Dumfries, Loch Doon Spitfire and Home Front exhibits) with our older exhibits in our Tower which is split across 3 levels with no wheelchair access to the top 2 floors (Ground = Engine display, 1st floor is armoury and miscellaneous artefacts and 2nd floor is mainly a flying control replica).
Access around the site is currently a mixture of tar paths, tar planings and grass.
There is currently no separate disabled toilet.
Our winter site development work will be extending the tarred areas to avoid the need to be on tar planings, and establishing a disabled toilet for next season, but this work is not currently complete.
