Bizarrely in my 64 years this was my first time visiting Dundee. And I have to say it was full of surprises. Particularly the McManus.
A young American girl working in our hotel suggested that this was the place to see. She wasn't wrong. This is a smashing museum and art gallery. We spent almost four hours here (and it could have been more if we'd had the time).
We were welcomed by a friendly member of staff who pointed out the different rooms to visit. After watching a short, informative video about the building we began our adventure.
The first gallery we visited was all about the city and it was terrific. From the classroom to the battlefield. A really nice collection of exhibits and well put together. I particularly enjoyed seeing the Michael Marra exhibit and the one about the music the city has given the world. I loved the First World War war painting After Neuve Chapelle by Joseph Gray. Wow.
The Albert Hall was next. A beautiful room that housed a collection of artefacts brought to the city from all over the world. I know there is a train of thought that thinks museums shouldn't have items that form history and legacies of other cultures, but without these how would be informed about the world outside our own. And who's to say that these items would have survived till today if they weren't in museums all over the world? Fascinating insight into the past.
A short walk through to "A Weather Eye", a collection of art depicting Scotland's changing climate and the how we, as Scots, use language to describe our changing weather. Some beautiful work in here.
"Impressed" was the suitably named collection of contemporary fine art prints by several Scottish artists on display in what I think was the DC Thomson room. Impressed? Yes I was.
Visually the Victoria Room is probably the most spectacular. This is how a gallery should look. It wows you from it's first impression and then continues to wow with it's contents. A fabulous room.
Downstairs and a fleeting visit to a variety of rooms. There was so much more to see and explore but it will all have to wait until I visit again... which I am sure will be soon. But for now the cafeteria was calling and there was a roll and sausage with my name on it.
The cafe and the shop were as you would expect, except for no rolls left in the cafe so it had to be a piece and sausage.
All in all a fine attraction and well worth a visit.

Visited here on the off chance , as the museum we were going to visit was closed. We had got so cold whilst walking around the town that we decided to pop in here to warm up. we were so glad that we did. There was only 2hrs left of opening but the staff warmly welcomed us, and picked out the best things to see first in case we ran out of time. The museum is set in a beautiful building and downstairs is divided into two main galleries . These told the history of Dundee and its industries with both objects and paintings. Loved the skylight that gets you to look at the statues of the roof of the building. Upstairs are two more galleries which have various temporary displays.
Was a fascinating building to visit not only for its artifacts but for its design .

The McManus Museum in Dundee houses several museums under one roof. On the one hand, the McManus Museum is an art gallery and presents numerous paintings about seafaring. The visitor sees ships on the high, sometimes stormy seas in the paintings. In addition, the house houses a Natural History Museum, which presents the flora and fauna in Scotland; also around the world. So the interested visitor gets to see a whole range of stuffed animals, from small insects to birds and big game. Of course, fossils, gemstones and shells can also be admired. It also houses a historical museum dedicated to catching whales in Scotland and other countries. Various harpoons are also shown. In addition to numerous small and large ship models, this museum also deals with shipbuilding in Dundee. Various films are also shown. Everything is also labeled and explained accordingly. The staff was very nice and friendly as well as helpful. No admission fee was charged on my day of visit. Admission was free for everyone. A museum-cafe directly in the house takes care of the physical well-being. There is also very nice seating there. The museum is located right in the city centre of Dundee and is on the to-do list for a stay in Dundee. An absolute must in Dundee and must not be missed. Very nice work!

The McManus is Dundee's jewel.

The center of Dundee is fairly compact and can be walked from one end to the other in relatively few minutes. This museum is easily reached on foot from just about anywhere in town, perhaps a block or two from the very center.

As the photos suggest, the McManus is housed in an attractive Victorian structure that is an attraction in and of itself. Before or after your visit, you might want to walk around it. The grand stairway at the southwest end is particularly impressive and photogenic.

While the McManus is primarily a local museum, it is helped immensely by (a) Dundee's own interesting and varied history and (b) some excellent work by the museum's designers and curators. Everything is logically laid out, well-displayed, and aided by well-written materials.

The admission fee is a bargain: free.

There are two floors with exhibits. On the first floor the primary gallery is one involving Dundee's history. It has a lot of classic old cases with updated contents. The room is like the city's attic, with displays ranging from the skeleton of a humpback whale that made its way up the river to the contents of an old grocery to video games (designed in Dundee) to Levi's Jeans (once made in Dundee) to anti-Covid gear. On the point of video games, Dundee boasts the creation of the Grant Theft Auto series and Lemmings, among others, and its university was the first to have a degree in video game design.

Upstairs there are more galleries, including art galleries with works from several continents and from roughly the 1800s up to the present. If you are an art fan, you can find prints by Chagall and Picasso and oils by John Singer Sargent (of a prominent Dundee citizen), Williams McTaggart (several - some of his works are iconic), Dante Gabriel Rossetti (of Dante, considered one of his best works), and John Everett Millais (a humorous painting entitled, tongue-in-cheek, "Puss in Boots"). Most but not all of the paintings are in a large red gallery. In the same gallery look for the striking Riders of the Sidhe by John Duncan, a striking painting with Celtic themes.

Ordinarily, we would rate a mostly local museum, even an excellent one, a "4" due to potentially limited interest. In this instance, however, they've done a particularly good job of organizing and displaying the best of a city with a varied history. If you are in Dundee you should definitely come here.

I was born and raised in Dundee and never visited this museum. Then after visiting family many times decided to take my family there.

It’s always been an iconic building in Dundee. But wow! It’s a stunning iconic building in a great position.

It’s gets a lot better from there.

Staff great and friendly, wanted to help and realised as we had a a young child that the family room would be important.

The exhibits are amazing! Absolutely amazing a lot of variety some culture about Dundee, history and some amazing artwork.

The family room beautiful and clean and lots of things for kids to do. Well done.

And then again to the building what an amazing scene for some sensational exhibits.

My only regret we didn’t have more time.

The unbelievable thing… it’s free!!!

Well done McManus I’m coming back.
