Interesting shopping day in Edinburgh today. Someone here recommended Kathy’s Knits a few weeks ago so I walked there this morning in the rain (I didn’t really mind that, but still). I found Kathy to be prickly and anything but welcoming 😞. If I hadn’t adored the yarns I wouldn’t have stayed. She even said, when I was looking at a pattern, “oh you won’t be able to do that. Here’s a beginners pattern”. Ffs! 54 years knitting experience under my belt but she decided from just looking at me 🙄.
Here’s the kicker....I spent £78 ($140 approx) on just 5 balls of (fabulous) yarn and patterns but she wouldn’t let me use her toilet as it’s “only for those attending classes”.
So...go for the yarn but don’t go for the service.
PS I found a yarn she was selling for £15 a ball for £9.90 in John Lewis. Just saying 😜

I thought I'd died and gone to knitting heaven. Not a single acrylic import to be seen. Kathy's Knits select fabulous yarns from British (predominantly Scottish) mills and cottage industries. Many are hand spun and hand dyed so expect to pay accordingly. Many pure wools and lots of help and advice when choosing.
I found the store by accident as it just happened to be round the corner from our hotel and has a very convenient pub directly opposite where the other half can wait in comfort with a good Scottish pint and friendly banter.
I just couldn't resist a beautiful hand spun yarn by Abercairn Yarns - a blend of baby alpaca, silk and cashmere. Unbelievably soft and a amazing colours.
If you want to take a real piece of Scotland home with you this is a must on your places to visit in Edinburgh if you knit or crochet.

Did visit this shop at our last day in Scotland. Great selection of yarns from the UK!! Kathy is very friendly and helped me choosing some skeins / colors and told me where the yarn is spun, dyed, etc. :)

Went in on our way back from the Bothanical gardens. If you are looking for Scottish yarn (and British yarn in general) this is the place to go. Very helpful and nice shopkeeper. She let me take my time browsing the selection by myself and then helped me choose a yarn that i'm very happy with. :)

After reading reviews where people extolled how great this store was in helping you find the perfect project, I walked well out of my way to find the shop during our 4-day visit to the city. What a waste of time. The young woman in the store was clearly so focused on her current project that asking her for help seemed a major inconvenience for her. Pieces I was interested in knitting she dismissed as being too difficult for me. Her advice when I first walked in, looking for a project that would remind me of Scotland and my trip was: pick out the wool you want. No guidance. No direction as to anything about the choices. Well, that’s why I am asking you for help. I got none. My local store in the States would have bent over backwards to help someone who came in looking for yarn and pattern, especially if they had said they were from out of town. This young woman, instead, seemed very happy when I left empty-handed so she could return to her knitting. I went to another store instead and received lovely service.

Small shop with a nice selection of Scottish and British yarns. Just what I was looking for while I was traveling through Scotland and Ireland

I recently visited Kathy's and found it to be an excellent shop. First of all the shop owner was lovely and welcoming. She has chosen a wonderful selection of wool, you will not leave empty handed. She has also carefully chosen a fabulous selection of reference materials. On display were the loveliest samples, intricate cables that were awe inspiring. There were visitors from all over the world visiting her shop that day, it was great to see!

This is a small knit shop in “new” town. We visited it on the way back from the Royal Britannia. The owner wasn’t there that day but a very nice lady helped us. I purchased some Jamieson and Smith yarn that i hadn’t seen in the states. They also had several shawls knit up from Lucy Hague. She apparently works at the shop but was not there that day. I bought her book and hope to make one of her shawls as my keepsake

I arrived in Edinburgh on a Saturday afternoon, and headed for Kathy's shop, which was one-quarter-mile from my hotel. However, I took a wrong turn, and it took me 2 1/2 hours to find it. I had been in contact with Cathy before my trip, so when I finally arrived, she greeted me by name. I made the most of the small amount of time I had, and gathered several varieties for my daughter. It was all very well received. A few months later, a new trip was in the works, and Cathy graciously allowed my daughter and her friends to send requests for items to place in 'my stash', knowing the date that I would arrive to claim it all. It was all packaged and ready for me, with some choices for me since my daughter had been rather vague on some of her request ('just select something pretty'). Again, all of the recipients were thrilled with their items, and are likely already planning their requests for my next trip, in April, 2019. I'm packing lots of compression bags, just in case, and my daughter will be along for the ride. Lovely shop, lovely owner - very fun time.
