Dunfermline palace ruins were amazing along with the back story of Robert the Bruce and St Margaret along with many others. Robert is buried within the main Dunfermline abbey.
This is free to visit, it’s an amazing place although some small areas which could be a little claustrophobic for some to descend into the ruins of the palace, also unsuitable for wheelchairs or those with mobility problems.
There is a gorgeous coffee shop just outside the abbey with a beautiful garden and gorgeous views.

Beautiful abbey in the interior of Scotland whose visit we really liked. The guided tour for an employee of the Abbey made all the difference for us to understand its historical importance.

I enjoyed my visit to both the Abbey and Palace ruins. It is odd that the burial place of one of one of Scotland's most famous figures is not better known.

The ruins are very interesting but the information boards are a bit dated.

The entrance and exit are also a bit challenging.

I thought it a bit odd how little information was exhibited about Bruce in particular, and Scottish Kings generally. Again, what was there was a bit dated. A short film of some kind covering this would a good addition.

Also, surely there should be a large Saltire at the entrance to the site? Or at the top of the Abbey tower?

That said, both the Abbey and the Palace ruins are worth visiting.

You enter the palace through a door behind the cashier, cross a small walkway and descend a very tight dark spiral staircase. You are warned about the staircase, and they suggest you look first to evaluate your capabilities. It is difficult to assess where the next step is on the way down as the lighting is dim and the stairs are uneven. Much easier going up because you can see the stair in front of you. We only went in because it was free with our Historic Scotland Membership. You can see the whole ruin from the road way above without paying an entrance fee. There are 3 signs inside which provide information that can be found on the internet. You also get access to a small exhibition of some ancient carved stones (window frames and door frames, statutes etc).

We visited on a beautiful day, and the staff were exceptionally helpful, offering advice and willingly chatting and answering our questions. They were all easygoing and informative, making our experience even more enjoyable.

During our visit, we also stumbled upon some charming stalls selling a variety of items outside the cathedral. This delightful discovery rounded off our lovely visit perfectly, adding a unique and memorable touch to our day. The combination of the helpful staff, informative conversations, and the vibrant stalls made for an enriching and pleasant experience.

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace is excellent place to visit and is free, but you have to pre book on the Historic Scotland!
We explored and took a lovely walk around the Abbey and Palace and took loads of photos and learnt loads. Movies had been filmed there and it has a lot of amazing history. The incredible cathedral had gorgeous stained glass windows that are so beautiful, it's a must visit for everyone visiting Scotland.
Dunfermline was once the historic former capital of Scotland and the tomb of King Robert of Scotland is here. The Abbey and church are fascinating and well worth a visit, make sure you also go into the Church at the back in the Abbey, you have to see it to take in the magnificent place. There was a lovely man in the Church playing the organ which was incredible and so beautiful making the experience very atmospheric. Thankyou!! There was a lovely man in the ticket office who was very helpful and another friendly, helpful man in the Church who told us the history of the Abbey and Church, he told us about the accidental finding of Robert the Bruce and also he recommended a wee visit to Andrew Carnegie's childhood home and told us his story, very knowledgeable, Thankyou!!

Beautiful historic abbey and palace in the heart of the city. Entrance is free. Lots of amazing history linked to the site. Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Well worth a visit.
Access to the palace is down a narrow staircase.

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace is an architectural heaven and she’s 1,000 years old. Founded in 1128 by King David I, The site has served various roles throughout the centuries, from a place of worship and royal residence to a burial ground. The Abbey itself is an architectural marvel, featuring intricate Medieval, Romanesque and Gothic designs. The Abbey Church, which is a current place of worship, is home to the tomb of Robert the Bruce, one of Scotland’s most celebrated kings. Robert the Bruce successfully led Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence against England. He restored Scotland to an independent kingdom and is regarded in Scotland as a national hero. Wonderful visit.

The architecture was stunning, especially the west door. However, entrance was officious. We were not allowed to enter a church until we had to go and collect a 'free' ticket from the ruined palace. Historic Scotland places seem to be overpopulated with staff that presumably the taxpayer is paying for.

Dunfermline Abbey and Palace are free to visit, although donations are welcome. All of our staff look after this ancient monument and contribute to our welcome and visitor experience. If you would like to find out more about Historic Environment Scotland's income and expenditure, you can look on our website. Thanks for leaving a review.

Such a wonderful and beautiful place to visit. We found this whilst visiting the area of Dunfermline for a family event and it was just stunning. Lots of history to learn about and the kids loved it too.
