A very impressive display of all main religions found throughout the world enables visitors to gain insight as to what they are and reflect upon their practices. Because of this, it could also be a place where a lot of time is spent.

This museum is about the basics of religions throughout the world. The information boards and display cabinets provide a simple synopsis and you see the similarities and differences between various faiths. In an enlightening way, it took me back to my RS lessons in junior school.

The first floor holds a delightful collection of religious images and artifacts from ancient to contemporary, generally well-described in the informational labels . Many exhibits are grouped thematically across several religious traditions. Personal quotes from practitioners (and apostates) add a real human interest. Christian images prevail, understandably, but Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism and, to a lesser extent, Sikhism, Taoism, and Animism are fairly represented.

The second floor holds art of more local interest to Glasgow. The cafe was not open (which seems to be a common situation.) A few burned-out bulbs in display cases were my only complaints.

This was our first stop in a tour including Glasgow Cathedral and Provand's Lordship, all within a short walk of each other. All (together or singly) are highly recommended.

The building has a plaque which shows it was built fairly recently, so the style is neo-baronial. This is worth checking out itself if you're into this kind of thing.

The ground floor is the cafe, which was closed, even after Easter. Walking up stairs to the first floor, there was a nice Ganesh statue to welcome you in, and a list of sponsors. This first room is exceptionally well lit, and has used modern techniques. Then it was time to slow down and see a North American tribal blanket. The explanations are in English for adults, not for five and six year olds which was a good sign. There was some stained glass which obviously had a lot of work originally and appreciated seeing it saved, not that old, about a century, and was displayed with daylight coming through. There was a little room off the main gallery with another Hindu statue taking prime position, and learnt something about the three characters low down. Again the lighting here was top notch. A third gallery has religion explanations for the main world ones, but unfortunately the cases were quite low grade, and couldn't read everything because the lighting was poor, with the brightest thing in the case the light bulb shining on the top grid. One I did read was on Sikhism, and everything made sense, like it had been checked and approved.

There were internal gallery stairs to the second floor. You can look down onto the first floor gallery and appreciate the space, and from there it was all a huge disappointment. The second floor gallery was closed, and someone had put a bucket on the floor. It was to be about angels, but looked like a primary school level of exploration. The third floor gallery has very similar content to the first floor display cases, but with more space for groups. The lighting was worse than my kitchen with visible bright spotlights.

Would I go again? Yes, if the cafe was open and was in the general area; across the road is the Strathclyde University campus.

Fantastic museum with lots of impressive artefacts from the world's major religions, as well as Ancient Greece and Egypt. I appreciated the quotes and anecdotes interspersed throughout the exhibits, which offer personal insights into individual experiences of religion. Overall, an excellent museum which I would recommend to anyone regardless of their own religious beliefs.

A lovely little museum with some interesting activities for the children. Not masses to it but the pieces they do have are interesting and are well laid out.

This museum is beyond wonderful. I found the experience so moving, as the exhibitions are beautifully curated and so well done. I can't wait to go back, and as I'm local, that won't be long.

A good collection of artefacts

Some of the signs and descriptions are a bit dated and could do with a rework

Well worth a visit as it has some quality artefacts

Don't skip this fantastic small museum when you visit the cathedral and necropolis! It offers information and objects about several religions, not just informative but also well displayed beautiful objects, for example stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones. Unfortunately the section on angels was closed, which seemed quite unnecessary because there was no maintenance visible. The Zen garden outside is a little bit disappointing and the café was closed; still. entry is free and the museum offers food for thought.

I was a little unsure if to visit as I feared it would favour one religion over another but it definitely did not. One of the best things about this museum was how inclusive it was! There were so many gorgeous pieces of art for different religions and the sensitivity was perfectly balanced. The staff were so friendly and happy! It really made you happy to be here. Give the cathedral and necropolis a miss and check out St. Mungo's!

To bm230199, thank you for taking the time to leave us a wonderful 5-star review. We're glad to hear you found the museum inclusive. We attempt our best to promote understanding and respect between people of different faiths and those of none as best we can, and while we realise we sadly cannot have every faith on display, we are glad you found we have tried to find a balanced approach as best we can. We hope you can visit us again in the future!
