Lovely views and gardens! Didn't have time to go inside castle, but this was a must stop off for me. Did the grounds & gardens and it was lovely! So much more than what I expected, it's so well cared for and the animals! Wonderful info and a short walk takes you to see the animals there! So glad we stopped off here!

Beautiful location etc and the staff were lovely but for the money felt ripped off as we only were able to access a few areas of the castle. This would be better communicated at the ticket office, blaming covid and lack of guides is a weak excuse.

Dear andrewbY9090SP,
Many thanks for your comments, and I am sorry if you were disappointed with the number of rooms available to see, but this is clearly stated on our website. I do appreciate however that not everyone looks at the website before visiting. There are six rooms open with guides to tell the stories so visitors can set their own pace through the Castle.
Lack of staff is a real problem for not only our area but Scotland as a whole with many companies struggling to open as much as they would like.
I really appreciate your kind words regarding our staff and location.
Best wishes
Shirley

We were doing the North Coast 500 and hadn't planned a visit here but as we were passing......
What a great place. The stand out for us was the lovely welcome, from the young lad on the parking, the guy on the entrance to the guides starting from the kilted gentleman who knew all about the Isle of Man (our home), to the other lovely ladies giving insights into all the rooms. This is not your usual tour ,it was one to one. The home was used annually by the Queen Mother and other Royals and it is kept that way. Not at all pretentious and it had the feeling of a family home. The guys and gals working there are all fabulous and you could stay for hours listening to anecdotes. Well done. One of our favourite memories of the Highlands. Steve and Vicky.

It's like we're going to the Queen Mother's. This magnificent castle on the North Sea was the home of Queen Mother Elizabeth after the death of her husband King George VI.
The castle dates from the 16th century. It preserves all the decorative and practical objects that the Queen Mother used during her stays at the castle. Today museum! Beautiful garden and vegetable garden.

Excellent value, we spent half a day here. Ate in the cafe, portions were very generous, I think first time ever we could not finish the cake.
Castle was great a good number of rooms to see and guides very informative with so much to see. When we went through the kitchen there was a chef cooking for an event and even he took the time to talk to us and show us the inside of the 1950s fridge
Outside the gardens were beautiful and the animal area had lots of information, view out to see was great but too windy to watch for long
Shop had a nice range of items from cheap gifts to special one offs like the limited edition print of a picture painted by the King

Thoughtly enjoyed our recent visit here. On arrival we had lunch at the cafe and were served absolutely huge baked potatoes yum ! We then proceeded to the gorgeous gardens where we saw and smelt so many beautiful flowers and plants. On entering the castle we were greeted by a very friendly guide, whose family’s went back 3 generations who had all worked at the castle …she even told us about her childhood there …and same again later on in the tour another guide who was a local and been brought up around but castle / lovely personal touch and both ladies seemed to love the royals. Castle itself was interesting but only the downstairs open to public. We then finished st the petting zoo which my teenager loved and again staff there very friendly and animals looked well cared for. Lovely way to spend an afternoon!

Dear mountain445,
I am sorry you have been disappointed by your visit with us, but let me address your points, if I may.
There are 7 rooms open to the public and are all in the style of the 50's as that is when Her Majesty The Queen Mother both bought and renovated it. In 1996 Her Majesty made the Castle a charitable Trust - The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, for the good of the community, education and farming. It continues to be a Scottish charity today and is not owned by the Royal Family.
Every year as part of the charitable Trust, we have thousands of visitors and allow school children to visit for free to allow them to enjoy the gardens, animal centre and Castle and all it has to offer.
Best wishes

We did not go in the castle because of the dogs, but the majority of the garden is in the walled garden and this is oddly inaccessible with dogs.
There is an area of woods and garden where the dogs can go and so we swapped over to see the walled garden. The walled garden is impressive, particularly in getting so much to grow in such an exposed place. Lots of veg in the garden as well as flowers.
The cafe is again not really dog friendly. If the weather is good, you can sit outside, but tough if the weather is against you.
There is a good gift shop which stocks high-quality stuff ( including prints from HRH Cjarles at £3K!).

Dear Richard,
Thank you very much for your review which we really appreciate.
As you say, the walled garden is not accessible with dogs, along with the Castle itself and the tearoom. However the rest of the grounds dogs are very welcome.
Many thanks.

The setting is amazing and clearly steeped in soooo much history. We didn't have time to tour the Castle but can't believe it would have disappointed. Did have time to enjoy the excellent cafe!

Stupidly didn't check opening days when planning our route so turned up on a closed day so can't comment on inside of the castle. The exterior however is stunning and the views from by the castle were incredible. Will 100% visit when we can

We drove up from Glasgow and stayed at the Hotel Melvich in Thurso (you can see my review on this). It was about 32 miles away and took 50 minutes.
From Perth it is about 250 miles and will take a little under 5 hours to drive. The castle website has details on how to get there including, I think, public transport.
Skrevet 9. juni 2018
Hello - could you let me know whether dogs are allowed (on a lead) in the gardens? I am visiting Scotland in June, and it was my uncle's family (Imbert Terry) who I believe sold the property to the Queen Mother, so I would be very interested in coming.
Skrevet 2. mai 2018
My answer is as already relayed by the other two people. The shaded area for the dogs and the exercise area, but they are not allowed in the walled garden or the animal centre.
Having said that the gardens do not cover a large area, they are quite small really, so it should not take to long to look round them while you leave your dog.
Skrevet 9. mai 2018
I have some difficulties with steps and long walks. Is this a problem?
Skrevet 29. desember 2017
The only steps are inside the Castle. Most steps are short, but I think there are about 3 levels to the Castle. I don't remember them being difficult. It is a short distance from the car park to the entrance to the Castle. If you have trouble with long walks, you might eliminate the walk to the animal farm. The gardens are close by, but unless you visit when everything is in bloom, you might consider skipping that as well. You might consider visiting the website and emailing them. The Castle is a very interesting look into the life of the Queen Mum. Hope you can visit.

How long would you need to spend to look round castle and gardens?
Skrevet 19. mai 2017
2-3 Hours depending on whether you go to the Café for refreshments and of course oor lovely weather.
I hope this was a helpful.
Skrevet 23. mai 2017
Okay, what is this castle? Name? History? Significance? How to get to it? How about explanations of the sights for us tourists?

Castle of Mey
Mey, Storbritannia
Hi Gary,
Thank you very much for your query and I am delighted to be able to answer of your questions:
The Castle and Gardens of Mey is situated on the North Coast of Scotland 8 miles west of John O'Groats. You can get to it by various means of transport:
By car - you drive north on the A9 until you reach Thurso then head east for 14 miles until you get to the village of Mey where the Castle is well sign posted.
By aeroplane - there are flights to Wick John O'Groats airport, in Wick 22 miles away, where you can then get a connecting bus to us.
Finally, there are railways stations in both Wick and Thurso which have daily trains from Inverness (the times of connecting buses are on our website).
The Castle itself was the only home Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother ever owned herself, buying it some months after she was widowed in 1952. She formed a Charitable Trust called The Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust in 1996 and left the Castle and it's policies in the Trust's care for the benefit of the local community especially farming, education.
We are open over the Easter weekend for four days and thereafter from the 17th May onwards, please check website for details. I hope that you will be able to visit us one day to enjoy the Castle, gardens, animal centre, visitor centre and meet the team here at Mey.
Best wishes
