Took my 3 children here today and we all loved it. Learned so much. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Great place. My daughter came out saying it was brilliant and of course my 3 year old adored it.

A great visit, to a fantastic museum

What a great find, though check the opening times before you head off.

The museum, which is a former fire station is well laid out, and contains a lot of artifacts and appliances, as well as displays which are really informative.

Even better, the guides were able to share their experiences, including the two fire rescue dogs that Scotland has - who knew!!!

The team make you feel so welcome, and there is no such thing as a daft question. Free entry, though please leave a donation, as this is a wee treasure that needs to be kept for generations to come.

Wonderful experience for all ages

On a recent visit we were warmly greeted by David Cairn who gave us a tour of this amazing place. There are pristine pieces of equipment in excellent condition, lovingly restored. This is a great stop for the whole family. Children will love the helmets, old photos, uniforms, etc. I was surprised when we realized we had spent more than two hours here because there was so much to enjoy.

Only fire museum in Scotland.

Staff give you a warm welcome and ask if you want to tour by yourself and ask questions later. They can also give you a guided tour to your time limitations. A brief history of the fire service and the war years are explained as well.

A huge collection

An amazing collection and very knowledgeable guides made this an excellent few hours. The displayed items include manual, horse drawn and motorised fire engines dating back over 150 years. There is also a huge collection of helmets, uniforms, breathing apparatus and firefighting memorabilia together with displays on the Glasgow Fire Service and it's history.

Brilliant little museum full of surprises

The museum is usually open the 2nd and last Sunday of each month from 12:00 noon till 4 pm but opens at 10:00 when there are cruise ships in the town - the dates and times of these are posted on the front door of the station.

The entrance is through two very large doors into a courtyard

There are appliances and items from the earliest days of firefighting until the mid-sixties. There are lots of illustrated information boards throughout the museum and lots of labels on the machinery and equipment. There is a complement of experienced firefighters on hand to provide fascinating extra information.

The museum not unnaturally concentrates on the history of Greenock in particular and Scotland in general and also has other displays from very disparate parts of the UK.
The information on the Greenock Blitz gives a great insight into what it was like to suffer during a blitz - everyone knows about the London Blitz - far fewer know about the Greenock and Glasgow ones.

My father in law and I - were very lucky to have Graeme Kirkwood as our most informative guide - offering insights from his vast personal knowledge of firefighting - including some very important if not widely known safety tips on phone chargers and their safe use. He pointed out some of the odd features that have been preserved from past use which are now redundant due to changes in technology - the hosepipe drying tower being a special favourite of mine - although the Twin Tower 9/11 painting has also a fascinating story behind it and how a local resident added their own special contribution to it.
My favourite part of the visit was looking at a large painting from the London Blitz - we learned how the war artist narrowly escaped death - just moments before a wall collapsed he was advised by two firefighters to move to a safer place just before the wall collapsed killing them - and how he has placed many fascinating if well-hidden vignettes of life during wartime London.

I am in my sixties and my father in law his mid-eighties - but there were lots of children - some of them quite young - and their parents there when we were.

An excellent and well-appointed museum with lots of fascinating things to look at and touch.
