Castle ruins next to the monument. Not much remains of the castle, but the views of Elgin from the top make the climb worth it.

Well, if you’re climbing up here expecting a castle - I’m afraid you’ll be rather disappointed, as all there’s left is a few mounds of stones as evidence of where it once stood . It was built in the 12th century as a royal castle - believed to be founded by King David l in 1160, as Elgin was granted a royal burgh status that year. Built on the summit of Ladyhill, and with dimensions of 80 metres by 50 metres it must’ve dominated the area back then, Even today the view overlooking the town is very scenic. King Edward l of England claimed the castle as a residence in 1296, and several years later the Scots attacked it twice , setting it on fire. It was repaired in the 14th century by the Earl of Moray, but was ransacked by the Douglas rebellion , then just fell into disrepair. However, it’s worth visiting this lovely spot, and also for the nearby 80ft tall Duke of Gordon monument.

We were in Elgin so popped up to the top of the hill to see the old castle ruins and the monument. The views from the top are lovely. Nice place to stretch the legs. Lots of steps but this was fine for us. Took the dog without any issues.

Ok let’s get one thing out of way, this place is called Ladyhill Castle. There were no ladies when I visited, and definitely no castle. Plenty of hill though.
All joking aside, I probably should have researched this a bit better, but seeing ‘castle’ on my map I went off expecting something a bit more grand…as it turns out all that remains are 2 broken blocks of stone atop the hill.
To compensate there’s a column with a statue of the Duke of Gordon atop it. Legend has it he comes alive at midnight and visits a nearby town for a drink, which doesn’t really reflect well on Elgin’s bars that he eschews them. It does also offer a pretty nice view over the local area once you brave the steps, but the lack of castle in this castle definitely left me a bit cold

In driving through Elgin the Lady Hill Castle is outstanding as is it is at the top of a hill and overlooks the town. If we had time we would have climbed the hill as the views from the top must be amazing.

Whilst my wife had an appointment at the opticians, I decided to walk up this small hill in the centre of the city.
A lovely winter's day and I found this short outing invigorating. Straight away at the main entrance towards the steps, there were info signs/plaques. This continued en-route. An impressive monument and the remains of a castle are at the top of the short walk. A splendid 360 degree view of the surrounding area was worth seeing, away from ground level and listening to the traffic below.
I found that the direction plinth was way out with some of its bearings eg. The Bin (if it means the feature by Buckie?).
When I finished my historical site walk, my wife was still at the opticians.

背の高いモニュメントではないでしょうか。高いから目立ちます。歩きながら眺めただけですが、とても良かったです。

Although very little remains of the old castle, the monument to the Duke of Gordon is very impressive and stands high above the town.

It's free of charge and you have to climb up some stairs. On the top you have a great view over Elgin and surroundings. Well worth a visit if you're in Elgin.
