Warto odwiedzić

Niewielkie muzeum w którym przedstawiono historie miasta oraz jest miejscem wystaw lokalnej sztuki współczesnej. Szczególnie warto dla wystawy związanej z historią włókiennictwa w Paisley.

Came to Paisley for the day as never been, although visit Glasgow often. It was the last weekend of the museum being open before it closed for a refurb. Fantastic old building, I especially liked the Paisley history , and the studio pottery collection (please keep that, never seen one in a museum before) I look forward to visiting again, staff very knowledgeable, and quite rightly proud of their museum. Thank you for the suggestion to walk a little further up the road to admire the architecture of the Thomas Coats Memorial Church, well worth it-I have since been to two concerts there :)

ペイズリー博物館&美術館
sep. 2018 • Alene

I cannot even begin to tell you how much fun this is! I have been to the museum so many times! growing up in the area its always the place to go just to go! then after having kids I wanted to take them so they could see the amazing art and different things they have course we only get to go once a year! since I live 5000 miles away! Always something different! always a little bit of history and heritage to see

Small museum, Caters to school groups, Check out the looms

The volunteer guide at Weaver's Cottage in Kilbarchon suggested this museum would offer an interesting comparison to see how factory weaving differed from in-home weaving. We had some time to kill before our flight out of Glasgow Airport so took a short detour to see the exhibit on Paisley shawls here.

In the 1800s, for almost a century, a Paisley shawl was "the" wedding gift a bride hoped to receive. First based on Kashmir shawls from India, these shawls have iconic status in Scotland's history. This Paisley shawl exhibit, located in the city of Paisley, needs and deserves an injection of energy and vision from a curator who is interested in weaving and/or fashion--as well as an injection of funds for updating. (Paisley must have wealthy donors or businesses who could underwrite such a project.)

The lower level of the exhibit is okay, with lots of interesting info, but somewhat staidly presented. The room felt dark (perhaps to protect the textiles), but instead of creating an aura to suggest you were invited to see something special, it just felt gloomy. A short video would do a lot to engage visitors and liven up this exhibit, which has many "points of entry" for visitors with varied interests (fashion, weaving, industrialization, India's influences on the UK, the city's own history, and even the mathematics of creating these complex designs).

My husband and I were both intrigued by the upper level room that houses several looms and other machines used in textile manufacturing. However, it was difficult to understand the differences between the Jacard and Dobby ("drawboy") looms when viewing them as objects rather than as working machines. I'm not a weaver, but I knew going in that a Jacard loom can raise and lower individual warp threads whereas a Dobby can only lift warp yarns in sections, which means a Jacard can make more complex designs. But how the hole-punched cards (the inspiration for early computing) actually controlled the weaving is still unclear to me. This room could use a flowchart showing the steps in the weaving process (winding pirns, beaming the warp, etc.) and the differences in loom types. A video showing a working loom would be super-helpful.

Pros: The museum is small and has a mixed collection--from mummies to WW1 gas masks to taxidermy--so there is likely to be something that will engage younger school-aged kids. The educational staff at the museum have done a lot to create opportunities for kids to "vote" for their favorite object or do craft projects.

Cons: This museum felt a little "unloved" and in need of updating. A small example: Many of the displays had printed labels inside a plastic sleeve inside a glass case and placed near the floor -- they couldn't be less inviting to an adult. You had to bend over to read and the glare from the plastic/glass combo made it occasionally impossible to decipher the text. We were not alone in being annoyed by this -- we heard three other people mumbling about poor signage. To be fair, there were also large wall posters with curated info, but these were generally to provide context rather than to identify individual pieces. As another reviewer noted, the museum "shop" ( a few abandoned-looking shelves in the entryway) sells polyester scarves made in China with printed paisley designs. Really lame. They should look for or create other items -- if they can't source better textiles, maybe notecards with Paisley designs or a calendar with historical paintings of women wearing these shawls.

I really hope that a museum employee somehow sees this, as this review is genuinely intended to be helpful in suggesting ways this important piece of history could be made more compelling to visitors.

Disaster story
jul. 2018 • Par
This is a complete disaster. The art gallery is closed, and the rets of the museum is in an advanced stage of decay. The so-called 'Paisley shawl' gallery is gloomy, ill-informed (nothing about how Paisley deigns were taken from India), and on the day we were there was 'manned' by a teenager who loudly sniffed his snot every 10 seconds. When I complained to the information desk that there was no information about the gallery closure s on their website, he just laughed at me. One of the worst museums I've ever visited. Do NOT go!

Well laid out museum

I had an hour to spare and decided to dip my toe into Paisley Museum - and very glad I did. It houses a good exhibition on the history of the town then a fine display of Paisley shawls with their stunning patterns and colours. There was an amazing exhibition on about seismic activity when I was there - think it must have been a link up with the Coates Observatory which is very nearby. Could have sat and watched and listened to this for ages noting the Earth's seismic activities across the globe! All free too!!

See Monarch of the Glen before he goes on his travels 🦌
mar. 2018 • Venner
Travelled to see Monarch of the Glen at Paisley Art Museum. Yes we’ve seen the great beast before in Edinburgh but as he is ‘on tour’ we thought we would pay our respects once again. The museum itself is in need of refurbishment and it was fairly deserted on a freezing afternoon. The collaborative work done with local children was interesting but one wonders how many local people do actually visit the place. Many of the staff did not engage with us and looked utterly bored. The seismic activity room which illustrated world seismic activity was really interesting but it was deserted. The section on Textiles and the creation of the famous paisley print needs updating to make it more interactive and inspiring for local children studying textiles. There would be a lot of scope for creative designing for children of all ages who attend local schools.
