A good place to learn about Robbie Burns. An interesting display and excellent cafe. You learn about his early life and subsequent career.

Burns cottage in Alloway village is the real thing where Burns was born and brought up. Lovely gardens too. Get a real feel of Burns there running about helping his Dad. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Great if could buy refreshments and keepsakes there especially on hot day. Pity not used more for events.

Thank you for leaving feedback from your visit.
We are reviewing our events programme for next year and hope to do more with the smallholding space, perhaps for family workshops and we are hoping to have some sort of family day that would celebrate the cottage during summer. Keep an eye on our social media and the NTS Website for updates

Visited a while back and will return . Had a loely time reading details in the displays in main building and explored the grounds and further afield. Very pleased when my wife bought me a book on Rabbie's poems. Would recommend. (Also, the Cafe had tasty food)

We knew a little about Robert Burns and that he wrote poems but found out a lot more and what he achieved in his short life. Found out about his different poems, his mistresses and illegitimate children. He certainly did a lot in his short life!

Only gave 3 stars because although a very interesting place, several of the interactive exhibits in the main museum where the documents are are inoperative. Plus several of the listening phones you pick up to listen don't work. Was left with impression that the main centre museum being allowed to deteriorate. This is unfortunate as many visitors must travel huge distances to come here. Perhaps put more effort into the museum rather than focusing on the cafes and shops.

Sorry that you were disappointed in your visit to the museum, Not clear if you feedback to our team during your visit. Hand sets are checked daily and can be rebooted if there is an issue.
We have had some issues in sourcing replacement projectors and parts for the interactive displays, but we are working with the install company to try and resolve this and we would like to ensure you that the museum, collection, cottage and wider site are very much our focus.
The cafe and retail shop provide very important revenue streams to support everything we do on site to maintain the collection, and we are very proud that our cafe provides an important space for our local community as well as museum visitors.
We hope that you will be able visit us again and find that we have been able to resolve some of the issues you found with the equipment.
Thank you for leaving your review

When driving towards prestwick we saw sign for museum, as it was Sunday 11th they also had vintage car show, as it rained in the morning we did not think it would be a good visit. happily sun shine and cloudless sky greeted us, museum has a great selection of artifacts. as advised it was a little dark to preserve artifacts but I took pictures on phone no flash and this made all clearer.
FYI you have to stay near cashier in coffee shop to wait for your coffee.

Thank you for taking your time to review your visit, we are delighted that not only did you enjoy your time with us, we also managed to exceed your expectations.
As coffees are hand made, depending on the order size or how busy we are, there can be a slight delay and payment may be processed before we deliver to your tray.
If you would prefer to wait at a table, once payment is processed we can give you a buzzer to let you know your order is ready, especially if you want to take advantage of the good weather and sit out side. We are also happy to bring coffees to your chosen table if you have small children or need assistance carrying things to your table.
We hope you visit again soon. The 1/2nd July marks 200 years of Burns Monument and we will be celebrating with family activities in the Monument Garden.

Can we bring our dogs
Susan C
Alloway, UK2 bidrag
Hello
Dogs on a lead are very welcome in the outdoor parts of the site so you can bring them into the Museum Gardens, there is a gate at the back of the property to access that, the Monument Gardens, Poet's Path and into the cottage grounds. However we ask that you do not take into the cottage or the museum building.
We ask that you keep your dog on a lead as not everyone is comfortable with loose dogs and particularly in the Museum Gardens there can be a lot of children. As responsible dog owners I am sure you would also clean up after your dogs. Water bowls are available at the Museum and there is a covered area if wish to sit and eat outside.
I hope this helps, Susan Visitor Services Manager

Does this place let in English National Trust members in for free with their card?
Susan C
Alloway, UK2 bidrag
Hello
There is a reciprocal agreement which allows National Trust members worldwide to use their cards to gain entry to National Trust for Scotland properties, so the answer is yes, you can use your National Trust card to enter any National Trust for Scotland property.
Please note that each cardholder must have their card with them and we are unable to access the NT database to check membership status should you forget your card. If you do not have your card without we would unfortunately have to charge membership.

Does it cost to visit the gardens, gift shop etc? Or just the museum? My dad and boyfriend and big museum fans and we will be bringing our dog along but this looks like an excellent place for a little walk and a nice morning out.

Hi the only two parts of the site which require entry tickets are the museum and the cottage, dogs are welcome in both the monument and museum gardens on a lead. The museum garden has outside tables and chairs so you can enjoy coffee or a meal outside with your dogs, we also have water bowls so you can water your dogs. the Museum is situated in the main building at Murdoch's Loan but you can enter the shop and café at this site without going into the museum, unfortunately dogs are not allowed in the building but mentioned before there is the opportunity for them to join you in the gardens. hope this helps and we look forward to welcoming you all soon!

My friend says there's an old fiddle in the museum and i was wondering if i took along some sheet music, if i'd get to play it or not?
Susan C
Alloway, UK2 bidrag
We think you may be referring to the "Gregg Fiddle" which belonged to William Gregg and was played during dance classes at the Bachelors Club, Tarbolton which were attended by Robert Burns.
This precious instrument was fully resorted by the National Trust for Scotland last year. Due to it age and value it's only played on special occasions by our appointed fiddler to the Bachelors Club. Until recently this was Wallace Galbraith, however he has recently handed the reins to Alistair McCulloch of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Unfortunately we would not be able to allow you to play this instrument on a visit to the Museum, although you would be able to see it on display most of the time. Presently it is New York with Alistair and being played at fundraising events for the Trust, it will be back on display later in April.
Do you accept dogs?

We (two) are staying in Inverkip and can easily get ourselves down for a day by train or car.
What is the best way to experience this? Just show up at the Museum and buy tickets? Book in advance? Book a tour?
We would appreciate any information that you can give us. thank you.

I'll be visiting with a group from Edinburgh, but would like to make a day trip out of it and be back to Edinburgh in time for a Ceilidh dance starting at 7:30. I understand this means I'll have to be at the Ayr train station by about 4:30, so I'm just wondering how much time at the museum is appropriate for a group of roughly 10 American university students who will be receiving a lecture from the professor traveling with the group. Any feedback or helpful tips you can provide are greatly appreciated.

Depends on the weather how long you will spend at this attraction as the gardens are a major part of the attraction but not if wet. As to the time taken to get back to Edinburgh then I suggest you look at the Railway timetable which will tell you when you could arrive back in Edinburgh. The bus service from this attraction is hourly!!My husband and I walked from Ayr (about 2 miles) to the attraction and took the bus back as it was then raining
