Alloway has a range of Burns related attractions with the museum the central site where there is an excellent display of items associated with his family history, a good cafe and gardens and what looked to be a large adventure playground for kids

The surly and "dour" service by staff in the cafe yesterday would appal even Rabbie Burns! For customers to feel they are being a nuisance is not a pleasant experience. How dare I expect a cup with my pot of tea!
Our group all agreed this has to be the worst service and food quality we have experienced at any NTS attraction. We will not be back. So disappointing.

Spent a lovely few hours wondering around his house and the museum and gardens which are close by. The guide was very helpful and knowledgeable. Well worth a visit!

What New Year Eve celebration would be complete without a rendition of Auld Lang Syne, a song composed by Robert Burns, who lived a surprisingly short 37 years [1759–1796]?

This site is maintained by the National Trust for Scotland and comprises Burns’ Cottage, his birthplace. A Burns-based museum has existed since 1903 [think Wright brothers’ first flight], and Burns’ Cottage has exhibited artifacts related to Scotland’s national Bard as early as the 1820s. Quaint thatched roofs are on most buildings in the complex, and doorways were not intended for tall people. Take care not to knock your noggin☺

There is far more to do than visit a humble cottage. Paths meander through a pleasant park environment void of city noises. Invest some time to relax, enjoy nature, and reflect on the peaceful environment that inspired Burns’s writing.

Owned by the National Trust of Scotland but English NT membership can gain free entry. It doesn’t take that long to look around but it certainly gives an insight into what life was like in Burns’ lifetime.
There’s a nearby car park and everything is on one level so anyone with mobility problems could cope.

I'm not a huge Burns fan but I really enjoyed this visit. The NTS deserve credit for bringing so many facets of this Burns experience (the museum, the cottage, the monument, the gardens) without turning it into a theme park. We went thinking we would just be there for an hour or so but spent the whole afternoon there. Certainly, the weather was kind. My only criticism of the museum was the lighting of the exhibits. The reason for the low level was explained but many of the descriptions are simply illegible because of that. I would encourage NTS to find a solution. We had coffee and a scone and then lunch in the cafe and it was very good indeed. The home made pork and haggis sausage roll was excellent (and the cloeslaw was very good). I must finally comment on the staff. I think they are the best of any of the NTS attractions we have visited. They were, without exception, friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and coped well under stress. A credit to Scottish hospitality.

The museum itself is wonderful, its well worth spending a full day taking in all the sights around Alloway, but the cafe was a waste of money.
We got cheese and tomato toasties which were completely flavourless, bland and just horrible.
From cheap ingredients, salad tomatoes which were not even cut properly, flavourless cheese, horrible coleslaw and bad service and expensive for what we recived, almost £25 down the drain, we won't be wasting my money here again!
We had heard great things and been wanting to try it for a while but unfortunately we won't be returning here for food ever again!
Its by far the worst NTS cafe we have ever been too.....

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent visit to our museum and café at Alloway. We're thrilled to hear that you found the museum itself to be wonderful and worth spending a full day exploring. However, we're sorry to learn about your disappointing experience at our café. We understand how frustrating it can be when dining expectations are not met, and we regret that we fell short on this occasion. Your feedback regarding the ingredients, presentation, and service is incredibly valuable to us, and we assure you that we will address these concerns with our café team to ensure improvements are made. We appreciate your honesty and regret that we were unable to meet your expectations during your visit. We do hope that you will consider giving us another chance in the future to provide you with a more enjoyable dining experience. Once again, thank you for bringing these issues to our attention, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back soon.

Thank for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit and you also managed to see the wider parts of the site like the Auld Kirk and the Brig, which both play such prominent roles in Tam 'O Shanter, the poem that Burns set in this area. Please do come a visit us again soon, we'd be delighted to welcome you back and with so much in the museum we are certain you would find something else of interest that you hadn't noticed first time round. Thank you again for reviewing us!

Arrived at the visitor centre cafe today with friends and my son after walking for an hour in the cold and rain. We were all hungry and looking forward to a hot lunch. On arrival at the front door at 1.28pm a sign informed us there would be no hot food orders after 1.50pm. We were pleased that we still had a 20 minute window to order lunch.

We started to queue and after 5 minutes a man put another sign at the end of the bar area saying no more hot food would be available. I asked if that applied to people already in the queue and he replied that he didn't know because " I've just been told to put a sign up".

There was no further communication from any of the other 4 staff on duty who buzzed around removing food from the food display cases and there was a lot of confusion from a number of family groups waiting to order.

Eventually we reached the front of the queue and were told that the only options were hot drinks, tomato soup or a "kid's sandwich" . Apparently adult sandwiches were not available and were also classed as hot food.

Very disappointed as a local bringing my friends who were visiting from down South to the museum for the first time. We were all starving, (especially my 7 year old) and had checked the opening times before leaving the house. Really poor communication from the staff who could easily have spoken to customers on arrival at the cafe and communicated the situation to keep everyone updated. As usual, chaotic service let's this place down.

Luckily we had a lovely lunch and hospitality down the road at Poet's Corner.

I know that you contacted us directly with your observations noted here, and that you received a response from my colleague, so I am sharing that again to this site for anyone reading your review. "We are sorry that we fell short in meeting your expectations on this occasion. The café experiences high volumes of visitors at once and often the queue becomes lengthy. The team try their best to work through it, however, due to unforeseen staff shortages with the winter flu, the team may not have been in the best position to manage this effectively. In terms of the early closure of the kitchen, this was poorly communicated to you. We had issues with suppliers fulfilling our orders and being extremely busy, a lot of the key menu items were out of stock by 2.30pm. This is 30 mins earlier than when the kitchen normally closes. We are happy to share we are planning a large investment into the servery this year, to ensure a more efficient service and we are happy to share more information with you if required. We would also welcome any further feedback, regarding the Café at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, directly via email : Burns@nts.org.uk. Thank you for supporting us and hope this has not put you off returning"

Really disappointed
We had travelled from Gloucestershire to visit friends in Scotland… bringing our wee dog ‘Bonnie’ with us…. The weather was inclement - in fact raining cats and dogs!! Happy days we were welcomed and Bonnie was offered doggie treats upon arrival… 🐾🐾 We sat down in the cafe and one of our party went to order coffee and cakes… however after a few minutes we were asked to leave as no dogs allowed - apart from outside (cold and raining…) No one around us had raised an eyebrow - everyone was busy chatting and having a lovely time - she is so tiny I had picked her up and she was sat on my lap…. Invisible Completely ruined our experience. I can only imagine someone had seen her from afar and complained…. We didn’t spend in your shop nor in your cafe…. you need to move with the times. We are National Trust members and are used to restrictions regarding four legged friends but there are normally small areas indoors where dogs are allowed. The Fox in Troon benefitted as we went there had a wonderful lunch and spent £70😱.. think on …

Thank you for visiting us. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed that Bonnie could not sit with you but unfortunately there is not an area of the cafe that we can make dog friendly and as we have a lot of older regular who do not feel comfortable with dogs in the cafe we do ask people to take their four legged friends to the outside seated area. For conservation reasons we cannot allowed dogs in the Museum exhibit or cottage either though we are happy for visitors to use the wider part of the site to stretch their legs. We do find most visitors check first to ensure their is access and which parts of the site but it’s unfortunate the the team member offering Bonnie treats did not check your intentions and could have avoided your disappointment. Thanking for drawing this to our attention.
