Delightful views at every turn, with Gylen Castle being the highlight. It’s often rainy, so side paths can be muddy. The tea house serves better pastry than tea, but is fun. Two farm stops with fun goods charges by way of honesty boxes. All around, a lovely experience.
Cars are not allowed on the island, and parking is tight on the Gallanach side.
Ferry details: the Gallanach-Kerrera ferry runs every 30 min and gets you to the trailhead. Must pay online beforehand. They run as many times as needed to get everyone across. Note: there are no buses from Oban to Gallanach. It’s a £8ish taxi ride in 2024 or 2ish mile walk each way. You can start at the Gallanach ferry point then hike to the North marina and get a water taxi to Oban (or vice versa). Just a couple more miles enjoying the island. But the water taxis can sellout (reserve ahead of time) and don’t run frequently. Hope that helps! Bikes are welcome and a great option. Bike rental on the island is unreliable.

We love going over to Kerrera and the round walk is beautiful but you can now only pay by Smartphone if you get oi the ferry point, or at the Calmac office in Oban. So much simpler when you just paid the ferryman in cash. If you get there and dont have a Smartphone, tough. Not impressed with that at all

The island of the sheep, great nature walk (10 miles for the loop so be prepared), lots of sheep’s, some cows and nice rhea house , a castle ruïne and a monument. On a good day, it s a very entertaining walk. Easy to reach from Oban by ferry, but count at least 5 to 6 hours to enjoy at the most.

We walked clockwise around the southern loop. The route is 'undulating' but not challenging. Lovely views from the start, continuing each corner that we turned - stunning. Tea garden was a welcome coffee/toilet stop; Gylen Castle a lovely detour with more great views and the farm shop towards the end of the loop was another pleasant surprise with some lovely homemade ice cream and an honesty box (and some, clearly, honest customers).
The ferry deserves a mention: about 2 miles from Oban so very walkable but a little dull and adds 4 miles to the day; limited parking at the ferry in a small car park and on a grass verge. Ferry appears to run on demand with timetable a guide rather than an absolute, running more frequently than suggested. Tickets must be ordered on-line; recommend doing this ahead of time as there is some form-filling to do and only 12 places on the ferry.

We visited on a lovely day. The passenger only ferry takes you over from Oban in about 5 minutes. We took our dogs (must remain on lead at all times) and they enjoyed the walk as much as we did. We got off the ferry and walked 2.5 miles to the tea garden where we got a delicious bagel and coffee and then visited kerera castle before the 2.5 mile walk back. A great day trip 👍

Beautiful island that is easily accessible from Oban. There are various walks that take between 2 and 4 hours that cover the entire island including a ruined castle. There is a bus service to the ferry from Oban or you can easily walk to it.
The ferry takes only 5 mins to cross and the fare for to is about £7 return. ( ferry is operated by Calmac and you can pay with cash but they prefer card).
There are no pubs, hotels or shops on Kererra, so bring your own refreshment. There is a tea room, with toilets, that is open from Easter but that is it. There are no toilets at the ferry ports and the only one we found was in a field next to Gylen Castle.
If you go to see the castle then be aware that the ground can get very sodden so be careful.
There are several hills to climb on the southern route and the tarmac turns to stones.
The northern route is much easier as a brand new road has been built.
No cars, except locals, are allowed on the island but you could hire a bike from Oban and I think there are hire bikes available on the island, but check first as it was not open when we visited in late March.
There is an old school that is being converted to a community hall and there is a box that you can make donations to outside.
The northern point of the island was home to Sunderland flying boats during WW2 with many of the aircrew been housed in what is now the Regent Hotel and DungallanHouse.

Took the small Cal Mac ferry over from the quay point on coast south of Oban, which took us over to the Island of Kerrera. Captain so very friendly and interesting to talk to. The weather was against us but we still went even though it was pouring of rain. If we'd stayed in Oban we still would have got soaked. So went a walk with a good heart on the island. Walked south to Horseshoe Bay and the ruins of Gylen Castle, unfortunately the tea garden was not open, out of season. The next day we took the water taxi over to the north of Kerrera Island, where the yachts are and walked up to Hutchesons Monument but the tea shop there was also closed as out of season. Still enjoyed both trips though to Kerrera.

Is there parking at the ferry location?
Skrevet 28. april 2019
Hello. Would we be able to take 3 motorbikes across on the ferry, purely with the intention of locating a camping spot with the bikes. They are adventure bikes so tracks / rough terrain us not an issue. Thanks
Skrevet 17. april 2019
Hi, Sue. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Can you take your car across and are the roads good please?
Skrevet 25. mai 2018
Passenger ferry only (takes 5 minutes). About 40 minute walk to cafe and castle.
Skrevet 28. mai 2018
Sorry cannot tell you. It was fairly busy when I was there. I would give them a ring. Nice spot though but remember you are on a small island although it is fairly close to Oban.
Skrevet 30. august 2016
hi can anyone tell if cycling is possible on Kerrera. thanks
Skrevet 14. mars 2015
Indeed! We get lots of cyclists on Kerrera, but be aware that the track is full of potholes and is not for the faint hearted!
