We visited on a lovely day. The passenger only ferry takes you over from Oban in about 5 minutes. We took our dogs (must remain on lead at all times) and they enjoyed the walk as much as we did. We got off the ferry and walked 2.5 miles to the tea garden where we got a delicious bagel and coffee and then visited kerera castle before the 2.5 mile walk back. A great day trip 👍

Beautiful island that is easily accessible from Oban. There are various walks that take between 2 and 4 hours that cover the entire island including a ruined castle. There is a bus service to the ferry from Oban or you can easily walk to it.
The ferry takes only 5 mins to cross and the fare for to is about £7 return. ( ferry is operated by Calmac and you can pay with cash but they prefer card).
There are no pubs, hotels or shops on Kererra, so bring your own refreshment. There is a tea room, with toilets, that is open from Easter but that is it. There are no toilets at the ferry ports and the only one we found was in a field next to Gylen Castle.
If you go to see the castle then be aware that the ground can get very sodden so be careful.
There are several hills to climb on the southern route and the tarmac turns to stones.
The northern route is much easier as a brand new road has been built.
No cars, except locals, are allowed on the island but you could hire a bike from Oban and I think there are hire bikes available on the island, but check first as it was not open when we visited in late March.
There is an old school that is being converted to a community hall and there is a box that you can make donations to outside.
The northern point of the island was home to Sunderland flying boats during WW2 with many of the aircrew been housed in what is now the Regent Hotel and DungallanHouse.

Took the small Cal Mac ferry over from the quay point on coast south of Oban, which took us over to the Island of Kerrera. Captain so very friendly and interesting to talk to. The weather was against us but we still went even though it was pouring of rain. If we'd stayed in Oban we still would have got soaked. So went a walk with a good heart on the island. Walked south to Horseshoe Bay and the ruins of Gylen Castle, unfortunately the tea garden was not open, out of season. The next day we took the water taxi over to the north of Kerrera Island, where the yachts are and walked up to Hutchesons Monument but the tea shop there was also closed as out of season. Still enjoyed both trips though to Kerrera.

This was a great day trip - the ferry runs from Gallanach just south of Oban and takes about 5 min. The ferry carpark was quite heavily parked up- don't leave it too late to go. The ferry takes 12 foot passengers at a time and you can buy a return ticket by card.

There are lots of different walks - we did the one south to Gylen Castle and the tea shop. It was 4km. Most of it is gravel track, fairly flat but with a hill towards the end. Great views of the see and back towards Oban. It is well signposted.

I would recommend trainers or walking boots - the track is mostly gravel and the bit at the end towards the castle is really steep. There's very little cover- on a hot day take extra water and sun cream.

The castle is really spectacular, perched on a rocky outcrop over the sea. It's hard to find anywhere for a picnic that doesn't smell overwhelmingly of sheep, but there's a pebbly beach just before the castle which was a good place to sit and for kids to play in the stream.

The tea shop is well worth a visit, but isn't
open every day so check their website when planning a trip. Great lemon drizzle cake. You order at their front gate and there's a seating area just up the hill with a marquee area if needed.

Our 14 year old said " this day wasn't bad' which I take as high praise.

Son and I with our Westie got a weather window on Saturday between the 2 named storms. 1235 ferry over headed up hill past old schoolhouse currently funding to convert into community centre (please leave donation on island community just giving page). Passed Pigs, goats, highland cows, hens and sheep keeping our westies interest. Track then becomes grassier and drops down to bay on the other side of the island with views over to snowy Mull. Passed boatyard and final muddy section of path to our lunch spot at the Hutcheson monument overlooking Oban. We returned to ferry by newly created ''highway'' to complete 9km circuit with 190m of ascent in leisurely 3hrs. Needed 3 trips to return all 24+ passengers on 3.30pm ferry, as only takes 12 at a time. Great day out and will need to return to explore the souther half with castle, tea room and gardens.

Have now visited Kerrera at least 4 times and have always enjoyed the very 'out of the way' feel you encounter in an island which is both very close to the mainland and yet is a world of its own. The ferry run by Calmac runs on a fairly frequent timetable, even during winter and the main path around the generally southern part of the island is an interesting, if sometimes slightly challenging, encounter. The views are often spectacular and the diversity of terrain from the fairly hilly upland to coastal. At this time of year the 'tea garden' was understandably closed. Recommended.

Spent a fantastic 5 hours walking around the South of the island. Off the ferry, up the hill towards the old school then follow the tracks. Fantastic views, wild, unspoiled. The walk was stiff going for us ( elderly) but it was beautiful. Tea room was closed as it was November but we hit it lucky with fantastic clear cold weather. If you like silence, scenery and space it's a place to go.

My wife and I went to Kerrera today. Had to wait a little while for the ferry as it was bringing sheep over to the main land to go to market. Fascinating to watch. We walked round the loop on the southern end of the island. Really enjoyable day out. Not too difficult walking and would recommend to anyone.

1. Parking at the ferry car park quickly fills up. We parked on a grass verge and had no bother although I have read elsewhere on tripadvisor of someone who got a ticket for parking on a verge.
2. Ferry crossings go as per the timetable and also in between if there are enough people. Tickets are paid for on board with a contactless card. Monzo not accepted.
3. We did the 6 mile walk which took around 4hrs at a leisurely pace with a lunch stop. Take a packed lunch and drinks as the cafe isn’t open every day.
4. There is an ‘honesty’ style shop selling cold drinks, ice cream, a few cakes and frozen meat. You log in the ledger what you got and pay in cash or by BACS.
5. There’s only one toilet that we found, near the cafe and it doesn’t have running water so take hand sanitiser or enough water to wash your hands too.
6. Really recommend visiting the island - it is absolutely stunning and I had a brilliant day :)
