There is little choice when it comes to shops in the scenic areas of Lewis and Harris which of course is great, I love the fact the islands are not commercialised but sometimes you want somewhere to pick up pretty gifts and browse on a rainy day while on route from one beautiful place to another.
Sallie Jayne's new boutique offers just that! I was visiting the island last week and was delighted to come across this little gem of a store, look out for the sea blue fronted shop which can even be seen from cafe Sonas at Port of Ness harbour if you look up the hill to the row of houses in the distance. (follow the sign to Adabroc and Breanish Tweed, it's shortly after the sign).
Sallie is a bridalwear designer and makes gowns for the ladies on the islands and further afield, and the new gift boutique sits in front of her sewing studio so it is open most days.
Inside you will find gifts of all price ranges and tweed items galore, from small purses to beautiful Harris tweed suits handmade by Sallie. She also stocks a select range of other handmade items by people the island and a gorgeous collection of Harris tweed by the meter if you fancy making your own. The most notable thing is that the tweed colours are bright and colourful when you walk into the shop.
There is parking on the drive and the shop is on ground floor level, it's not too crammed either giving you a lovely luxury shopping experience without feeling like you can't touch anything. It's friendly and welcoming too so you can browse and take your time without feeling like you are being watched or on a tour of the shop which I felt in some other shops on the islands.
Sallie's tweed womens suits are fabulous too and not over priced, I picked up a gorgeous green Harris tweed waistcoat that has a waterfall dipped back on it, and a super stylish pair of tweed shorts! I couldn't resist the ballet style satin cami that goes with them.
Overall a must see when in Lewis and visiting the top of the island, especially as almost all of the items are handmade and local, and not massed produced items you can find at home, so you know you will find something unique.
