Excellent tour by Elaine our guide. Didn't realise this hidden gem existed behind the school. Beautiful gardens and the castle is very well kept. I would highly recommend

We very much enjoyed our tour of Drimnagh Castle on Monday, 28th February 2022. The castle itself is beautifully restored. Our tour guide was very friendly and had an in depth knowledge of the castle. His personal connection to the castle and the local area really enhanced this tour.

The castle is hidden away between industry and as you are going there it might seem like you wont find it. The castle has opening hours but as we arrived the door was closed. We rang and luckily could get a tour but would recommend to see if you can book in advance!
The tour itself it lovely and the guide we had was very knowledgeable about the history of Ireland and the castle. He was very helpful and friendly!

I had a wonderful tour of Drimnagh Castle in Dublin. The castle was built by the Normans in the 13th century, and is remarkably intact. It is the only remaining moated castle in Ireland. It has a battlement tower, restored great hall, and lovely parterre gardens. My tour guide, Denise, was a well-informed and witty guide with great stories about the building and the people who lived there. Some of the stories are not for the faint of heart, and I don't just mean the ghost! Highly recommended.

I was greeted by the king of the castle, well actually he was the maintenance man, but he was sitting in a throne when I arrived. I found the tour, lead by John, very interesting. John presented different perspectives of architectural history and processes of restoring this historical structure. The tour was about an hour.
I took the bus from county centre in Dublin and took a short walk to the castle.

What a wonderful place! Drimnagh Castle is Ireland's ONLY moated castle which still has its surrounding water defences intact. I found that amazing. Dating back to the 13th century, the original occupants were Norman knights. The wooden drawbridge is no longer there but was replaced with a stone bridge in 1780. Its history is a fascinating one and it's been used in a number of films. It's well worth doing a tour of the castle which only costs €6. You will get to see the the Great Hall, the Undercroft with its sinister 'Murder Hole', the wonderful chandelier which came from the movie Excalibur, the Medieval toileting area and in particular the secret passageway (no pics allowed here...) I really enjoyed my tour with Elaine who I had all to myself (it was off-peak) to ply with questions, and she really seemed to have a passion for the site. The gardens are gorgeous ( free to enter but donations are gratefully accepted) and she recommended that I come back again in Summer when everything is in full bloom. i'll definitely do that. It's only a few kilometres from the city centre so if you're interested in medieval history or old houses, then this is definitely the experience for you. No hoards of tourists either so it really is a brilliant little find,

I never realised there was a castle in Drimnagh until very recently. I visited the castle a few days ago and being off season, it was just me so I had my own private tour guide, who was excellent, John is his name. It's a small castle but has a lot of history and it's well worth a visit. It's Ireland's only moated castle. Definitely recommend checking it out!

I was pleasantly surprised that the Castle was still in use for seasonal functions. This wonderful castle is a quick view with a beautiful moat and garden area for beautiful picture options.

Это не просто место, где можно пробежать, я бы посоветовал уделить время изучению двух этажей, доступных для публики.

We had to climb up some narrow, somewhat winding stairs. There was no other obvious entry but we did not ask.

Well you learn something new everyday..I had not heard of Uber before. I drove there myself. It is a short tour around the castle. It's lovely but I think getting the Luas or a bus would be cheaper.
Is there a fee for entry?

Yes, we paid after the tour. I think it was about 4.50 euros per person. They do have a website and you can get more detailed info there.

I agree that taking a bus is much easier and the bus stop is in front of the castle.

one or two hours would be enough to see it, it is well worth seeing though.
and if you want food & drink try the Half Way House just across the road, have a look at the lovely old style bar there.

How do we get there from downtown Dublin?

Hi, you can get a 18 or 151 Dublin Bus and then walk a short distance to the castle entrance. Just ask your driver where to get off.
You could also get a taxi and ask to get out at Long Mile Road, Drimnagh.
Thanks
