Begge ganger, utsikten over beehive hytter var imponerende.

My wife always wanted to visit Skellig Michael which meant i did too. The whole experience was never to be forgotten from the crew on the boat Skellig crest to the landing the history lesson , wildlife scenery and The Monastery with the engineered cocoon huts . Was just walking around with sheer wonderment and on a rock in the Atlantic Ocean just an atmosphere of calm. Never to be forgotten.

Amazing views, great hike up the mountain for those fit enough to do it. Our skipper on our boat out to
the island was informative and had a great sense of humor. The staff on the island were extremely helpful

We were so lucky that we were the first trip in a week to get to go to Skellig Michael. The force was definitely with us since I did not book an extra trip the next day in case ours was cancelled. We did our tour through Skellig Michael Boat trips and our boat was Lady Clare. The skies were cloudy when we left the dock and the water was a little rough on the way there. Several people on our boat were sick, so if you have a tendency for sea sickness, bring your sea bands (the boat provides the buckets). Once on the island, we had 2 and 1/2 hours to explore, which is plenty of time. Again the force was with us because the clouds parted and we saw the sun for the first time in days. You can climb the stairs at your own pace, so take your time. My daughter is afraid of heights so she bear crawled in some spots to keep her footing. When you get to the top of the steps where all of the beehive huts are located, there is a guide that gives the history of the island and the monks that lived there. You can walk inside the huts, so we took full advantage of getting some alone time while most of our tour mates were listening to the guide. I think there was only one other tour group on the island with ours, so it really is a nice intimate experience and you are able to get many clean photos. We had started heading down long before they told us our time was up. We used the free time to use the restrooms. When it was time to leave, they gave a quick view of the side of the island, showing us where the monks used to arrive before a dock was built. They also passed by Little Skellig and talked about the birds before we headed back. This was such an amazing experience and worth the money.

We visited this incredible archipelago made up of two islands in June 2023, it was my wife and I. Here is all the practical information.
First of all, booking is mandatory because a maximum of 120 people per day can get off on the main island (you cannot go down to the other one because it is a vertical rock), carried by a maximum of 10 boats carrying 12 people each. On the boat there is the pilot and the companion who both will not go to the island. Our companion, a woman, had her bathing suit on because during the time we were on the island, she took the opportunity to swim and sunbathe on the pier. You can book either online or by going on site: we stayed in a small house nearby for 5 nights so we booked the excursion on site. The most reliable and professional agency is The Skellig Experience Visitor Center” (closed during the winter) which is found as soon as you set foot on Valentia Island, on the left, after having crossed the approximately 200 meters of bridge that connects it to land. The Skellig Experience is made up of a building that includes a bar/restaurant, a shop, a (free) museum inherent to the place and a projection room, like a cinema, which shows you the story of Skellig Michael (it's in English but they give you a brochure in Italian; you can see the projection if you buy the ticket for the excursion, it lasts 15 minutes). We saw the screening and the museum the day we booked the excursion so we could, on the day of the excursion (4 days later), focus only on it. The reservation also includes packed food.
There are two possibilities: either the excursion which involves circumnavigation only (no landing) or disembarkation (landing) and the price, obviously, changes; we are approximately 60 euros each for no landing and 120 euros each for landing. There's no need to think twice, I recommend landing, like we did. When we booked it was Friday 16th June and the 1st day for landing was Wednesday 20th, the last day we were in the area, stroke of luck. So, please, if you go in August, book the landing at least a month in advance, otherwise you will only have the circumnavigation to do.
The meeting point is there, at the centre: if you have already seen the screening you must meet half an hour before, otherwise 1 hour before because they will show you the screening. You can also visit the museum the next day. There is a huge free car park open with the same opening hours as the centre, 100 meters after it.
The boat leaves from the “Skellig rock boat tour” pier located 100 meters from the center. Once you get on the boat they give you a life jacket, the journey lasts about 50 minutes during which the guide, every now and then, gives you some info (in English) on the surrounding area. When we left it was pouring but during the boat ride the sky turned a blinding blue that accompanied us all day, another stroke of luck. During the 50 minute journey the sea was rough but no one had stomach problems, not even on the return.
There are no toilets on the boat, so it is advisable to go to the center to do it. The toilets, free of charge, can be found 5 minutes after disembarking at Skellig Michael”.
Once disembarked, you follow a single path (both for the outward and return journey) which gradually becomes steeper, made up of stone slabs, built at the time by the monks. There are rules to respect as going up and down is no joke, in some parts the path is exposed and you have to pay attention. Over the years, 2 fatal accidents have also occurred because those who had them leaned too far to take photos. However, no problem, the path is always at least one meter wide. Be careful that you can slip especially if the slabs are wet. Those who go up have the right of way, those who come down wait. Along the entire path we caught thousands of puffins (Puffins), you can almost touch them, they are everywhere. In an hour or so you can almost reach the top where there is, let's say, the stone area that forms the monastery made up of some "trulli" and several walls that delimit the internal and external parts, i.e. the ravine. The view is unique. Then you go down the same path. You cannot eat along the way, you do it on the way back while you are on the pier waiting for the return time. However, no one will shoot you if you have some snacks along the way, the important thing is not to make crumbs or, worse, leave papers of any kind.
We left with the boat at 9:30 and disembarked at 10:20. The same boat that took us back left at 2pm, so we met at the pier at least 10 minutes earlier. However, the guide checks the names to avoid leaving anyone on the island.
Returning, the boat passed, slowing down, in front of the smaller island where a huge colony of gannets is housed.
The places I mentioned before can easily be found on Google Maps.
A few days later we also went to Blasket Island, if you want to read my review based on practical information look for it on Tripadvisor: I haven't published it yet, but I will do so shortly.

End of season. A feeling for the rough Altantic but a fun ride out. Jay and Nick were both great 👍

Great tour guide and the group was great. He even took photos for all of us. I can highly recommend the tour. I underestimated the cold a bit and bought a sweater in the village beforehand. Quite a nice, great place.

Skellig is incredible. We did the skellig landing tour. On arrival, we were told that the swell meant that we would not be able to land. The boat operators had emailed us earlier in the morning to say this was a strong possibility.

Thankfully, the decision was reversed and we left just after 10am. The boat was very small and the boat journey is stunning with beautiful views. We were taken around the little skellig and then landed on skellig michael. The journey was a little rough and I got sick. However landing on skellig this was forgotten.
The island is cool. There is quite a steep climb up to the top but it is well worth it. The views are incredible as is the monastery with its beehive huts.
The guides on the island give a safety briefing before going up the steps and a brief history of the island at the top.
We were brought around the back of the island to see the lighthouse on the boat journey back.
I have wanted to go to skellig for years and it more than lived up to expectations particularly after the initial disappointment of it being cancelled and then uncancelled. I can't recommend this highly enough although I do think the boat journey is quite expensive.

It's one of those gems that take extra effort and patience... endurance... to fully appreciate - getting here on a rough hour boat ride is one thing, then climbing up the stairs (I normally have fear of heights but did well, my wife no fear of heights struggled greatly, especially on the way down and had some vertigo issues) - also add on top of this that your boat may be cancelled due to weather conditions or our tour cut by 1h due to weather conditions changing and people can "burn" themselves - but once you do get to experience and go through it you will remember and appreciate this amazing island for the rest of your life!

If you love Puffins (who doesnt) there were absolutely tones of them, more even than we experienced in Iceland at the same time of the year in 2022 :)

There are different companies doing the tours - some have bigger better looking boats (probably providing better comfort too) than others so choose wisely - I have reviewed our experience separately with the company from Valentia Island if you are interested see the separate review

TIP: bring some water and food with you - there are restrooms on the island nowadays but no vendors and considering the boat ride is about 1h each way and most tours leave you on the island for about 3h you got about 5h or more so small snack and something to drink is a must - especially after those stairs :) also bring some layers with you, you do warm up going up and being exposed to the sun but it does get windy and also colder when the sun gets behind clouds

Sceilig Mhichíl is a stunningly beautiful place. From the scenery to the wildlife to the history it is a trip not to be missed. The guides on the island are excellent.

The steps are steep but definitely doable. 2½ hours is plenty of time to get up and down even with lots of breaks!

I have to give a special mention to Brendan and David of The Force Awakens ferry that leaves from Ballinskelligs pier. They went out of their way to make sure we had an enjoyable day, taking us all the way around Sceilig Bheag on the way there and around the back of Sceilig Mhichíl on the way back, showing us all the little coves and pointing out interesting things in the landscape that I would not have noticed otherwise. They are very knowledgeable about the area and particularly the sea conditions - I felt I was in very safe hands with them. If you can get a spot on their boat, I would highly recommend doing that! Even enjoyed a coffee and the chats with Brendan in the local Cafe Cois Trá afterwards.

Of everything we did over our 11 days in Ireland, the Skellig Michael Landing Tour is in the Top 3 FOR SURE. The entire experience from the boat ride, to the bird covered island, to climbing the steps to the monastery, everything was magical. The trip up the steps, WITH BREAKS, is maybe only 25 min so almost all physical levels can do the climb. The boats give you PLENTY of time to climb the steps, wander around and explore at the top, and come back down - so there is NO NEED to rush. All skill levels can make the climb, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Highly recommend the landing tour.
TIP - get very clear directions on where to meet. There are lots of boating companies going to the same place and on the same day so it was a bit confusing getting started.
