This spot in Killarney is a journey back in time. The ruins show a world where scholars and monks were once hosted and you can feel the history as you walk the grounds. Only accessible by boat, this island still has the shell of several buildings intact and was the first university in Europe. There is a walking trail around the island that was the most peaceful and tranquil experience of my whole visit to Ireland; complete with a herd of deer grazing in a meadow. It was quite muddy in spring so I wish I had worn hiking boots and not sneakers, but this is a WONDFUL spot to visit and worth the meager $15 boat ride.

Took the boat ride over from Ross Castle, which was a great activity in and of itself. The island is so quiet and peaceful. I loved being there. There are trails around the perimeter that we explored a little bit, but didn't want to wander too far and miss our boat back. The ruins themselves are interesting to look at and my daughters had fun walking through and climbing around them. It was especially nice that it was not crowded - we were there with literally one other family of 4, so you really have an intimate experience to explore and reflect.

This peaceful island was at various times an ancient college and a religious community. It is now abandoned with only the deer living here. It's very peaceful with an air of mystery. It can only be reached by boat. Some picnic here, but remember to take your trash with you. There are no food stands or restrooms.

A spectacular place, a must visit! We left from Reen Pier and the whole experience was amazing. If you want to get away from the crowds, I couldn't recommend Innisfallen Island enough. The history and the scenery are just amazing!

Fantastic Abby ruins and and island full of wild deer. Make for the perfect stop. The island educated many of the early Irish Elites and is the true center of Killarney. As it is the lake of learning. We where enrought over by boat on our way up to Lord Brandon’s Cottage. Truly worth the trip over

Fergus (boatman) and his brother donal at the pier at Ross castle added enjoyment to the short trip and we were gifted with spotting some gentle deer while wandering around the very special Inisfallen Island. The short boat trip was lovely.

Walking around this ruin, we could understand why it is a popular tourist attraction. There's the opportunity to take a boat on the water, which we didn't take advantage of, but we thought it would be popular during warmer weather.

I drove around the Lough Leane to Ross castle and a pier on the lake where I met Fergus who had a boat that could take me to the island in the middle with ruins of a famous monastery there. Fergus and I discussed a huge range of subjects and like so many Irishmen i have met responded with friendliness to friendliness given.
I was dropped on the island and Fergus said because it was so early and i had paid for a solo passage, he would wait for me. He pulled out the paper and laid back and i thought that is not a bad life.
There was an Augustinian Priory, a Romanesque church and a small oratory on a hill in the woods. The island was heavily forested and I was by myself again wonderfully quiet and scenic. It was here that the monks wrote the “Annals of Innisfallen” - an account of the history of Ireland between 950 and 1350 and now kept at the Bodleian Library in Oxford.
The boat journey across the Lough, the company of Fergus and the search for the ruins on the island was one of my most enjoyable interludes in Ireland.

Is there a boat that could take a youth club (11 members) onto Innisfallen island?
Skrevet 28. mai 2018
Will the 1 hour tour be running at the beginning of October (5th or 6th)?
Skrevet 13. april 2018
How often does the boat go fro Ross Castle to the island? It is impossible to find a timetable online! We are not interested in the lakes tour - only getting to/from Innisfallen island.
Skrevet 20. juni 2015
I have found out the answer myself now - there is no set timetable. Generally runs between 9 or 9:30 and 5. If there is a boat and skipper there at the dock, they will take you to the island (10 Euro per person; takes ten minutes in a small open motor-boat. They provide and required use of life jackets). If it is busy, they will go back and forth, and you can take any return boat with space. If it is not busy (like when we were there, on a nice Sunday morning in June), the skipper will wait at the island for you for 30 minutes - enough to take a decent look at the building ruins, but not to spend time for a picnic or such.
