Nice place to visit in limerick. 5 euros a person to enter. We had a nice conversation with the lady selling the tickets. Gave us some insight of the church. The church is beautiful. Some nice statues and a beautiful organ. It is nice to see that services still go on every morning. It was fun to walk around. There is no parking per service you just park wherever you can on the street and walk there.

What a beautiful cathedral. It has a most amazing history, which is preserved and shared by the custodians of rhus beautiful place of worship. We were lucky enough to arrive just before a guided tour and tagged along, and boy, am I glad we did. The pamphlet provided for the self guided tour is very informative and easy to follow, but you can not beat a human interaction. Our tour guide was engaging, funny, and so knowledgeable on the history of St Mary's. We planned a quick 20-minute visit, but we easily spent over an hour here, and time just flew by. The graveyard is worth a visit, too. It's beautifully kept and has lots of informative signs placed around so you can learn more of the history.

This church is conveniently close to the city centre and it’s actually the best preserved Irish church built on a Continental scale before the Norman invasion of 1169.
It’s a complex building, incorporating developments from the mid-twelfth century to the present. It is a really interesting sightseeing spot and definitely impressive and worth a visit!

Historical cathedrals have often been quoted as being over or almost a thousand years old, and so they are if one were to start from where the original was built, but subsequently rebuilt or modified. Here we have a cathedral over a thousand years of age, which existed long before any other building still standing in Limerick, and still in its original glory. This makes its architecture even all the more stunning and admirable.
Within, there are also excellent pieces of furnishings which date back hundreds of years, all of which are very clearly described for the visitor.
An absolute must visit, whether staying in Limerick or just passing through. This place has an exceptional existent history.

It is not easy to find an open religious building in these parts. And as I have already stated elsewhere, the thing in itself is not even that bad: in this case too it is a place of worship that cannot predict God knows what tourist opening hours.
But in this case the openings are rather rarefied: the Church of Ireland (i.e. the Anglican Church of Ireland) must not enjoy extraordinary health, all things considered. In this case we are talking about a splendid 12th century artefact (therefore not a - albeit well executed - neo-Gothic artefact), surrounded by characteristic burials (from various eras) with Celtic crosses of various shapes.
It was learned at the nearby King John's Castle that the building was part of the medieval city and was essentially a religious extension of the "government" quarter.
Too bad we didn't see it inside, but it's definitely a very nice building even from the outside!
It's a shame to have found - under a portico corresponding to the south-eastern part of the Church (i.e. the one most affected by the burials) - a drug addict intent on his "maintenance" operations: a sign of poor supervision, as well as the alarming figure of social degradation citizen (we have also observed this elsewhere!).

This may be the best church / religious building in Limerick. Loads of history inside and out. Awesome stained glass and art on the inside. Bells ring every hour and sometimes are spectacular. Entry fee of €5 when I visited.

This is a very well preserved, active Medieval Cathedral.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
The stained glass windows were gorgeous!

The cathedral of Santa Maria offers magnificently sculpted 15th century works featuring demonic beasts. It's worth a quick visit, the construction is also impressive.

I generally feel that if you've seen one cathedral, you've seen them all. Saint Mary's was a pleasant exception. The displays were well done, more museum than cathedral, and there were many interesting memorials on the wall. Well worth the time and small price.

It is beautiful and is in a beautiful environment, you can see that it is very well cared for. We are left wanting to see it inside, since we found it closed...

Are there guided tours of this cathedral or headsets to wear while touring?
Skrevet 5. mars 2017
No.unfortunately. Such facilities are not available. The building is beautiful, but all locals will attest that it was much nicer and more atmospheric prior to the 1970s renovations and so-called modernisation. Since then, the walls internal walls are devoid of plaster and colour, which is unusual for Catholic Churches.

I am staying at the oak wood arms and I
would like to know as to how far St.Mary's Cathedral and King John's Castle is from my hotel.
