It’s in the middle of cathedral square and is an impressive late medieval parish church dating from 1407. Built of materials from its predecessor Norman church as well as the nave from the chapel dedicated to St. Thomas A Becket from the abbey (later to become the cathedral) as well as timber brought from Milton Park. Its bells were sounded twice in the sixteenth century for the funerals of Katherine of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots both of whom are buried in the cathedral. During the Commonwealth it narrowly escaped demolition to provide materials for the repair of the cathedral. Today it is again under repair and perhaps for the first time in its long history lacks a permanent Vicar.

St John the Baptist Church is situated in Cathedral Square and is only a few minutes walk away from Peterborough Cathedral. You might think, why have two such impressive religious buildings in very close proximity - the answer is that he cathedral was for the monks and the church for the townspeople!. The original church was almost entirely demolished in the 1819 rebuild but what we have now is a fine building which includes a very fine south porch, 15th century font, 20th century screens and some excellent stained glass. On entry we were welcomed by the volunteers - there was hand sanitizer available and they were only to happy to point out certain features of interest that brought the church to life.

I have walked past this church many times but never called in. I had some time in my hands so took the opportunity to see in. A good example of perpendicular architecture and sculpted wood roof. Several interesting stained glass windows, some quite new. While I was there, there was an exhibition of photographs from the local photographic society. Really enjoyed it. There is a small café open from 10-12, not open when I visited.

Close to the cathedral, this is an interesting church and worth visiting for its stained glass windows and church architecture. There is a coffee shop and coffee mornings seem popular. Worth visiting.

Exactly. We approached the door, went in and were amazed at its size. Very impressive stained glass windows. It is not used as a practising church now but is still looked after and impressive. If you like old architecture this is well worth a visit.

It is situated in Cathedral square and across from the imposing Peterborough Cathedral. Along with the Guildhall structure it makes for a beautiful sight.
There was a pop up cafe inside when we went on a Tuesday and the church is serene and beautiful on the inside.
Worth popping inside if you are passing by.

Nearby Peterborough’s grand Cathedral, this parish church is nice to look at from the outside. Once you’ve seen the Cathedral - you can’t quite compare the two! - there’s the opportunity to visit this, by comparison, quaint town church. Appears community focused.

This very nice church is in the main square in the centre of Peterborough, dwarfed by the huge cathedral a short distance away.
As well as a gift shop they also have a decent coffee shop.

This was our first visit inside this church and were immediately taken aback by the stunning interior with its historic font, large organ for the size of the church, plaque to Sir Malcolm Sargent (conductor) who was a chorister here and also learned to play the organ here. The grave yard although wild in nature is full of surprises. The church is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust - what a job they have done.
