BEST Jane Austen tour you can take

My daughter and I spent the day with Phil exploring the landscapes that helped shape the character and work of Jane Austen. We had excellent conversations about her life, her neighbors and contemporaries, as well as the longevity of her work and the impact of her legacy. We visited Basingstoke, the village of Stevenson, several country estates, and ended at Chawton. It was a suburb day! Easily booked and clear instructions for how to find Phil. If you love Jane—this is THE best and most authentic tour you can take.

An Amazing Day

I cannot rave enough about this tour! Phil was so energetic and knowledgeable that even the 2 members of our family who are not huge Jane Austen fans had an absolutely wonderful time. As for my 16 year old Jane Austen fanatic, she declared it her favorite vacation activity that she's ever done (and we've traveled extensively). If you want to learn little known facts about Jane Austen, see quaint villages that are part of her history, and have wonderful conversation while doing it, this tour is for you!

If you desire a true insider’s knowledge of virtually every twist and turn in the Hampshire towns walked by Jane Austen, every hill and dale in the countryside ever trod by Jane (if you do not know which Jane I speak of, this tour may not be for you, but read on), and every nook and cranny of the churches in which she worshipped in Hampshire, Hidden Britain Tour’s in the comfortable conveyance of an automobile (not with a troupe of travelers on a bus tour), then Phil Howe is your man of Austen. Follow the Austen Hampshire trail as meticulously detailed in the Claire Tomalin book on Austen. Phil is equally meticulous and is most covetous of the convenience and comfort of his guests, beginning with his avowed willingness to traipse across the county in search of us when it became apparent the train would be waylaid outside Basingstoke—fortunately, we evaded that difficulty with the prescience to take an alternate form of transport down from London. Phil’s knowledge of the backroads of Hampshire is invaluable and time-saving. You can travel to the many locations a good deal faster than Jane could in her day regardless of the transportation mode you choose. Phil navigates you through intricate but charming winding lanes to vital Austen spots on this tour with aplomb, facts, and efficiency. You might be able to find some of those locations on your own but not without the inevitable time-consuming, back-tracking, gawking about, and map fumbling required to ascertain if you are in the right place and have the right context. You can just put all that in the competent hands of Phil and not have to worry about getting stranded in a sheep pasture. Not only is he an experienced Hampshire guide, he has a literary, arts and drama background and wrote the play, Twelve Hours, that has been performed in a church Jane knew (he will give you all the details) about Jane’s fateful night at Manydown after her marriage proposal from the brother of her good friends, the Bigg-Wither women. Along the way, he provides sumptuous tidbits of information, intimate knowledge of his subject matter, and a perspective that only someone steeped in history and Austen, with long-term residence in Hampshire, can bring from Basingstoke to Alton, from Steventon to Ashe and Deane, the neighborhoods and environs of Austen’s Hampshire life come to life. He will make sure you enjoy a charming village lunch in Chawton where the last stop of the day is Jane Austen’s House. wonderful tour!

We had such a great time! Phil was very friendly and informative, and had lots of great stories! He took us to a lot of really interesting places that we never would’ve been able to find on our own. Side bonus is that it’s a wonderful glimpse into the English countryside. Would recommend to anyone who likes Jane Austen! We all learned so much, and left the tour with a greater appreciation for not only Jane Austen, but the entire Austen family.

Extremely informative tour of Jane Austen territory

I went on this tour with Phil in 2022 and I highly recommend it. He was extremely informed on Jane Austen and more than happy to answer all my questions. He brought me to all of the fascinating Jane Austen sites and explained about them in detail, allowing ample time in each spot. This is an absolute MUST for Jane Austen fans!

Terrific deep dive into Jane Austen's world

As a foreigner, I don’t think I could’ve seen Hampshire and its Jane Austen sites any other way than through a tour like this. Most of the Austen sites are not touristy in the slightest, like the site of her childhood home (which no longer stands) and her father’s chapel in Steventon. So it was invaluable to have a guide who lives and works in the area (and knows how to drive on those narrow country roads!) to help us understand the significance of what we were looking at.

Phil was a wealth of information about all sorts of topics: the geology of this part of England, chapel “graffiti,” general British history and culture, things that Austen would have understood in her time. This really enriched the experience. Phil recommended reading the book, “Jane Austen: A Life” by Claire Tomalin before going on the tour, and I would also recommend doing so, for the same purpose.

This was the first tour we did after arriving in England. Thank you, Phil, for the wonderful introduction to the country!

Jane Austen's Dancing Years: I came back a second time

This was my second time taking this personal tour of Jane Austen's birthplace - the first was 10 years ago - and I recommend taking it a second time (as well as a first). We did the full-day tour; new locations were added, and additional research by Phil made it even more updated and in-depth. The tour ended at Jane Austen's cottage in Chawton, with a trip to the larger Chawton House nearby.

Always personable, knowledgeable, and friendly, Phil's insights into Regency (and earlier) Hampshire county were as educational as they were entertaining. You don't have to be a Jane Austen expert to enjoy the history and gossip surrounding the life she lived in this lovely area of England.

A wonderful tour

The Jane Austen tour was a "special" birthday present for my wife. We went with my two daughters. Absolutely brilliant. Phil is not only extremely knowledgeable but also really excellent company. Jane Austen is my wife's favourite author and it was wonderful seeing and learning about the places where she spent the early years of her life. I also never realised Hampshire is such a beautiful county.

A Wonderful Way to Spend a Day out of London!

Wish there was an extra Gold Star to give to this tour. We cannot recommend it highly enough! Not only did Phil bring Jane Austen to life for us, he gave us a day immersed in the English countryside past and present! Travelling around Hampshire with Phil was like visiting with an old friend. Within minutes we were laughing and learning, sharing stories, and exploring any question that came to mind. Cap it off with the best meal of our entire week at a local Free House and I cannot wait to join Phil again.

Highly recommend this tour, it's a must see!

We had an absolute delight spending the day with Phil, and learning not only all about Jane Austen but also about the detailed structure of English villages and their complex social history. It was such a  fun day,  and Phil was both informative and led conversations with ease. For the rest of our trip in Great Britain we were able to reference a lot of what he discussed with us,  and he gave some great details for other tours we would be doing later on.

This tour would be interesting to everyone,  even those that are not huge Jane Austen fans. Driving around these small and hidden country roads would not be easy as a tourist;  not to mention,  one wouldn't even know what to look for!   However,  with a regional expert like Phil it's something anyone can experience. We highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in Jane Austen and historical aspects to English villages
