Heaton Park in Manchester is a beautiful and historic green space that my girlfriend and I recently had the pleasure of visiting. As we strolled through the grounds, we couldn't help but crack a few jokes about the park's rich history. For instance, I quipped: "I heard that Heaton Park used to be a palace for the aristocracy. But now it's just a pigsty – literally!"

That's because my girlfriend had decided to dress up as a pig for our outing. She pranced around the park, snuffling and oinking like a pro, while I tried to track her down. It was like a scene out of "Babe: The Gallant Pig" (or maybe more like "Babe: The Mischievous Girlfriend").

As we played our silly little game, I couldn't help but think of a pig-related joke. I said: "You know, that pig who escaped the slaughterhouse and became prime minister was actually a huge improvement over the last bunch. At least he was a real pork-barrel politician."

In the end, I finally found my porcine girlfriend hiding behind a tree, snorting with laughter. It was a hilarious and memorable experience that I'll never forget.

In addition to the piggy fun, Heaton Park also has a wide range of other attractions, including a boating lake, a golf course, and a café. It's a great place to spend a sunny afternoon and I highly recommend it. Just beware of any rogue pigs that might be lurking around – you never know what mischief they'll get up to.

My first year at Lightopia, and my family and I thought it was commerciazed and tacky. The lights were nice, but these were interspersed with fairground rides pelting out pop music, which destroyed whatever ambience the lights managed to create. The worst bit was the music on the light trail, which consisted of awful, saccharine pop songs - rather than, say, some good old Christmas classics. The whole thing seemed like it was designed to cater to an 8-10 year-old girl with a penchant for schmaltzy pop songs, Instagram, and anime. What anyone else was meant to get out of it is anyone's guess. The event seems designed, moreover, to gouge wallets - in addition to the hefty ticket price, being charged £6 for a candy floss is a joke.

We went to Lightopia at Heaton park last year and love it but 2022 was a ripoff and won’t be going next year. We were charged £120 for 4 adults and 2 children plus £7 parking per car. Parking after 7pm was free last year but so expensive this year.

The lake light show was 5 mins and my sister from Toronto who was so excited to see it but was disappointed because it was much longer the prior year. The organisers must improve it to attract us to return in the future. We love Heaton park and will continue to go every few months.

Always love Heaton Park ever since a child

But Lighopedia is a complete rip off
Three adults plus parking £71
Some individual good displays and a nice lights show on the lake.
But cost per enjoyment APPALLING all the tides are extra
Did enjoy the hot chocolates much needed in the cold and wet small cabin just pasted the lake the young man was very pleasant and efficient.
The car park staff were seriously un equipped for the weather and they we’re trying to give directions with black gloves hands, the only glow wand was tucked into a belt so we could not the young-man’s hand directions in the dark of the car park.
The organisers idea of of staff health and safety is apparently none existent. Really felt sorry for the staff from the event organisers which looked even worst when the the park security team were about fully kitted out with health and safety visibility gear.

We love creating experiences for our children at Christmas, it's important to us that we create lovely memories through shared experiences so I was really looking forward to this, however at £69 for a family of 4 ticket+ £5 parking (£74) - the parking was the only thing worth paying for. We also paid for our eldest at 18, her boyfriend and his younger sister with parking at a further £64.50, therefore before we'd entered the park we'd spent £138.50. As you can imagine for that money near Christmas, expectations were high, reviews on the Lightopia website all state it is a magical and wonderful experience before Christmas. We entered the park and immediately hit the food court, with burgers starting at £8 a pop, we decided not to eat and walk round first. Before you enter there is a little hut where you can purchase light up swords and light up swirly toys, as it was a Christmas treat we decided to purchase one each for the children (a further £24 spent at £8 each, but you could get some smaller ones at £5 each) The lights were rudimentary, random animal statues with no build up to why they were there or no flow, you walk past a lit up deer followed by lit up pandas, no real understanding of a story. We got to a light up tunnel (the one that is used on all the marketing images) where people were understandably wanting to take selfies, but it was causing a back log, so while we were fortunate to walk through it, just as we got to the end it got switched off. Made it to a small funfair - rides £5 a person, so again decided to walk on and see what else there was to offer. The phoenix was quite nice but again just randomly placed. The walk leads you to lit up mushrooms and an enchanted forest walk, which to be fair was quite nice, it was just a shame it wasn't like this all the way round. Before you get to the lake there is an opportunity to go on an old-fashioned tram, again at a cost. The light show over the lake was quite nice and we decided to get ourselves and the kids a hot chocolate - just under £30 for 7 hot chocolates. Made our way back up to the top of the hill, again just random lights and random lit up statues. There was a tree where the children could hit a drum and it sent light waves in time to the beat but due to the queue of children wanting to have a go it was literally one tap of the drum and move on. When we got the top, two of the children wanted to go on the large Ferris wheel. Another £10. So all in all,our experience of Lightopia cost us just over £200. You can take a family of 5 to Gulliver's World to spend the whole day going on rides and meet Father Christmas for less! Really, really disappointing - even if we'd not spent anything in the park it's still just under £140 for a completely forgettable be experience. The lights on the houses near the park provided a better display. I really would save your money and do something else. We went to TGIs in Prestwich afterwards and fed all 7 of us, with drinks, starters, mains and desserts for less than what it cost us to enter Lightopia, we had a nicer time there as well 🙁 Please don't waste your money!

We went on Christmas Eve 2022. When we went in 2020 it was truly magical and very enjoyable so we were excited to go again. Unfortunately, we were left very disappointed.

Lightopia was originally pitched as a magical, artistic Christmas experience and the first time that’s what it was.

This time they couldn’t decide whether it was that or a money grubbing fairground. There were massive fairground rides wanting extra money every 2 minutes and blaring out rubbish music that drowned out the music that was supposed to be part of the experience.

The staff were all grumpy, especially the food sellers. They hadn’t ven bothered to dry off the tables and chairs yet they were charging exorbitant amounts for basic food.

The sculptures all seemed recycled from previous years and were tatty. There seemed to be no theme to it this time.

We made the most of it but we wouldn’t go again. If they want to put on a funfair make it free entry and if they want to make it an exhibition, get rid of the funfair rides.

I was not looking forward to this event because of some of the prevous reviews
I am so glad I ignored them because we loved it
I went with my Niece and her Daughter and her Daughters friend .
Ages from 15 to 72 .
I dont know why these negative people had posted bad reviews it was very Christmasy .
There would have been a lot of hard work gone into this event which the Public dont see . I think the people who gave bad reviews dont have the spirit of Christmas inside them Ba Hum bug
There was plenty to see and the light show over the lake was amazing .
The only thing I would complain about was not enough information on which entrance to use .
We parked at Sainsbury heaton park and went in that way to the park .
But on coming to the end of our walk and returning back to the place we entered
we found all the gates locked so we walked down to the next gate a good 15 min walk to find these gates were also locked !!!
There were no attendants to ask where the exit was so we walked around for an extra 30 min to find the exit which was on Sheepfoot lane complete oppisite end of the park entrance we had come in at.
We did see a purple jacket attendant but when we tried to ask him where the exit was he just shrugged and carried on using his phone so ignorant .
At last we found the entrance near to the car park and more attendants here than anywhere else in the park ?
The event should be more organised and if the front gates are to be locked at a certain time then this should be displayed on the front gates so no one will go in that way as we did . And then find that they cant get out that way on return .
A poster with arrows showing entrance and exit would be good .
But over all the event was good and I would recomend to anyone with young children it is magic

Lightopia event absolutely dreadful. Really tatty fabric structures with lights inside dotted between rubbish fairground rides. Nothing festive about it. The kids commented it looked like it had been dragged out of a shed - it did!

Overpriced food with grumpy staff - maybe because they realise how rubbish the whole thing is!

Complete rip off but if you have tickets I would cut your losses and do something else with the time instead. We were so disappointed - we could have done something so much better with our family evening together.

Third year attending, this year they placed fair ground rides where lights should have been, no grand entrance, no big displays.
Small section through the tree's was the best part. But came away disappointed, more places to buy a drink, go on a ride or buy a donut than lights. Last two years there over 2 hours each time. This year done in an hour, including a queue to get in.

Attended the lighttopia event. It was rubbish! Nothing to see just some worn down lights scattered around. Over priced fair ground rides £10 for a 5 minute go around the Ferris wheel! £4 for a watered down hot chocolate.
Light show over the lake was crap.
Won’t attend again
