Hamish is a total scam. The wine tour is nice but DO NOT fall for his wine investment program. It is a scam and you will never see your money or wine again. Buyer beware! I wish someone had written a review like this before we bought into the scam.

Great day out around the Bordeaux right bank regions. Excellent tour recommended and put together by Hamish, a perfect mix of old school, traditional chateaux including Chateau de la Rivière in Fronsac, which is utterly charming - the cellar tour is very special, worth going for that alone, then Chateau de Salles - a lovely old style chateau in Pomerol finishing with Ch. de la Gaffeliere in St Emilion which has a tank room to die for! Great lunch spot suggestion too, Hamish knows exactly where to go, what to do and how to do it around the Bordeaux region, I can’t recommend him enough.

Following an enjoyable few days with Hamish for my 50th birthday 3 of us invested 10,000 pounds each in Hamish’s Bordeaux wine fund. We were given a list of some great wines purchased for our "portfolios". For the last 3 years I have been asking Hamish to sell the wine and return the proceeds. We’ve got nothing and rarely get a response from Hamish other than saying he’ll get back to us. I’m pretty sure there never was any wine purchased and that our money was smoked in quick fashion. Hamish runs a decent tour but do not invest with him. We are heartbroken and walletbroken and are now considering legal avenues to pursue Hamish.

From start to finish, Hamish knew how to deliver the special touches. He was incredibly responsive to my initial enquiry - particularly when I explained that my knowledge of wine was shockingly poor and that it was a gift for my husband's birthday. After a quick delve into the wine cupboard and a few photos of my husband's stored/laid-down wine; Hamish began to develop an initial outline itinerary for me to review. From there, we built a bespoke trip that visited some of my husband's favourite vineyards and a few of the more quirky producers.
We stayed at the recommendation of Hamish at Chateau de la Reviere for the whole tour, rather than bounce from hotel to hotel over the 4 days we were in Bordeaux. Another review is needed to explain the delights of this place and the wonderful housekeeper (castlekeeper?), Nathalie.
From the start, it was apparent that Hamish was well liked by many of the producers, who knew him personally and had great respect for him. That in itself was a blessing - particularly, as our trip was just before the closure of France due to Covid-19.
On our first day, we began with a tour of Chateau de la Reviere and it's incredible 7kms of underground wine cellar that had been kept safe, through some cunning mirage from the Nazi's during WWII. Hamish's knowledge of the wine and the cellars was impeccable - the detail comes from the passion he has for the castle and the family. We popped over to Pomerol to visit Chateau Clinet and marvel at the über hi-tech vats and tour the cellars. Slightly mind-blowing that each vat was sized to take the grapes from a specific plot. I'd also recommend the Gelee de Merlot (jam created as a byproduct of the process); admittedly at €9 for 100g, it's a tad pricey but on toast, it's beyond delicious. Our final stop (after a delicious lunch at a local tavern), in St Emilion was Chateau Canon La Gaffelière.
Day two was also magnificent, with visits to Chateau Haut-Brion, Chateau Y'Quem - an extraordinary experience, precise and almost too clinical, and Domaine De Chevalier.
Finally, having got very used to our first drink at 10am, our last day was by far the most fabulous. A highlight of the trip, was meeting Daisy at Chateau Angludet, tasting the pure grape varieties and then the 2012 and 2013 to understand the blending process and the importance of balancing the grape flavours. We talked horses, wine and family and it felt like we were her most prestigious visitors of the day. A total delight and if you can get to visit, an absolute must. We popped over to meet Michel who's a small producer; creating wine in a very different way at Chateau Hourtin Decasse - an eccentric and passionate man, who's also created a 'gin' of sorts as a byproduct of his wine making.
The final tour was Chateau Lafite-Rothchild - we couldn't have finished in any other way. We were the last private visit before the doors shut for covid-19 and we spent several hours with one of the private sommelier's to the family, Nicolas, exploring the history and extensive cellars with wine that was bottled in the late 1800s. We were treated to a very generous pour, long chat and refill of 2006. A complete treat.
Throughout the trip, we were ferried and chauffeured by Hamish to delightfully French taverns and eateries - all the patrons knew him and would often spend time at our table, welcoming us and joking about Hamish's foibles with fondness. It made the trip even more personal, as it felt like we were being welcomed into his extended French family.
Everyone we met, or detoured to have a look at their vineyards, was very magnanimous with their time. This was down to the relationship Hamish has with the owners and producers - his knowledge, love and passion, absolutely enhanced and enlivened the trip.
I simply couldn't recommend Hamish and Bella Wine Tours enough; you would be mad to book with any other company.

What an excellent experience... and lots of fun, too.
Hamish Wakes-Miller is one of a kind - in a fantastic way. Unbelievably knowledgeable in wine and local history. Great conversation across all subjects!!
Spent 2 days together “being introduced to Bordeaux”. He structured and paced out visit perfectly - tremendous variety of Chateaux visits, without being overwhelming, balanced with some other tastings and visits to perfectly round out our trip. Highly recommend Hamish / Bella Wine Tours for any French Region wine visits - his knowledge and network will open doors and appeal to anyone from us (novices), to true connoisseurs.
Thank you for a memorable visit to Bordeaux, Hamish!! .. and great to get to know you a killer. Hope we have the opportunity to do it again.

If you want a personal, knowledge-filled, wine-induced rockin good time in Bordeaux then go no further than to book a spot with Hammish. He's hilarious, knows more about wine and Bordeaux than most Master Somm's ... he's got connection s and access to the best chateaus in the world ... but most of all he's a great guy (and so much fun to be around!) Btw this is a solo tour so don't expect big groups which is the best way to take a tour!

This is the second time we have taken tours with Hamish since the last time it was only two days long. If you are the kind of person who enjoys wine, beautiful architecture, gastronomy, history, and great company with a négociant (wine merchant) you should look no further. We were very impressed by how EVERYBODY knows Hamish and the kind of access he gets for his customers, not to mention the kind of excellent personal relations he has with all of the chateaux owners.

But the wine Chateau la Grave near Badens smells of acétone and rotten eggs... to avoid

That is great. We can definitely quote for this. I would suggest one day in the Medoc, One day in Saint Emilion/Pomerol and One Day in the Graves/Sauternes area. This would cover most of the key area. We can make appointments at some of the best quality Chateaux in each area, to offer you a diverse and interesting view of Bordeaux. During your time in Bordeaux we also explain the history of the area, the soils, the terroir, the microclimate, the people and the wines. We are also wine traders (negociants) so we can source wines and give buying advice. What is your email address?

Many thanks for your contact. We have individual and group tours running all the time in Bordeaux, however we are already fully booked between 23 Oct- Nov 1st. Do you have alternative dates?
Hello, I am looking to visit Bordeaux in November for his birthday and was wandering if this is a ok time of year to go for wine tastings as I've looked online and they don't seem to go past October. Is there a reason for this or am I booking to early?
Thank you

Hi, Yes November can be a good time to visit Bordeaux. It is a quieter time in the area, after the harvest and the busy summer season. But the colours in the vineyard and often the climate can be delightful. Please email me and I can send you further information for what we can offer. Cheers

Hi! Is it true that we should avoid visiting Bordeaux in the month of August? Would September/October be a better time? Thanks so much!
hamishwm
Bordeaux, Frankrike64 bidrag
It is true that August can be quite tricky for organising visits to the very top Chateaux, as many are closed for the French holiday season and they are preparing for the harvest. But there are still plenty of excellent Chateaux that are open for receiving visitors and we can plan excellent trips during August.
But there is always high demand for the First Growth Chateaux throughout the year, so best to plan in advance!
