I still do not know whether it was worth the trip to get here. We arranged a taxi from Pingyao (650 RMB, whole day, including a visit to Lijiashan). Qikou scenic area is just a few streets. It looked like recently renovated. I imagine Pingyao was like this 10 years ago. One can easily walk to the temple on the top of the hill, overlooking the Yellow River.
For those interested our schedule: we left Pingyao at 07:00 AM. Arrived at 10:15 at Qikou. Took plenty of time to walk around and have lunch. Arrived at 13:00 at Lijiashan (all the way by car). As this is a small area as well, we had plenty of time to walk around. Left at 15:00 PM, arriving 18:00 back in Pingyao.

The ancient Chinese merchant mountain-town of Qikouis is on the banks of the Yellow River, in Lin County, Shanxi Province. Although this ancient town is close to 1,000 years old, it only started to attract tourists in 2010, and this was due to an initiative of the local government to attract tourism. The history of Shanxi province goes back 4,000 or more years. It is said that Shanxi is the cradle of Chinese civilization. Emperor Yan is believed to have lived in southwestern Shanxi in approximately the 25th century BC. As proof of its significant history, Shanxi has 35,000 relic sites and growing as more and more continue to be discovered.
There were a few artists (photos attached) in one area of the town. We bought two paintings at 120rmb each.
The Yellow River Rock murals (photos attached) outside the village of QiKouzhen. Rock erosion over the years has created a form of beautiful “modern art”. Although the nature-made murals were nice to look at, I wouldn't recommend the trip out to see them. For most, looking at photos should suffice. The return trip cost us 250rmb.
Similar to most smaller town people in China, the local inhabitants were very friendly and helpful.
Although there are some western toilets, you may find it a challenge using Chinese-style squat toilets. Usually, the floors are dirty-wet, so roll up your pant legs before squatting. Make sure you have a good supply of tissue on hand at all times.

We went to this area on a day trip from Pingyao arranged by our guesthouse. Before we left we were told that it takes about 2 hours by car, but in reality it took 3 hours,so there and back 6 hours, which is really a bit to much at the time. But thinking back on it, this was one of the highlights. We had lunch with an organic farm family where time stood still and just wondered around the mountainside and date tree plantations. Fascinating to see how people lived in caves. Beautiful landscape with a backdrop of the yellow river. A great escape from the busy streets of Chinese city's.

A great place to visit before tourism really takes off . This used to be a main Port Town almost 100 years ago . The town is becoming popular but it has a lot of charm and remnants of a time when life was more simple . The dwellings and other facilities around this area are bountiful and the place has a vibrancy with a lot of the people here very polite and always smiling . The scenery with Yellow River and the Mountains as a background is magnificent .This is a place to visit within the next few years before it becomes over developed and over crowded with tourists . A must do to see how people have lived here for centuries .

Great if your a hipster and want some random country pics for instagram but otherwise too much effort for very little reward. Now there is a 100RMB charge for entering the city.

Good base for seeing the locality. With mountain villages and boat trips. The village itself is interesting but limited in content. Hotel accommodation was clean, Western toilets and great views of Yellow River.
