PROS
* Historical location of the notorious Bastille prison
* Tall monument with statue on top
* One can go under it to a crypt

CONS
* Located in the middle of a large traffic circle
* Congested and bust area
* Difficult to access approaching the monument and impossible to go inside

"I VISTED THIS PLACE"...
... at 0530h because the metro train that I was using arrived at this station. So I jumped off to admire for a moment and from a distance the monument and the statue on top- the golden fleet footed racing and running symbol of liberty.

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Yes

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Maybe, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there

ADVICE
* Be sure to see it if you are in the area
* Be careful crossing the dangerous traffic if you want to go tothe base of the monument
* Consider a tour under it to its crypts

Visit lasting almost 1 hour 45 minutes… with only maybe 20 minutes left in the column. The rest is a tour of the neighborhood, which does not add much to the visit, and is especially not indicated when you buy the ticket. Guide not very accessible, who clearly does not like to communicate his knowledge, it's disappointing.. come for the last 30 minutes directly to the status that will be enough..

This big column is in the center of the Place, and it all is in the place of the old Bastille prison that was torn down dramatically during at the start of the Revolution. Now the area is famous for the new opera house and the demonstrations that happen here. I like the many budget restaurants and the lively activities. The column itself is just in the middle of traffic.

The column located in the center of Bastille Square is called the July Column in memory of the revolution of July 1830 which led to the fall of King Charles A bronze column of approximately 50 meters rises above a white marble base. At the top of the column there is a balcony with a golden globe in the center on which there is a winged figure, also golden, which rests on a single foot, a work by the sculptor Auguste Duumont. The statue represents the "spirit of freedom".

Raised on the Place de la Bastille between 1835 and 1840 in commemoration of the 3 Glorieuses. After work, it can be visited again with a maximum of 18 people given the cramped conditions of the premises. In the crypt are the vaults of the victims of the clashes of July 1830; as well as those who fell in 1848. On one side: place where rest the bodies of French citizens who armed themselves and fought for the defense of public liberties in 1830 (504 people).
On the other side: the bodies of French citizens who fell for the establishment of a democratic and social republic in February 1848 (916 people). Surprisingly, we also read there, by mistake, Egyptian mummies brought back by Napoleon Bonaparte… they are still there!!! . Dominating the Place de la Bastille with its 50 m height (52 with the Genius of Liberty), it is the tallest tombstone in Paris. Before its construction, there was first "the Fountain of Regeneration"; then under the Empire an elephant (plaster model) which quickly fell into ruin. It’s a real ossuary!!! Superb bronze helical staircase leading to the summit, inaccessible to the public for security reasons. Impossible to adapt it to safety standards. Big waterproofing problem. During our visit to the foot of this staircase, it was raining a lot. Its foundations span the St Martin canal which can be seen through small windows. As a result, there is permanent humidity in the crypt. Very interesting visit with an excellent speaker. Too bad, terrible weather, flood +++ from the courtyard of the Sully Hotel where. Yes we had an appointment.

This is a monument in the center of Place de la Bastille. It was built to commemorate the July 1830 Revolution, but Place de la Bastille was originally the place where the French Revolution began in 1789. Why was this monument built in such a place? The tower itself is a pale green pillar with a golden angel statue on top, and it is very striking.

As a big fan of Paris' many revolutions, it was a true pleasure to be able to pay homage to the brave Parisians who died to liberate France from the rule of kings Charles X (in 1830) and Louis-Philippe (in 1848).

As advertised on the website, be aware that you can book a visit of the *crypt under the column* where the revolutionaries are buried, *not* of the column shaft itself. While you do see the spiral staircase from below at the end of the visit, you are not allowed to climb it due to safety reasons. If what you're looking for is an original view of the Paris skyline, you will be disappointed, so I would recommend booking a visit of the Tour Saint-Jacques instead.

I still think the July Column is worth a visit for those who love rare and hidden underground sights of Paris. While the tombs of the revolutionaries themselves are rather bare, the renovation work of the entire monument is amazing, and the cramped, curved marble corridors and their stained glass windows (which give onto the underground canal Saint-Martin!) are truly impressive.

Be aware that the official, government-approved guide may take you on a whole walking tour before you get to the column: we first got a description of the Hotel de Sully, then of Place des Vosges, then a penultimate stop place de la Bastille and finally the Column. The crypt being quite small, I understand why they felt the need to "beef up" the overall experience with additional locations as "opening acts". But I would have been happier with just the column, and a more in-depth detailing of its architecture, artistic and symbolic choices that were made etc.

Still, you will learn a lot about the very quirky history of this monument, and about revolutions that were overshadowed by the more famous one in July 1789... which started with a bang at the very same spot.

This proud column dedicated to the revolution of 1830, is the centre piece of Place de la Bastille, the site of the Fortress Bastille.
