The square began construction in 1699, designed by the architect Jules Ardouin-Mansard, in honour of "Sun King" Louis XIV. The buildings surrounding the square are built in the classical style. Their ensemble was not completed until 1720. The fact is that Louis XIV spent a great deal of money building Versailles. In parallel, France fought many wars, which required huge sums to maintain the army. The "Sun King" was constantly short of money to build the Place Vendôme, so for a long time only the facades of the houses, behind which there was nothing, stood around the statue. In the centre of the square was decorated with an equestrian statue of Louis XIV, which was destroyed during the Revolution. It is named after the palace of César de Vendôme (illegitimate son of Henry IV the Great), which was formerly located on the site of the square.
Originally, the square, which had only one street, was a quiet aristocratic area (except on days when the annual fair was held). Napoleon then paved Rue de la Paix, and in the twentieth century the Place Vendôme became a place with heavy traffic.
The Vendôme Column was modeled after the Trojan Column. Its height is 44 meters, and the veneer of 425 spiral bronze reliefs was cast from guns captured from the combined armies of the British and Russians after the Battle of Austerlitz. The reliefs were created by the sculptor Pierre-Nolasque Berger. On the column was placed an artwork of Napoleon crowned with a laurel wreath, holding a sword in his right hand and a globe with a statue of Victory in his left.
After the Bourbon Restoration, the effigy was dropped and melted, and the resulting bronze was used to recast the equestrian statue of Henry IV, which had been placed on the Pont Neuf Bridge. Later, however, King Louis-Philippe ordered the installation of a new statue of Napoleon on the column in modern clothing (triangle, boots and redingot), which the king considered more majestic.
On 12 April 1871, the government authorized the removal of the imperial symbol. The column was destroyed on 8 May, retaining bronze plates with bas-reliefs. Under pressure from Adolphe Thiers, the Paris Commune decided to restore the column with the statue of Napoleon. Gustave Courbet, who initiated the demolition of the monument, was ordered to pay part of the costs. Unable to pay Courbet, he went into voluntary exile in Switzerland.

We took a walk through Place Vendôme and were impressed by the atmosphere of the place. The architecture is truly worth seeing – elegant, historic buildings that frame the square, and the Vendôme column in the middle immediately attracts attention. The square has its own tranquil elegance that perfectly matches the luxury shops and exclusive boutiques that set up here.
Although we were not here for shopping, we enjoyed the special atmosphere – the mix of history, luxury and proximity to other Parisian attractions such as the Opéra Garnier and the Louvre makes Place Vendôme an interesting destination. It was nice to just spend a few minutes on the square and let the surroundings take effect.
For us, the visit was a pleasant change and a chance to get to know one of the most famous and elegant places in Paris. Those who are nearby should definitely not miss Place Vendôme.

Place Vendôme in Paris is a very beautiful place with elegant buildings around the square. In the centre, the Vendôme column pays tribute to Napoleon’s victories, adding a historical aspect to the place. The square is also known for its many luxury shops, which give it a chic side. It is a perfect place to appreciate the architecture and go shopping upscale.

One of the most important squares in Paris, not because of its beauty/architecture, but for its historic significance.
It's a must-visit on your way from Place de la Concorde to Grands Boulevards. That being said, the square itself isn't much more than its obelisk at the center. However, there are plenty of fancy high-end stores all around.

Great place if you want to buy some jewelry as there are lots of jewelry showrooms here. Also some other high end shopping. Otherwise the square is stone and cold and unpleasant, even though it has Napoleon's column in the center. Always one of Paris' most ritzy areas, but not much fun.

Especially in the evening a fairy tale... but the brilliantly lit square is also worth a visit during the day. Dreaming away in the windows of the best jewellers in the world, and why not take a break with a coffee in the beautiful garden of the Hôtel Ritz? Maybe a little expensive, but very enjoyable... you're in Paris and then you have to give yourself something. A slightly cheaper coffee on a shitty chair somewhere else is a bad alternative.
