Our tour of the main wine-producing areas of the Loire Valley continued with Stage 6: Chinon to Saumur (Day 7 in France). We had arrived in Saumur and were on our first day here.
Our short 20-mile, 45-minute drive, from Chinon had been uneventful, and we parked-up in an underground carpark on the Pl. Saint-Pierre. Once we had found our bearings and certain key locations we decided to visit the château. We found a footpath from the southeast corner of the Pl. Saint-Pierre that took us up flights of steps to the site of the château. The views from this platform (before paid entry to the château) are alone worth the effort.
This was our fifth visit to Amboise and, up to this point, we had not visited this spectacular château with its many towers and turrets. The town of Saumur is known by it’s nickname ‘La Blanche’ (The White), none more-so that the château, because of the white stone from which all buildings in Saumur are constructed.
The château has a varied and interesting history: built as a defensive castle in the 10th Century above the river Loire, close to the confluence with the river Thouet. The castle was destroyed in the early 11th Century and rebuilt by Henry II of England in the latter 12th Century. Philippe II made Saumur part of his royal domain and strengthened the castle with buttresses. Louis IX and also Louis I of Anjou made significant alterations to the castle and by the early 15th Century is was designated as a château.
The château changed hands several times until the late 16th Century culminating with it being given to Du-Plessis-Mornay (Phillippe de Mornay) a writer and anti-monarchist. In the early 17th century the château was converted to an army barracks, and two centuries later it was converted into a state prison under Napoleon Bonaparte.
The château was listed as a Monument Historique in 1862. In 1906 the town of Saumur purchased the château from the government and converted it into a museum.
We spent a good couple of hours in this very well maintained château and walked around looking at the many exhibits in dozens of well restored and maintained rooms. Of particular interest to me was the scale models that allow you to see what the chateau looks like from all angles. The tapestries were amazing, and it was interesting to see how the quality was improved though time. The same was also true with ceramics, with basic pottery developing into fine porcelain, as in shown in collections here. The use of multi-language information plaques adjacent to exhibits certainly helped and made the visit more informative.

Unfortunately we should have read the reviews before paying (18€!) to visit the inside of the castle
A shame except for earthenware lovers
With electrical boxes spots on the frames......
No furniture to restore the atmosphere
Visit to avoid

If you don't want to read everything, summarise: Admire the castle from the outside, no need to visit the inside unless you are passionate about dishes and electric cables. Prefer the castle of Brézé, 15 minutes away, where you will get your money's worth.
In detail: After more than 20 years in the Saumurois I decided to visit the castle, which I had never heard much good... And it was even worse than I imagined! Only the courtyard and the outside are valid. Beyond the questionable side of the earthenware exhibits (you have to love) and the horse (a vast conductive wireless tote), nothing goes inside! No furnished room (yes, I know, the furniture of the castle is gone, but is it so difficult to find facsimiles or "old" furniture?), the most beautiful rooms with an admirable frame are disfigured by modern spots that do not belong there and a layout of the windows that ruins everything, and then the icing on the cake, an industrial quantity of electric cables, sockets, telephones, branch boxes and other ugly that any historic building worthy of the name tries to make disappear as much as possible. Not in Saumur. To think that the different architects of the buildings of France have let this pass while they rot the lives of the people of Saumur for a color of facade or other broutille...

Beautiful view of the castle from the boat on the Loire (for 1 superb hour) we could see it while walking in the old Saumur, to discover, unfortunately for us it was a Monday when everything was closed, too bad

A castle that is not furnished is a museum, there is a guided tour to explain its history, from the first castle to the one today.
In any case, it is very beautiful and the story is interesting. Thanks to our Guide.

The pricing policy of the castle of SAUMUR is singular.
While the vast majority of French museum spaces grant free social minimum allowances (such as the RSA-base ), the Château de SAUMUR stands out by offering the poorest neither free ... nor even a simple discount!
The reduction is still offered to jobseekers ( € 06.50 instead of 09 at full rate ). No discount for the surcharge required to access the gazebo, however.
The list of categories, corporations and other "professionals of the profession" entitled to free (or at least a reduction) treatment is, however, as long as the arm's length and includes professions which really have nothing to envy to the recipients of social minimums...
So much for the democratization of culture!

We appreciate free access to the gardens, which are very well maintained and leave the possibility to admire the castle walls and the views of the city and the Loire.
Paid internal visit and without much interest.

This castle enthroned on the upper part of Saumur and visible from very far, will delight you, its whiteness challenges you. Large adjoining free parking, which will allow you to visit or stroll in the outdoor park or go down town below. It's known and recognized as a place, as many people, but the glance is worth the moment. Beautiful view of the Loire and its vineyards, the city and its rooftops below, panoramic terraces, and this castle open to visitors. Good what is presented is not of the purest of what is found in the castles of the region (period furniture and places of history), but it is quite complete.

Bonjour,
