We saw the bridge from the Jardin des dons. It looked quite quaint as it is half destroyed. We decided to visit it at sunset only to realize that the access was closed. It was a bit disappointing.

Great history attached to the bridge.
Audio guide is very informative and a must. It's also free and entry fee is very modest.
Informative area in basement explains how they would have built the bridge quite well

We visited the Pont D’Avignon after a visit to the nearby Palais de Papes. Interesting to see and to learn the history of the bridge which ends in the middle of the Rhone. It was very windy and hot but worth seeing. Great view of the town and the river

There are such buildings, looking at which you stand like that and think: “What does this mean?” This is exactly the question that “surfaced” in my brain, flavored with beer from “Biere de la Plaine”, when from the height of the observation deck Point de Vue direction Pont d'Avignon I looked at a certain structure stretching from the left bank of the Rhone to approximately the middle of the riverbed of the Rhone. Know-it-all Wikipedia came to the rescue: as it turned out, it was the Saint Benez Bridge!!! The same legendary pont Saint-Bénézet, which is also called the Avignon Bridge (pont d’Avignon).
Or rather, the remains of the mentioned bridge structure. The history of this bridge is as vague and incomprehensible as it is interesting and almost fabulous. I won’t retell Net’s stories - there are so many of them on the World Wide Web that it’s simply boring. I will only dwell on individual facts that few people know and which I managed to find while “sifting through” mountains of information in the hope of finding something interesting.
Apparently, we should start with the fact that there are no reliable sources about the origin of the road structure, thrown across two branches of the Rhone and connecting Avignon with Villeneuve-les-Avignon. All that historians operate with are legends and traditions, and with a Christian slant. Well, you yourself understand that in those mossy times the construction of a structure of such dimensions - length 896.11 meters (980 yards) and width 4.9 meters (16 feet 1 inch) - could have been the work of either saints or evil spirits!! ! And I admit in all seriousness that in this case we could not do without either one or the other.
The most fabulous legend tells that either the Lord himself, or the angels sent by him, ordered the local illiterate shepherd Bénézet (Little Benedict, who after canonization became the heavenly patron of bridge builders) to build a bridge across both channels of the Rhone from Avignon in a north-west direction, to the possessions of , French kings. There are many different versions, but in the end, the bridge, founded by the young and not yet saint Benezet in 1177, was built in just EIGHT years!!! But!!!
Some people of science, based on the results of an analysis of the stonework at the base of the four surviving pillars and radiocarbon dating of samples of wood found in the same foundations, put forward a simply gorgeous version: before Benezet with his fantastic image of a bridge “put together out of the blue and out of nothing” here THERE WAS a stone bridge built by the ancient Romans!!!
Well, we all know very well that the latter were able to build oh-so stone or stone-wooden bridges: the 420-meter Römerbrücke in Cologne, the 500-meter Band-e Qaisar in Iran, the 721-meter Puente Romano in Merida etc. So, the ancient Roman bridge collapsed over the centuries, or rather its arches-span collapsed, but the “bulls”, that is, the supports, remained intact. And on them, either Bénézet or real Avignon residents laid wooden flooring from one bank across the island of Piot (l'Île de Piot) to the other.
This version is supported by: the scientific research mentioned above, the speed of construction of the bridge, as well as chronicle sources claiming that in 1226 during the Albigensian Crusade, when the King of France Louis VIII besieged Avignon, the local WOODEN bridge was destroyed by the monarch’s troops. It was restored after 1234 in stone with 22 arches. Alas, the terrible flood of 1668 demolished most of the bridge, after which the structure was not restored...
And only four lonely arches still rise, and the bridge literally leads to “nowhere”... Another yay for the Avignon Bridge: there are not many road “cross-river” structures in the world to which the songs were dedicated. But Pont Saint-Bénézet can really boast of this!!! Yes, yes, I mean that same legendary song-dance, dating back almost to the 15th century (the first mention of it was found in the manuscript of a clergyman named Johannes de Groheio):
"Sur le pont d'Avignon
L'on y danse, l'on y danse
Sur le pont d'Avignon
L'on y danse tous en rond
Les beaux messieurs font comm'ca
Et puis encore comm' ca...”
Just so you know: the dance that is sung in this funny song actually took place under the bridge, not on the bridge (sous le Pont d'Avignon, not sur). It is not known who originally wrote the song, but in 1853 it was set to a different melody in 1853 in Adolphe-Charles Adam's opera "The Deaf" ("Le Sourd ou L'Auberge pleine").
And who hasn't sung this funny song: Bart Simpson (voice of Dan Castellaneta in the episode "Fortresses of Wrath") and Zazu the Hornbill (voice of Rowan Atkinson in "The Lion King"), Captain Jean-Luc Picard (voice of Patrick Stewart in "Star Wars" path") and singer/actor Jean Sablon, the inimitable and inimitable Mireille Mathieu and one of the greatest comic actors of world cinema Andre Robert Rembourg (the legendary Bourville). And the song was covered by Edith Piaf, Nat King Cole and The Beatles!!!
Another very interesting fact: Pont Saint-Bénézet was very loved by painters and graphic artists!!! The brush and gravel of any master has applied this strange and slightly mysterious structure to the canvas and matrix: Louis Agricole Montagnier and Paul Signac, Camille Corot and Claude Veronet, Nikolai Roman and Alfred Lebrot, James Carroll Beckwith, Isidore Dagnan and Etienne Martellange, Robert Bonnard and Thomas Allom... Agree, pont Saint-Bénézet really “breathes” with something, if not quite infernal, then with the breath of the other world, one hundred percent... And we simply don’t see what’s happening there, beyond the end of the fourth arch of Avignon bridge...

After visiting the stunning Pont du Gard in the morning, we visited the Pont D' Avignon in the evening. Well, what a disappointment. All I can say is that the Romans built their bridges far far better that Medievil French engineers. It's worth walking up the banks of the Rhone to see the remaining arches of the bridge but it is quite underwhelming. However as you turn your back on the river and look at the Papal palace and Medievil buildings of Avignon, you are given a visual treat. I suggest you wander through the ancient city's streets , sit outside a cafe or restaurant and soak up the atmosphere.

The Avignon Bridge is a bridge over the Rhone.
Built in the 12th century, it made it possible to connect the right bank of the Rhone (home to the Pope's palace) with the left bank.
Today only 4 arches (of the original 22) and 2 chapels remain.
The bridge originally served as a border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of France.
Over the centuries, various floods have compromised the usability of the bridge, but in 1669 an exceptional flood of the Rhone took away 18 arches: since then only what can be seen today remained of the bridge.

Avignon disappoints on many levels. First and foremost when it comes to infrastructure. Particularly frustrating is the infamous "half bridge". This bridge ends abruptly in the middle of the Rhône and symbolizes the lack of completion and planning that is so typical of Avignon. Instead of providing a meaningful connection across the river, it leaves visitors with a feeling of incompleteness and disappointment.

Having come to discover Avignon for the day in its entirety, I was not able to book and visit the bridge or the Palais des Papes via the audio guide.
However, the history of this bridge remains interesting, as well as the song that made it popular.
The price remains, even with a Pass that is a little expensive, especially for a family.
However, I was able to take a few photos from both banks.
Message for the city of AVIGNON, if the latter could rebuild the Edouard DALADIER bridge it would not be a luxury because its condition leaves more than desired and denotes this beautiful Avignon city

Even foreigners know the song. The most exceptional thing is not the bridge itself but its history. Take the audio guide which explains the history of the bridge and the legend that accompanies it so that your visit is not just a stroll from one end of the bridge to the other.

It is a medieval bridge of which only 4 of the 22 original arches remain and which allowed the city to be connected to nearby Villeneuve. Very well kept.
