This is the first time I've seen a sign saying "connected cart, contactless for quest". There are small souvenirs not very expensive but it seems to bother the person who sells them when you want to buy them...
Very simple church.

To those sailing in the old port, or to those walking along its banks, Saint-Victor immediately appears as an element of ancient Marseille architecture, which is well distinguished from later constructions – early modern or modern. Indeed, it appears to be the most visible element of medieval architecture, in a city that despite its very ancient origins shows an overall appearance not prior to the last 500 years. Its crenellated towers (more suited to a castle than a church) especially attract attention.
In this case, appearances don't deceive: Saint-Victor is certainly an element of primary importance in the city's past.
Its plan lacks an essential element: the cloister, and in general the parts that made this building complex a convent: they were alienated and dismantled starting in 1793. Although soon returned to worship, the building therefore exists from this moment on as a church and no longer as a convent.
The visit to the interior highlights the main architectural peculiarity of the complex: it is made up of two overlapping churches, of which the lower one - oriented in a north-south direction - now serves as a crypt for the upper one, oriented in a west-east direction.
The lower church doesn't only appear to be the most original, having few parallels in European medieval architecture: it's the one preserving the most venerable memories of the complex, starting from its early Christian foundation and its prehistory as a catacomb. In particular, it appears to be decorated with countless late-ancient, early medieval and medieval sarcophagi, often reused, of great artistic as well as historical value. In my opinion, the fact that most of them were concentrated here only in 1968, transported from the upper church or from other locations, doesn't detract from the charm of this story; in any case, the collection is now the "most important one of Christian art of the first millennium in Provence after that of Arles" (source: internet).
There were not always two churches superimposed: the lower church, founded in the 5th century AD, remained the only one for a long time, until the current one was superimposed on it. In this last version the upper church has been consecrated according to the sources in 1251 (which explains its Gothic forms); but before it, however, another upper basilica existed in other forms, certainly already before the 11th century.
The most glorious phase of the abbey's history is placed according to scholars between 950 and 1150.
In fact, in this period the abbey - after the Saracen raids, previously nestled on the nearby Cote des Maures, had ceased - established itself as a primary center of cultural irradiation and political power. At the beginning of the period, the Benedictine order settled there, of which St. Victor immediately established itself as a "beacon" in France, in close association with Cluny. It exercises jurisdiction over hundreds of churches and “priories”, in the diocese of Marseille but also in the rest of France and abroad.
A decisive factor for the strengthening of the abbey is a papal bull by Pope Leo IX (1049-1054) establishing the dependence of Saint-Victor directly on the Holy See and not on the bishop of Marseille. This allows the abbey to be a direct instrument of papal policies, in particular with the reforming Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085); who among other things entrusts the abbey with the role of pivot for the spread of Western monasticism in Sardinia – already a Byzantine dominion – in place of the Eastern one.
These events (as well as the characteristics of the tombs and sarcophagi) are well highlighted in the two churches by plenty of illustrated panels, which therefore enable the visitor to realize the importance of what he is visiting.

Overlooks the West end of the harbour, think these are the bells you can hear throughout. Looks a bit like a castle from below.
Warning - difficult to find from the harbour; no steps or ramp up the huge hill / wall, covered with fast roads; possibly go up hill before the Criee then cut around. We got it on our return from Catalan beach. Large, quiet, peaceful. Not the oldest but cool in both senses. Just below is a square with garden, seats, cafe and toilet (near soap factory)

Interesting medieval Church located near the centre. The door on the side was open and many few people were inside. It was free to enter, but the cripta was closed.

Recommendation not to miss this really beautiful basilica.
Surely it will be less popular than Notre Dame of the Garde and the cathedral, but yield me it is really beautiful ...
Entrance to the crypt thing 2€

Abbey built in the 5th century in Romanesque and Gothic style, it was plundered, destroyed and rebuilt several times over the years.
One of its abbots was elected Pope with the name of Urban V in the 14th century and his body is still buried inside.
It is also worth visiting because it is located high up and gives a nice view of the city's old port!

The Abbey of Saint-Victor can be reached with a nice walk from the old port. Externally it really looks like a fortress and is built in Romanesque and Gothic styles. Entrance is free, but the crypt requires a fee.

How many steps are there down to the crypt and up the towers?
Skrevet 25. august 2023
We did not go up. There is a fairly long stairway down and my husband didn’t go. Alway hard to help with mobility questions. Husband is 82 and says I am wearing out his knees so he occasionally waits.

Yes saint victor with the 4th century crypt is located near the entrance of the harbour on your Rt side opposite to the new museums on the left. Once on land walk along southern side of port and go up one street. You pay a small fee to visit crypt inside church.

How much does it cost to see, and how long does it typically take to see everything? Thank you for your help!
Skrevet 28. mai 2016
No entrance charge but a small one to visit the crypt. Allow hour to hour and a half. Reasonable walk there on one of the suggested walking routes from the harbour. About 45 min.
