It must be wonderful, but the part of the place's history from the Middle Ages was closed. The part I saw was from prehistory and ancient times and it was already sensational.

Our historian Fernand and Elysabeth our expert in Civilizations and Traditions, put together a visit to the Greek city, Massilia, through the riches held in the Marseille History Museum, in the 1st arrondissement. We park in the public parking lot at the Center Bourse and go to 2, rue Henri Barbusse. This Museum is located a stone's throw from the Old Port, and Antique Port from the founding of the city by the Phocaeans, on 3500 m2, rich in 3000 works, which cover 26 centuries of existence of the oldest city in France, with exhibition spaces, 1800 m2 permanent and 150 m2 temporary, an auditorium and its documentation center. This site museum was created in 1983, following work carried out in 1967 for the construction of a shopping center, where remains were discovered. Numerous Greek fortifications, burial enclosures as well as part of the ancient port have been unearthed. and dated from three periods, Hellenistic, Roman, late. A classification of the place, in situ, as a Historic Monument, since 1972, of 10,000 m2, was necessary. The Vestiges garden has been designed to highlight the various archaeological remains of the Ancient Port. The Museum was completely renovated in 2013 with the installation of numerous multimedia tools, which allow you to delve into the depths of history, to discover places and monuments, as they once were, at the Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Discovery of the largest flotilla of ancient vessels in the world, fully restored, from the church of Malaval, from the 5th century, which allows us to better understand the beginnings of Christianity, in Western Europe, and to reconstruct the journey of the manufacture of holy oil . The testimony of the Cosquer cave and its safeguard reconstruction attests to a human occupation in the year 600 BC, with thousands of paintings and engravings which adorn the cave, inhabited there more than 27,000 years old. 13 chronological sequences form the museographic, educational and digital route of the visit, ranging from the first prehistoric occupations to recent urban developments. They unfold through Ariadne's maritime thread of the history of the port, around the archaeological site of the Bourse, like a real open-air room or museum outside the walls. A journey along the ancient Greek road, dating from the 4th century BC, to Fort Saint-Jean, which crosses the city from East to West, to meet the inhabitants of yesterday and of today, palpable, through the effects of augmented reality, 3D reconstructions, and soundscapes that take us into a time travel machine.

The structure is the historical and archaeological museum of Marseille. There is a small but interesting archaeological area outside. The interior also provides a complete history of the city of Marseille from prehistory to the last centuries.

It was a nice surprise because this museum is very well designed. It was the discovery of Greek and Roman remains in the heart of Marseille that was at the origin! You must therefore cross the garden of remains to enter. Inside, the visit is organized in 13 stages, from the origins of the Greek city to the present day, i.e. 2600 years of history. Shipwrecks found during excavations are presented along with many other artifacts from the ancient period. The funerary section is particularly well documented.
You should know that this museum is free and, in addition, we lend you an audio guide. Many touch screens are at your disposal during the museum tour, allowing you to have a lot of information.
Ultimately, I thought I would spend very little time visiting this place but it was quite the opposite because it is so rich in documentation……

Dazzling! The exhibition on the history of Marseille, from prehistory to the present day, is very rich, accompanied by small videos explaining points by points. Screening of a film, availability of staff, nothing is missing.
A museum worthy of the best and yet completely free!
Well done !

I was impressed with this museum.
It’s free to enter and the exhibits are well presented in a nice, clean , airy building. There are various videos providing more details about the history of the city.

On arrival we asked if the museum was open as it looked rather quiet . We were told it was but after going inside only a small part was open as the rest was under refurbishment which two members of staff failed to explain . So we were rather underwhelmed to say the least . Need more signs to explain to visitors .

Great modern museum and it is free. The location was to be a parking garage when the site turned out to be historic. All of the exhibits are attractive and many have English descriptions. The English audio guide was very helpful. There were a number of wall video screens which the audio device could activate plus describing the display cases. The boat remnants were amazing. We only allowed 2 hours and felt we rushed thru. A real history buff could spend much longer. This is very close to the short side of the old port and we walked easily. The Apple GPS app took us to a hotel that backs up to the site so maybe use the address instead of the name. If we had been on the other side of the street we would have seen it anyway.
