When we were considering visiting Lyon we never even knew about the "silk tour." And after we did know, we didn't jump at the chance to do any of the sites. However, we ended up doing 3 of them (didn't have time to do the 4th) and loved it. The best one was Maison des Canuts. Our guide, Maria, was fantastic and gave us a really interesting demonstration of the silk loom.

The simply furnished museum is a real gem for anyone who is passionate about the history of textiles. Visitors can learn about the production process of gold yarn, for example. The textile industry has contributed significantly to Lyon's economic recovery and prosperity. It is very worth watching the entire video - really fascinating.

Great museum, not only if you are into fabrics and textiles but also to get a general view on what made Lyon so rich in the 19th century. It is very small but all the relevant machinery is present. However, if I'd ever come back, I would opt for a guided tour because now, we lacked a little visualization with the machines. (Information is mostly in French, very little English)

Having not booked for the guided tour, I found the museum very small (2 rooms and a shop) with large paintings to read, no audio available telling you about the daily life of the Canuts. In the first room, screening of a barely audible film in French. In the second room an educational projection on the manufacture of silk thread.
To appreciate this museum, you had to want to read the information tables.
I thought I would have direct access to the traboules because maps were sold at the entrance. This was not the case.
Fortunately, seeing my disappointment, a very friendly person gave me the address of “soirie vivant” which is a real weaving workshop where you can see three looms in operation; a guide recounts the daily life of the family to which it belonged workshop and accommodation: small kitchen and mezzanine bedroom overlooking the workshop.

There is no English signage. There is a laminated card in English that is almost clear to follow. There is a lovely, expensive shop. It costs 3 euros and is on the Lyon city card.
I would not go out if your way to visit. We were in Croix-Rousse anyway and followed Google map directions to get here.

Very interesting visit. The weaving demonstration on an old jacquard loom is a rare and astonishing experience. Our guide is a passionate young woman and we really appreciated her explanations. This little museum is worth the detour. We learn a lot of things there, both about silkworm breeding and the history of canuts and the silk industry.

the guided tour is unmissable, with lots of humor. We learn a lot from antiquity to the present day! a little cold... I'm talking about the temperature. The only criticism is that
Just bring a little wool... real stuff to please our guide.

Magnificent guided tour. The museum is small so the visit is obligatory. An hour with Alix is a real joy. She answers all your questions with relevance and her passion is contagious. The group was very heterogeneous and she knew how to captivate young and old!

We thought it was a museum, intended to explain the life of the canuts, the history of their industry and the techniques. It is in reality a shop (where you can find beautiful products, it is true) with 2 rooms in which "bistanclacs" are exhibited but without any real explanation. The history of silk unfolds on a screen (in several languages - note that you can find more or less the same thing on the internet). For its part, the guided tour actually consists of a mini conference where photos are shown.

Can you tell me how far the museum is from where Avalon docks their ships? Could I walk or would I need to take a cab? We will be in Lyon May 5th and your museum is at the top of my list of things to see.
Thank you
