Mannheim is not a major city. But this is actually one of Germany's better art museums. It has a surprising number of works by important artists in its collection, particularly German Expressionists (Beckmann, Dix) and also a Van Gogh, Manet, Renoir, Monet . . . a lesser Edvard Munch, plenty of other little gems, as well as some very interesting modern installations. The staff are friendly and knowledgable. The building itself is also quite stunning. It's a great day out!

The Kunsthalle Mannheim was built in 1907 under the architect Hermann Billing's design. An extension of the Museum was carried out in 1983. It was destined to house especially a sculpture collection. That extension design was entrusted to the architect Hans Mitzlaff.
It's the right place in Mannheim to admire the city art collection as well as to behold temporary exhibitions. Among the items the permanent art collection consists of there are real masterpieces by great painters, some of them belonging to the French Impressionism, such as Monet, Van Gogh, Pissarro, and others belonging to the German Expressionism. There is also a marvellous collection of sculptures, some of them by Auguste Rodin, Henry Moore and Richard Long.
On the day I visited the Museum, 17.07.2021, there was a temporary exhibition comprising excellent works by the Belgian painter James Ensor. It included a rather complete range of Ensor's creative work. It's amazing to realise how in some of the relevant paintings Ensor works on the light to reproduce some emotions. In general through the form of the light he calls up in his paintings different moods: from light melancholy to hopeless despondency or diabolic strange aggressivity.
Upon observing the paintings depicting interiors the fact that these appear as oppressive and obsessive is outstanding. In them a zone betwixt reality and dream is shown thus setting out a demarcation between the objects and the imagination.
In Ensor's landscape pictures the forms are unclear and the flickering light makes the contours become blurred. While watching his sea landscapes one may have the feeling that the limits between water, land and air have been removed. A number of those Ensor's landscape paintings may remind the French impressionism. However, some important differences between both styles can be outlined. While the impressionists want to reproduce a specific moment, Ensor decomposes space and time and projects visions on colours and light. Such Ensor's paintings look in a high degree like being influenced by William Turner's.
Little by little Ensor shows his highly own point of view which will later reach its peak in the mask paintings. In connection with that part of his oeuvre Ensor places himself as an idiosyncratic outsider who often anticipated aspects of modernity, what can be observed in the exhibition concerned. The mask became a motif in his work, representing the merger of levels of reality as well as deception and unmasking. Ensor finds in grotesque theater characters, caricatures ans satire the adequate means of expression. In his pictures he exposes the sadness of the past time and puts up his own fantastic imagination.
In that exhibition the Scenes of the Life of Christ were very interesting. In them Ensor depicts central events from Jesus's life in 32 lithographs. To a great extent many of the individual works are somewhat conventional. However other illustrations are in contrast with the conventions of Christian art insofar as the persons there depicted are either grotesquely overdrawn or their actions are highly caricatured. For example, in the portrait of the Holy Family Mary and Joseph appear with monstrous facial features, and the baby Jesus is not a human being but a worm like creature. It's indeed exciting to realise in these lithographs, in addition to Ensor's idiosyncratic interpretation of the biblical events, his ostensibly naïve, brightly coloured imagery.
A picture included in that exhibition, to wit “Christ's entry into Jerusalem”, which in Ensor's work takes place at the Brussels carnival of 1889 deserves special attention. It shows the fascination by the socially explosive power of Jesus Christ and the painter's wish to transfer this revolutionary impact to his own time.
From the foregoing it clearly derives that the Kunsthalle Mannheim is a very interesting museum where some real masterpieces are exhibited. It's no doubt the first place where one should go after arriving in the stated German city.

Dazu braucht man allerdings Zeit.
