I had a horrific experience on December 18th, 2023 at the reading & interview with Daniel Kehlmann (event organized by the Literaturhaus Stuttgart in the State Theater) - they did NOT apologize to me for it - they also did not give me the money for my ticket or any other form of compensation (although I complained in writing).

Most miserable customer service.

I can NOT recommend visiting the Stuttgart State Theater.

The whole evening that I had been looking forward to for months was ruined for me personally, I was treated really badly & completely disrespectfully in this institution. What is written in the "Questions & Answers about your visit" is not true.

If you want to go to the State Theater,
then it is best to come before dawn & completely naked, without any luggage.

It is best to bring tickets in printed form, online and burned onto your skin - even then you may still be accused of not having a ticket & possibly of having come illegally without paying the entrance fee.

First of all, it should be noted that there were no signs for the above-mentioned event - outside it said that "Ronja the Robber's Daughter" would be played.

The event started at 7.30 p.m. - I was there at 7.33 p.m. due to delays caused by Deutsche Bahn & I was treated like a load of crap & was only allowed into the hall where the event took place at around 8 p.m.

I was then more than completely unnerved by the completely inappropriate behavior of the people working there. What they did to me was pure harassment, provocation and disrespect.

Humanity & compassion have become foreign words these days.

The staff at the State Theater completely ruined the evening I had been looking forward to for months # unfriendly and unprofessional behavior to the maximum.

More specifically, why I cannot recommend going to the State Theater Stuttgart:

I wanted to get into the hall as quickly as possible (I had my ticket in my hands), to my seat - you could see that I was definitely NOT in the mood or condition to endure any stupid discussions that I was involved in.

I was first forced to hand over my "luggage" and wanted to undress even though I was cold.

I came straight from work, had been out all day & had traveled to Stuttgart especially for the event, so I had my handbag & a bag with my laptop with me.

I had to explain that I did not want to hand over either bag because then no one would be liable for it afterwards & I have to go back to the train after the reading and cannot wait. Then an employee intervened and told me that they would be liable for up to 250.00 euros. A laptop doesn't cost that little, even used. I ended up handing in my laptop, even though I was NOT happy about it.

I was then also made aware of the sacred house rules, which I should have read through and learned by heart, according to the staff. WHO on earth goes to the trouble of reading through the house rules of an institution before attending a reading?! NOBODY! The amount of time that visitors are expected to waste or invest is too much. I am a slim person who doesn't take up much space, so there would have been enough room for my laptop.

Nota bene: I had already shown my ticket twice at this point. The employee mentioned above, who thought he had to show off, then kept holding me up and said "YOU are not going anywhere until you have shown me your ticket!" (I was then asked to show my ticket 2 more times - so 4 times in total) - the outrageous insinuation implied by this statement is already inexcusable. The employee's behavior was clearly provocative and completely inappropriate. Then I was finally allowed through to the OUTSIDE of the hall. Here I was directed to a small, quiet monitor where a reading was being shown - here I was supposed to sit down and wait until around 8 p.m. So I came to Stuttgart especially for this (I paid for train tickets and admission) to be attacked and insulted and then not see the author live once, but on a small, quiet monitor.

As I said, my evening was completely ruined, I was treated with complete disrespect and rudeness, provoked (I am a calm person - other people would have completely freaked out in a situation like that) and then not even allowed into the hall.

All the time that I have now lost because of all this trouble is already costing me in the three-digit range.

The Stuttgart State Theater is housed in an elegant building with neoclassical forms which contains three distinct theatres, opera, drama and ballet. Built at the beginning of the twentieth century, it is located in the garden of the Palazzo Nuovo, right on the banks of a lovely lake with a jet fountain. Remaining unharmed during the war events of the last century, it is in fact a beautiful building located in an equally pleasant context. Not visited inside.

Tickets only come on sale 2 months before a particular show and they sell out quickly. Supposedly you can buy them by phone (no one answered), by email or on line, but I was told that the best way to get tickets was to go to the ballet ticket office in Stuttgart which opens at 10. I arrived by 9 and there were only 2 people ahead of me. The man in front of me told me the line is usually much longer. I got 2 tickets and checked the online availability in the afternoon. They were almost sold out. I hope the ballet is ultimately worth the effort of getting the tickets.

Einfach hingehen!
Das Staatstheater selbst ist sowieso einfach schön.

A very beautiful building dating back 100 years. Very kind and helpful staff. You can rely on the German high standard of the performance. Is there any better way to spend the evening?

Opernwelt - which means opera world - every year puts together the best performances on German , which means Germany,Austria, Switzerland. Stuttgart Opera House won already the year's best titel several times.
Yesterday we saw Bellini Il Puritani. Excellent singers, beautiful chor and magical orchester. Great evening again.
