Excellent collection. So many artists represented.
If you love art, you may spend hours here. We visited on Sunday when it costs 1 Euro to enter. You can breeze through the galleries in an hour, probably, but plan on 2-3 hours, and more if you want to see everything.
Bags and coats must be checked. I stuffed my coat into my backpack and checked it for 1 Euro; I think if the coat was separate it would have been another Euro. Lockers are available; I did not notice the cost.
Photos are allowed; no flash photography. The gift shop has many postcards if you like your reproductions in that size.
I did not read the brochure before visiting about 3/4 of the galleries, and at a few points I was surprised to see certain works juxtaposed; when I took a break for a cup of coffee (very good, and the food around me looked very good as well) I saw this was intentional, and interesting. It made me think, just as it was supposed to. The art with blue plaques are those that have been intentionally moved.
It may have been the time of day I visited (mid-day), but there was some sun glare on some of the works that was a little annoying and required moving about to see things clearly. The guards were a little over-zealous; I leaned in to observe brushstrokes on a painting and was yelled at (I know not to get too close...I really wasn't that close...). But at least the works are protected from visitors, if not the sun (there were shades but they did not prevent some uneven lighting).
One thing I found confusing - there are elevators (clearly marked on the information map) that say they go to the lower and upper galleries - they do! The lower gallery is a few steps above floor 0 (exit), but if you want to avoid the steps, the elevator will take you to both floors, plus the ground-level floor that I thought was the same as the 1st floor gallery.
Restrooms (WCs) on the first floor. Don't miss the very good (but crowded and with slow service on a short line that simply didn't move) cafe.

This places houses a large collection of masterpiece paintings, personally I spent 3-4hours here and yet was still unable to finish going through the whole place. I did spend time to read the description of each paintings to understand more though maybe you are just here to look at the paintings alone you might find the time needed to cover the everything shorter.
As with many other museums in Munich, visiting on a Sunday offers you subsidized ticket prices and of course do expect a larger volume of visitors but I find it still manageable though certain sections of the museum might be more packed.
Also I believe there is a no photo taking policy here but to be honest there are so many pieces of art here I doubt you would be able to take photos of them all too.
I would recommend maybe spending just 2-3 hours of your time here skimming through the collections if you are on a tight schedule but otherwise do allocate at least 5 hours for thorough visit.

This beautiful building contains a tremendous collection of masterpiece paintings, which every person, regardless of their interest in art, can appreciate. Even those who have never studied art or paid any attention to art, will recognize some of these famous paintings. The museum is fantastic, and a world treasure. It is quite large, and I would suggest requires a minimum of two hours, and preferably more like four or five hours, to view properly. Don't miss it.

I have visited a lot of art galleries and museums in my life and this is probably the worst one ever.
The artwork collection is rather small and average as compared to other art galleries in London with free admission. Considering that I need to pay €7 admission fee to get in and the poor management of the place, I don’t think it is worth it. Also, I believe art should be accessible to everyone so I don’t agree which charging a admission fee, unless you are giving an outstanding experience for visitors.
My major criticism is that the service of the staff of the museum is appalling. There were no clear directions in the entrance as to where to buy tickets. Once you have bought your tickets, you are forced to use the lockers (which you will need €2 coin, but you will get back your coin when you take your things out of the locker) and the clock room to store your coats (which you will need pay €1).
I realised afterwards that you actually don’t need to pay for clock room if you use a bigger locker to store all your belongings and coats. So I think that is kinda of sneaky of them, since most people either don’t have a €2 coin so they have to pay for the cloakroom service, or they don’t realise that they can use the big lockers without charge.
My experience with the staff was poor. Shortly after I got through the front door, I was confronted by a staff asking me where I am going, he told me if I want to get in I need to buy a ticket, and that I cannot carry my belongings and wear my coat in the gallery.
At that time I was desperate for a wee hence I walked straight to the direction of the toilet which was no where near the entrance of the gallery, but the staff just stopped me out of nowhere. I have every intention to buy a ticket after going to the toilet.
I found it quite rude and unwelcoming.
My second encounter was when I was finding the entrance for the lower floor gallery, I accidentally drifted to the wrong entrance. A staff asked me where am I going, I said I am looking for the entrance for the lower floor gallery. He did not give me any direction and kinda of just walked off.
Again, I found it extremely rude and unhelpful.
There are way too many security guards for the number of visitors. Every time I entered into a room, the security stares at you, and you feel so uncomfortable.
I thought going to the art gallery is a stress free and relaxing experience but this is one of the most unpleasant experiences that I have encountered.
I will not recommend this art museum to anyone.

we really enjoyed seeing the old masterpieces in the galleries. We recommend that you call ahead to make sure that they are open. The first two times that we walked over, although during regularly scheduled open hours, they were in fact, not open. We weren't able to get an explanation.

I spoke about these changes with Munich residents and they also believed the Pinakothek is NOT transparent about its rules.
It is understandable that European museums want to increase security given the attacks that have occured.
However, on its webpage, the Pinakothek obscures the fact (you need to dig down 3 levels) that they do not allow you to bring in any size pocketbooks onto the premises. (Mine is 7 by 10). You are required to deposit it in a locker - for which you need a 2 Euro coin (not 1 not 50 cent). They also do not take any responsibility for the credit cards or passport that may be in your bag. If you do not have a coin, they propose leaving your bag in the coat check - with a total stranger and paying for the luxury.
Finally, I would add - German women were walking around with their purses - and the manager sputtered that was impossible, until I showed photos I had taken. She then turned pale and said she could not understand how this happened - that they needed a special tag and they did not have them.

We arrived on a weekday just at the 10 am opening and there was no line. Due perhaps to the renovations and the smaller collection on view, there did not seem to be very many people, even by noon.
