Well laid out museum, full of lots to look at and to read. Tons to learn about the emigration from eastern Europe, through this site in Hamburg, to the U.S. As a Jew and son of an immigrant from eastern Europe, I found the Jewish angles fascinating: the Jewish director of the shipping company (Mr. Ballin), as well as the large percentage of the immigrants who were Jewish. Highly recommended!

Actually an exciting topic in an exciting location, namely the original buildings of the former emigrant house.
Unfortunately, the staff are very bored and the exhibition is very poorly prepared. The audio guide is spoken in machine language and simply repeats what you can read on the display boards.
If you have the opportunity, visit the emigrant house in Bremerhaven instead! A much more exciting and interesting house!

The exhibition has been beautifully extended to the present day. The various reasons for emigration and migration are beautifully presented and explained here. You need plenty of time to see or hear everything in detail. It is great fun to see all the details. You can enter genealogical data into the computers to find out who in the family emigrated when and where. Even the ship is mentioned. The entrance fee is worth every cent

Good museum, but there is room for improvement. Unfortunately it was a bit confusing. Perhaps put up large signs with sections for a better overview. More interactive stations would make it even more interesting. But otherwise well done!

I was very interested in BallinStadt after reading a novel that was set there at that time. I generally liked the exhibition a lot, even though there was a lot of text to read, some of it repeated and unfortunately with the odd spelling and grammatical error. Reading the display boards was not always easy, partly because of the lighting, the font being too small or simply because exhibits were covering the boards. Unfortunately, I was missing a common thread from the start, even in the first house I didn't know exactly where to start reading. In the second house, a lot of things were in a wild jumble and I just lacked a bit of context - what kind of exhibits are they, what do they stand for, where do they come from? The information boards were also apparently disorganized, a text about the refugees of the Balkan War, next to it a film from the American newsreel about the construction of the Berlin Wall, next to it information about the Frank family's futile efforts to get visas for the United States. Behind the Trabi was a model and the short story of the "Cimbria", an emigrant ship that sank in the North Sea. Everything was very interesting, but in a confusing arrangement. I also couldn't explain the presence of the many typewriters and the shelves, whose drawers also offered a wealth of information. It would have been nice if there had been more information about what I was seeing here and why. In older reviews I read that the exhibition used to show a lot more about the actual emigration halls - that's what I imagined and I would have loved to see it. Unfortunately, the stories and characters mentioned there, whose fates you could follow through the exhibition, no longer exist. The topic of migration in general is also very interesting, but would have liked to have been able to stand on its own outside of the emigration stories from Hamburg onwards.
The last house then only had one room on Albert Ballin, unfortunately here too there was no information about whether it was a replica of his office. The facts about his life had already been processed several times in other texts in House 1, so only the private photos were of interest to me. It's a shame that they were presented so squashed into the corner. The tour of the museum ended immediately after this room, a very small souvenir shop and a bistro followed, but we didn't eat anything there.
Basically - nice museum, I have already recommended the exhibition to others. Nevertheless, I would like the focus to be more on the topic of emigration from Hamburg. The big topic of migration could be presented separately in building 3.

Over rated. 3 buildings, only #2 has anything one can consider an exhibit. Elmo in bldg 1 and a bunch of pictures & suitcases. Bldg 3 has a small display of Ballin’s office, the cafe and a gift shop. What little display in Bldg 2 wasn’t really much. Also the displays write up ONLY in German. Using the QR code information drains the phone battery like crazy and using google translate was frustrating.

I was here a few years ago and I thought the museum was great back then. So I went back to BallinStadt with friends and was very disappointed. Far too much text, no common thread through the exhibition, the houses. Back then the exhibition was much more interactive, now you don't even know where to start and how to process the mass of text. Unfortunately not suitable for small children. What a pity.

The exciting introduction to emigration from Hamburg in the premises used by HaPaG in the 1900s. Unfortunately, this historically most economically motivated migration is uncritically conflated with today's refugees from war and natural disasters. Although there are similarities, things should have been kept separate. But alarming that about 2% of a population will emigrate in their lifetime.
The special exhibition about Sesame Street a dozen misplaced and unrelated to the museum.
