Small large museum basically painting with works from the 12th to the 19th century, mainly by artists from the present Rhineland, Belgium and Flanders. They also have some paintings by internationally famous painters, although in the main room on the first floor where the Rembrant paintings are located the lighting is manifestly improved. I attach two truly exceptional paintings of Murillo and Ribera. Museum highly recommended

Concise and quality!!
Having surveyed museums, I can tell you that this one is concise and has nothing to envy others!!
Mostly paintings (including the famous boot of asparagus "You were missing one" that was painted afterwards). Almost no porcelain objects seen during my visit, but it's okay.
4 floors max.
There is a "special" floor for Christian religious paintings. So if you're not interested, skip this floor.
At the exit of the one-storey elevator, there is a fake Monet exposed. It is there on purpose to show that science (X-rays to be more precise and other analyses) revealed that the counterfeiter made his draft "in pencil paper" before putting paint. This must hurt the pride of the previous owners before 2008!!

This museum is only 3 modest floors, but packed with incredible paintings ( for example, 3 Breugels and many Monets), spanning the time period from medieval artists through post impressionists. Just a few blocks from the Cologne Cathedral, well worth a visit. Be sure to pick up a map/guide as it will direct you as to the proper order to visit floors and rooms.

This is a well-thought out art museum that includes some superb Impressionist works. It is absolutely worth a visit by fans of Gauguin, Monet and others.

Since I myself have worked for a long time in museums and also in service and know how easy it is to create a pleasant stay for guests, I am immensely disappointed!
Of course art is in the eye of the beholder and tastes are different. For me personally, the collection is more kitsch!
But this is not reason for my bad review but the staff! The outrageous are hardly! No "hello" no "have fun with us" or any nice phrases, for 13€ admission you can expect them already I find. The security staff is also a highlight, playing non stop Candy Crush on the phone and rummaging through the rooms to "chat" with colleagues. Calm is nowhere there. But this is still topped by the wardrobe staff! The lady scolded me for finding my backpack too heavy (5kg). I offered to put him behind the counter myself, but was then only guffawed at. My backpack was then thrown on the ground!!!! I was very lucky that I had secured everything fragile well and nothing was destroyed...
Also, there are only 4 toilets in the whole museum and these are very outdated and not very nice...

Huge and very worth seeing collection of artworks. We had only heard about it, but were surprised at the variety of works. Many many pictures and this collection sees us again, because we could not see everything. Very good!

Our family visit to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne was a delightful blend of art, history, and family bonding. As one of the city's most prominent art museums, it offers an impressive collection that spans several centuries, making it a treasure trove for art enthusiasts and a captivating educational experience for children.
A Warm Welcome
From the moment we arrived, the staff at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum made us feel welcome. The entrance is well-organized, and the friendly staff provided us with a map and some insightful tips on how to make the most of our visit. They were especially accommodating to our needs as a family with young children, offering helpful advice on kid-friendly exhibits and activities.
Diverse Art Collections
The museum’s collection is truly remarkable, featuring works from the medieval period to the 19th century. We started our journey in the medieval section, where the stunning altarpieces and religious art captivated our attention. The kids were fascinated by the intricate details and vibrant colors. We took the opportunity to discuss the historical context of these pieces, which sparked their curiosity about life in medieval times.
Moving through the Renaissance and Baroque sections, we encountered masterpieces by renowned artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Van Dyck. The diversity of the collection kept everyone engaged, and the audio guides provided rich background information that enhanced our understanding and appreciation of the artworks.
Family-Friendly Features
The Wallraf-Richartz Museum is exceptionally family-friendly. There are several interactive exhibits and activities designed specifically for children. Our kids enjoyed the art scavenger hunt, which encouraged them to find specific details in the paintings. This activity not only kept them entertained but also helped them to observe and appreciate the art more closely.
Educational Value
For our family, the educational aspect of the visit was one of the highlights. The museum does an excellent job of providing context and explanations for the artworks, making it accessible for visitors of all ages. The children’s activity booklets were particularly useful, offering fun facts and engaging questions that made the experience both enjoyable and informative.
Relaxing and Convenient Amenities
After exploring the galleries, we took a break at the museum’s cozy café. The menu offered a good variety of snacks and drinks, perfect for recharging before continuing our visit. The museum also has clean and well-maintained restrooms, including baby-changing facilities, which made our visit more comfortable.
Final Thoughts
Our visit to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum was a wonderful experience for the whole family. The combination of world-class art, engaging activities, and welcoming atmosphere made it a memorable outing. We left with a deeper appreciation for art history and some beautiful family memories. I highly recommend the Wallraf-Richartz Museum to families looking for a culturally enriching and enjoyable day out in Cologne.
Tips for Future Visitors:
* Plan to spend at least a few hours to fully enjoy the museum.
* Take advantage of the audio guides and children’s activity booklets.
* Visit the museum café for a relaxing break.
* Check the museum’s schedule for family-friendly events or workshops.

We thought we knew a lot about museums, but hadn't heard of the Wallraf before we researched where we might want to go on a day in Cologne. Why isn't this place more famous?
We went to the Wallraf because of a temporary exhibition on Impressionism and were sufficiently impressed to check out the permanent collection. It's thorough, of high quality, and very well explained. An excellent learning experience.
The Wallraf doesn't have Vermeers or famous Rembrandts the way the Rijksmuseum does, but the collections are otherwise similar and the experience of visiting the Wallraf is nicer. You don't have to edge through crowds to glance at a painting. Instead, you can linger and enjoy.
The only issue we had was with the lighting. It's up high and, for some darker canvases, shines so brightly you can't see the artwork, and for some lower works, there's a shadow across the top of the painting.

Enjoyed seeing many famous pieces here. Note that the museum is closed on Mondays and closing time is meant to be when the museum staff leaves, not when they start moving visitors out the door.

Is it allowed to take pictures without flash inside the museum?
