Located along the busy shopping area Schildergasse is Antoniterkirche which is a beautiful church named in honour of Hospital Brothers Of St Anthony who founded the church in 1350.
During world war two the church was mostly destroyed but post war rebuilding has left us with this amazing looking church nestled between the shiny modern shopping outlets.
A beautiful church, well worth checking out if your walking down Schildergasse.

AKA Church of St Anthony. Lovely church I found in the shopping district. During WWII the church sustained severe damage. I enjoyed the different stain glass they have compared to others. It was installed in 1966 and the designer was Alois Plum. The baptismal dates to the 12th century. They did save the chior window from 1520. Stop by worth it.

This is a small Gothic church in the shopping district downtown. It's easy to get to and worth the visit. The monks of the Order of St Anthony began building the church in 1350. It is well maintained, visually merges original Gothic architecture and modern simplicity. Art work in the church include the "Hovering Angel" by Ernst Barlach. Cast in 1937, it was placed in St Anthony in 1953. It had been hidden for years because the artist was forbidden to exhibit his art due to the "Degenerate Art" act during the thirties and forties. The church was turned over to Protestants in 1805. Stained glass windows are both traditional and contemporary and blend well together. It is a peaceful setting that refreshes the soul. The large modern pipe organ is also a beautiful sight and it must be awesome to hear. They have special music presentations at different times each month including one for Bach Cantatas. Check their schedule!!!

If you like art, go see the Ernst Barlach sculpture of the floating angel. It's worth the trip. Hitler destroyed the original, and it was recast after the war. Very moving.

The Protestant Antonieter Church is after the Dom the most visited church in Cologne.
1he church was built in the late 14th century in Gothic style. Remarkable is that the building was given the typical characteristics of a beggar church; instead of a tower, the church building has only a simple roof rider. The three-nave arched basilica has a polygonal choir, the northern side nave is closed by its own choir.
In th beginning of the 19th century, the building was made suitable for Protestant worship. A few pillars had to be removed in the side ships, the west galleries were built in and in the east a pulpit was placed.
By the end of the 19th century, from the point of view of preservation of monuments, the galleries and the pulpit altar were removed again.
During the second World War, the church was largely destroyed by an air raid.
Also the stained glass windows were destroyed, with the exception of a representation of the crucifixion
Directly after the war ended, the western façade and the organ gallery were completely rebuilt, while the rest of the church was reconstructed with the still standing parts.
In addition to the relocation of the roof rider (1954) and the reconstruction of the altar (1979-1980), various remediations and modernization were later carried out.
Originally, the church dud not have a baptismal font, because a beggar church did not have the baptismal rights of a parish church. This changed when the Protestants took over the building. The current baptismal font is located in the southern side ship and was made of blue stone in the 12th century.
Definitely worth a visit, especially because the chruch is located in one of Cologne's main shopping streets.
Entrance is free.

immer wieder renoviert.
Standort: Zwischen Neumarkt und
Heumarkt, eingeklemmt zwischen
Schildergasse und Weltstadthaus.
Sehr ruhige Atmosphäre, angenehm
für besinnliche Gedanken, Kaufwütige
aus der Schildergasse scheinen sich
hierhin nicht zu verirren. Interessante
Ausstattung, wie z.B. der Barlach.
Auch die sehr schöne Gastronomie
h i n t e r der Kirche war nicht so gut
besucht wie ihr Pendant direkt an
der Schildergasse. Nun, jeder hat die
Wahl....
