Supposedly an exhibition for children. But: no strollers allowed, no bags larger than a milk carton allowed, even if you have small children with you, children have to stay away from the walls because there are sockets. Absolutely not recommended. The concept would apparently be developed by older people without children. Too bad, because the exhibits have quite potential. Apart from the fact that the security staff have frightening inferiority complexes, as bossy as you are towards children and parents.

Have you ever heard about the Japanese palace on the banks of the Elbe in Neustadt? Everything there is like in a fairy tale - baroque, pseudo-Chinese style, Chinese sculptures, a roof like a Japanese pagoda! It all started in 1715, when the Dutch ambassador lived there and called it the Dutch Palace. Then the architects rebuilt it for the better, added Chinese and Japanese porcelain, and that’s how it got its name.
August the Strong loved to collect all sorts of things - Japanese furniture, Chinese wallpaper, porcelain sculptures. He wanted there to be interesting things in every wing of the palace. But not all ideas were realized due to financial problems.
Now the building is undergoing partial renovation; in addition to the building, you can go into the courtyard and admire this unusual architecture.

The building itself is nothing special, but the bar inside is really nice with delicious desserts, including vegan ones.

Al di là del fiume passando sul Carolabrucke si raggiunge la Neustadt. Girando a sinistra lungo il fiume si incontra il Japanisches Palais dalle fattezze esterne che ne giustificano il nome. All'interno un museo etnografico e uno archeologico

It was closed. The building itself is grand and overlooks the Elbe towards the Zwinger and the old part of the city. It was originally called the Holland Palace but was renamed the Japanese Palace. It became home to the Royal Porcelain collection as well as the Saxon State library and the Book Museum from 1935 onwards. Today it looks empty and lost as it stands alone like a proud retired Samurai.

A large attractive building from the outside and in need of a purpose. Had housed several museums in the past and traveling exhibits but they no longer are here. It has a small cafe, and a lot of vacant unused space. The grounds are nicely maintained and you can't beat the location right on the Elbe. It has wonderful views of the "old town" skyline. A shame it is not put to better use.

I decided that I could allow the rating of my review on the events to influence on castle rating, because these events take place on its territory and its appearance and the green zone nearby create a certain atmosphere and atmosphere of these events.
This is in a certain way a pretty good green recreation area where various events take place from time to time. Sometimes it is yoga, sometimes literary evenings, sometimes concerts of different musical groups. Events are free and attract a lot of people. Really a lot (see the review photo). Next to the area there are tables and small eateries. And on the hill nearby is a small bar. When we were there with my wife, a very good bartender worked there.

The Museum no longer displays the exhibits advertised on the website. Those interested in architecture have plenty to look at - although despite the name the Palace is definately European in concept and design!
Currently the emphasis is on Eco issues with the question of how we use of resources to built peace on the Earth rather than squander them by making war. There is much produced by young people and there is the definate feel that this building is somewhere that welcomes the young and seeks to influence them in how they shape their future.
The Cafe carries this theme forward with food and drinks sourced locally - with the exception of Coffee. The central quad has a garden growing plants that can be consumed - the aim being to educate us on the possibilities around us. Seating and cushions on the steps make this a tranquil place to stop for refreshments on a sunny day.
I hope the quad is left open to the sky as some proposals have envisaged putting a roof over it. I could not see that there was a problem with space in the building and felt that the unique charm could be lost if the central quad lost its direct connection with the open sky!
An interesting way to spend a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist attractions.
Not for everyone, but well worth the finding for those who appreciate the quirky and want to think.

Wandered in not knowing what it was, walked through and left non the wiser.
No information in English, some random 'art' exhibit (dead trees).
Centre court, which could be a fantastic space was used as a cafe. Pink deckchairs and pilate bslls strewn about.
Some nice exposed brickwork in areas which was nice to see as normally these buildings are pristine.
