Wunderschöne "Ecke"
sep. 2021

Exploring Alongside the Ancient City Walls
feb. 2020
This was part of an extended walk we did one morning. We had a few days in Cordoba so we had time to explore. Starting from the Alcazar, we walked up through the narrow, white-washed streets of the historic Jewish Quarter, to the Puerta de Almodovar gateway, then along Calle Cairun, following the medieval city walls. It was a great walk.

Calle Cairun is a pleasant stretch to stroll along and runs from the Puerta de Aldmodovar down to the Portilla de la Luna. It’s a landscaped, pedestrian walkway with the crenellated city wall on one side and traditional houses with floral balconies of jasmine on the other side.

Down the middle is a stepped stream, with a series of 3 ponds. A little further down, it turns into a canal or moat. Some parts of it had dried up when we were there but the earlier part was flowing freely.Until the 1960s, this was little more than a smelly, forgotten stream but the mayor, Antonio Guzman Reina, cleaned it up and transformed the walkway.

There are a couple of points of interest. These are:

i) the 14th century Puerta de Almodovar gateway, a solid, imposing structure, flanked by towers on both sides which are linked by a parapet walk.
ii) Statue Seneca, was born in Cordoba in the 4th century and stands, sentry-like right outside the Almodovar gate
iii) Statue of Averroes, a 12th century philosopher and court physician in Cordoba
iv) defensive towers along the wall

Pleasant Street To Stroll Down
jul. 2020
Calle Cairuan leads from Puerta del Almodovar and follows the old city walls. There are rectangular ponds of water, which were all filled with water, apart from one, along part of the way. After which there is a stream. There's a nice café/restaurant, El Olivo, halfway along, where you can sit outside and enjoy a drink, or a meal of you're hungry. It's a very pleasant street to stroll down.

A walk along Calle Cairuan is like transporting yourself into the past. It's a lovely, picturesque landscape, right next to the old Roman Walls of the city. We walked the length of the street and had a lovely time admiring all around us. It's a must see and do if you can.
