This nature reserve is quite large to traverse on foot. Visit quite well prepared because the roads around the airport are a maze. We set the GPS to Calle Moby dick and then you come out well near. Calle Guadalgorche is tricky because it apparently runs along both sides of the area and on the other side you end up in an industrial area. I had Flamingo, Stilts, Ornamented Grebe, different types of waders, there are several viewing huts with nice views.
Beware though, because right in the vicinity there is first a parking for campers, which turns into a somewhat desolate plain (with puddles with Cow Heron and Three-toed Sandpipers admittedly) that continues to a nudist beach. In that "plain" there is something of an atmosphere of crime and drugs so you should stay away from that.

Visited in Spring before. There has been a drought here and the reserve looks parched. A new cyclist/walker bridge enables the crossing of both rivers. We took the bus(see other review) but walked to Sacaba Beach and took the bus back from there. Sacaba looks derelict with many campers and lots of rubbish.
At the reserve saw an eagle, flamingoes, cormorants as well as wild fowl and lbj’s.

This is a nice, flat place to walk and see some wildflowers, native trees, and quite a few water birds. Stilts and flamingos and a few ducks. There are a couple of bird blinds to observe from. Easy to park and very close to Malaga.

Booted eagles in sky plus white Storks, lots of black winged stilts, Saw about 25 species so pleased
No facilities but there is a restaurant with toilets a ride away. Just before we left by beach area brae the bar saw a family of purple swamp hens would recommend a visit

Great for kingfishers. It’s very hot in august so we go early and park in the street closest to the west access bridge. From here we took a 20 min walk to one of the hides. Two kingfishers flying over the hide as we arrived and plenty of other birds on the lagoon. After an hour we left and headed back as too hot. We saw another three kingfishers from the bridge as we left. See photo.

A sad place. Dominated by the noise from motorways and the airport. We saw hardly any birds, but lots of motorway and construction sites.

We read some tips on when it's best to spot birds in general and we went in the morning after there had been a rainfall the previous night. This was in mid-March.
There are several transport options. If you're near the train station, take the metro; if you're near the bus station in the Soho area by the water, the best bus is bus 40 to the Sacaba Beach stop, and then walk towards the cute bridge "Pasarela Senda Litoral-Rio Guadalhorce". We tried walking the other way, attempting to get off the beaten path in vain. On Google street view, it seems like you'd be able to cross the river by a small connecting piece of beach that borders the sea. We tried this but it was completely flooded so it would be impossible unless you wanted to swim across. So then we had to walk all the way back.
We began to see cool birds as soon as we were at the edge of the reserve (before even crossing the bridge) - we saw two hoopoes, a kestrel hovering in mid-air for minutes at a time looking for prey, and a red-legged partridge.
After crossing the bridge and walking for about 5 minutes, there is a left turn and everything is fairly well-marked. There are a couple different routes so we opted to see two of the observatories: "Observatorio de Laguna Escondida" and "Observatorio de Laguna Grande". The Laguna Grande is where you get the money shot.
We had been in Malaga for a couple months and had been putting this off because we weren't sure if it would be any good but WOW... this went waaay beyond our expectations. Apart from the birds I mentioned above, we saw: northern shovelers, a group of greater flamingos, swifts, a Eurasian coot, black-winged stilts, a baby woodchat shrike, a wood sandpiper, sooo many great cormorants, and two glossy ibises. I don't know much about exotic birds so I looked up the names after getting home. The stilts and ibises looked out of place on the European continent. I'd expect to find them somewhere in Africa or maybe while playing Jumanji.
We reached the Laguna Grande around 10am and that seemed to be a good time for March. The hotter in the season it gets, the earlier you probably want to get there. It was already getting hot walking back and there was no shade anymore.
I suspect that we were so lucky partially because we carefully selected the right weather and time of day. Make sure to plan this out right, and if you like birds, it will be so worth it!!

Super place for birdwatching
Spent a lovely day here on Friday 21st Feb
Saw about 40 different birds
Not that easy to get to but the no 5 bus from Malaga is the best way by bus
But with the new bridge going up should be easier to access from the east soon

Have just spent the most peaceful and nature surrounded morning at Guadalhorce Park. Easy to find, well signed paths, great hides for bird watching - should have taken binoculars! Just lovely.

Are there cycle routes around the reserve or is it just for walkers?
Many thanks
Skrevet 30. november 2018
You can cycle along the tracks on a mountain bike. I would guess about 2 or 3 miles in total.
