This well preserved church and attached museum sits high above La Palma. It is worth the visit to view the Church artifacts of gold and silver brought from Peru, Venezuela and Cuba. In fact all of the antiquities related to the church are on display. The tiny votives are in three separate cases. The concern of long ago and today is volcanic activity. The snow referred to in the church name is volcanic ash. The wooden structures in the church and museum have been lovingly cared for by the parishioners, There is a restaurant and coffee bar surrounding this quant square.

I really loved our visit. For those who enjoy history and culture it could be considered 'The Jewel in the Crown of La Palma'. I would not have missed it. Note that the museum adjoining the church is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. To go by bus, you catch the number 33 (this used to be the 303) from Avenida de Los Indianos in Santa Cruz at the start of the town. This is where all the buses line up. You cannot miss them. The first bus stop is for the number 500 (from Los Cancajos or the airport) but walk a lot further on past the Guagua (bus) sign. The bus will be facing the wrong way, but it goes around the roundabout and comes back. Don't make the mistake that we did and wait for the bus on the Avenida Maritima as (despite Google) it does not stop there but turns left (uphill) at the Avenida de El Puente and stops in front of the central market. It then continues upwards and across the top of Santa Cruz before taking the winding road into the hills. I would not recommend walking the six kms (although fit people do).

At the top of the hill, the bus stops very near to the church. There are beautiful views over the ravines. We took a picnic. From the outside, the facade is constructed of plain brown volcanic blocks topped with a tower with hanging bells surmounted by a cross. The sides are rendered in white with two ornately carved wooden balconies. However this simple exterior belies its rich interior, hung with red brocade. It houses the oldest statue of the Virgin Mary in the Canary Islands which dates back to the 14th or early 15th century. The sculpture is thought to have been brought to La Palma either as the result of a shipwreck or by merchants or early missionaries before the Spaniards arrived. It is said to have been worshipped by the Benahoritas (the original islanders) and kept in a rocky sacred place (Morro de Las Nieves) before being transferred to this shrine built by the first conquerors to promote a degree of religious integration but also to establish Catholic rituals. The archaeological site can be seen next to the church (see photos on the museum website).

This statue plays an important role in the Bajada de la Virgen (the descent of the Virgin) celebrated once every five years, since 1680 (descent in July and return on August 5th). The oldest statue in the Canary Islands is then carried downhill to The Church of El Salvador in Santa Cruz. The next descent should be in 2025. One of the legends surrounding the statue is said to go back to 1646 when the volcano Tigalate threatened to erupt, but – according to the islanders – the Virgin sent snow to calm it, hence her name 'Our Lady of the Snows'. It also has links to a miraculous snowfall in Rome in 352 AD. and represents one of the oldest Marian devotions.

Inside, the wooden roof of the church carved with Moorish designs, is hung with crystal chandeliers. The gilded altar is spectacular with the dressed terracotta statue of Mary at the centre. She is surrounded by stars, cherubs and the heavens. Look upwards at the painted ceiling above the altar. In the church you can also find a statue of St. Michael, another patron saint. Entrance to the church is free but don't miss the adjoining museum, the Camarin de Las Nieves added in 1978 (open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, admission 4 euros). This is where the statue is dressed before her descent into Santa Cruz. It gives the museum its name 'The Dressing Room of the Snows'. She may be only 82 cm tall but this patron saint of the island of La Palma has over twenty costumes. The introductory video gives an overview of the beautiful art work and artefacts, including gold, silver, wax and steel offerings gifted by pilgrims, many returning from overseas and giving thanks for their safe journey. You can also see the wonderful jewels donated to adorn the Virgin, several of the costumes used to dress her, the palanquins to carry her through the streets and photos of the ceremony itself. An added bonus is that the wall above the altar has been constructed so that the back of the dressed statue can be seen from inside the museum. Visitors can look down into the church from above. In one of the rooms there is a beautiful depiction of the nativity with figures dating back to the 18th century. Parts of this display have been restored using sumptuous fabrics replicating the originals. I loved the use of carved wood in both the church and the museum. It glows a rich chestnut. It looks timeless even though the final stages of the museum were only completed in 2020. In the little cobbled square outside there is a small shop selling religious artefacts and a café overlooking the fountain where visitors can take a break before catching the bus back to Santa Cruz (or you can walk downhill if you have the energy).

Visited this little church and the lovely square in front of it as part of a “Santa Cruz by open top minibus” tour we had booked from our cruise ship. The statue of the Virgin is carried down into the town every five years. The whole tour was excellent and this was a very peaceful highlight, as there were no other groups up there. Our excellent German guide told us, with photographs, about the effects on residents of the recent volcanic eruption, while we sat in the café. There are reasonable toilets, and excellent viewpoints for photos.

Well that was the name of the tour-Best of La Palma. We ended up coming to this church twice on the tour. It's very important to the locals as the statue has a lot of meaning and is paraded on the island every 5 years. The stonework outside the church is amazing.
