Tripadvisors tilnærming til anmeldelser
Hver Tripadvisor-anmeldelse går gjennom et automatisert sporingssystem før den legges ut. Dette systemet samler inn informasjon som svarer på følgende spørsmål: Hvordan, hva, hvor og når. we didnt really know what to expect on our visit and were amazed at the preservation of this small synogogue from the year 300 AD.. It was a very spritual experience.

Another historical Jewish site in Spain - not to be missed. This building is down a small street in the old Jewish area. The synagogue is small with parts dating from the 3rd cen CE. It is considered the oldest synagogue in Spain . Here we can see many different levels of building with Roman walls the oldest. There is a short 10-15 min explanation given by the staff which clarifies some questions about the artifacts shown. This area is near the Cathedral and in the gothic quarter - definitely a must see.

I don't travel on December 25, no City tour, nothing
Otherwise the city tour allows you if you can get on and off to visit
Next time I will take a card by myself for the visits
They are expensive if you pay on site
Lots of beautiful places to visit

We saw the outside of the synagogue, built on the ruins of an ancient Roman structure. The building itself is very small and nondescript, because in Medieval Spain a synagogue 🕍 was never allowed to be taller or bigger than the smallest church ⛪️ in the city.

Lovely little synagogue and some history I'd not thought about. €4 is maybe a little steep if you're just measuring the 10min walk-and-talk about it and don't like how much of it is unoriginal.
But it's a pretty unique experience and feels like a thing that is worth a couple of euros to keep going. The guides are engaged and interesting and up for a conversation afterwards.
Definitely worth a pop in I think.

The guide was SO informative and knew SO much about the history not only of the synagogue, but of the Jews in Spain and Barcelona. It is a small museum but the history given by the guide made it so worthwhile and fascinating to visit. The area around the synagogue is delightful, too.

Excellent and Informative! I was lucky and fortunate that only two weeks before this ancient synagogue reopened I happened to get there when the doors opened for a tour. The history of the synagogue and Jews living in Barcelona was truly fascinating, if not tragic and all too familiar. Strikingly, unlike every other city in which Jews faced virulent anti-Semitism and extreme violence (as occurred here) the Jews of Barcelona kept the Christians "out" of their area!
Unlike the Christians who were superstitious of cats and were embarrassed to bathe frequently, the Jews kept cats who killed the mice and vermin who carried disease, and bathed regularly, protecting them from the plague that killed so many outside the Jewish community. Confused, the Christians blamed the Jews for the plague, along with other things. In 1391, 100 years before the Inquisition, they slaughtered over 300 Jews, expelling those who refused to convert.
It’s a sad tale, of course, repeated throughout Europe, but in other cities, it was usually even worse. They usually locked the Jews behind walls in the worst locations while restricting their access to jobs and other parts of life.
This is a highly worthwhile place to visit and the surrounding area is delightful.

You really dont need a private tour to go to the Synagogue. There are very qualified tour guides on site who speak many different languages. May I suggest you save your money for good Spanish wine:)

Do I need a reservation? What are the hours The synagogue is open
Skrevet 20. mai 2015
The Synagogue is closed on Shabbat and Jewish Holy days. Not sure how frequent the opening times are but you can look at the web site for more information.
If you are going without a tour, you dont need a reservation but be prepared to wait for about 15 minutes if the Synagogue has many visitors. It is very small inside.
