Historic cemetery
okt. 2021 • Par
Historic cemetery located at end of main Street, before the base station to the Cable Car. A statue to Nelson is your guide to finding it- it is directly opposite. Some very old gravestones amd whilst it is generally very well. maintained, sadly most of the gravestones are now illegible.

Small but atmospheric

This is a wonderful piece of history so close to Main Street, but so calm and beautiful. Sadly, most of the inscriptions are illegible now, but it is a must to visit.

Hidden in the heart of Gibraltar
aug. 2021 • Alene
A little cemetery hidden just off the main road between Main street and the cable car.
Set on various levels it drops down, then rises at the rear.
It is well cared for, with a number of older graves, including some from the Battle of Trafalgar.

For those looking for a bit of context to the why of Gibraltar
sep. 2020
If you are visiting this site then you will most likely have some interest in history whether it’s British, Spanish or French and whether you are a history buff or you take your lead from popular culture you won’t be able to avoid the sacrifice on all sides, a walk through the area provides.

Imperialist aspirations on all sides aside. The physical loss of lives for territory and the control of a strategic asset shows how little has changed in our world. Trafalgar like many other war cemetery is a continuous reminder of what lies at the end if inability to communicate or allows hunger for power to outstrip your regard for the lives of servicemen and women.

The name doesn't match the content.

The name of this small cemetery doesn`t correspond to the content. You might think that this is a memorial cemetery for those who died in the famous battle of Trafalgar, when the british fleet led by Nelson defeated the combined franco-spanish fleet and finally removed the question of the possibility of Napoleon's invasion of the british isles. The statue of Nelson at the entrance reinforces this view. However, nothing like that! Only two of those who died at Trafalgar are buried here. the rest of the graves belong to the dead participants of the battle of Algeciras in 1801, the sieges of Cadiz in 1810 and Malaga in 1812. And most of those buried did not die a heroic death at all, but became victims of three waves of yellow fever at the beginning of the XIX century. despite the dissimilarity, i remembered another cemetery that has not been buried since the xix century-Highgate in London. English graveyards are so melancholy that you immediately want to remember something from Keats, even though he himself seems to be buried in Rome...
