Interesting but was disappointed that the history of Madrid appears to end at around 1900. I’m sure that the twentieth century history is worth documenting

One of the most eye catching buildings in this area of this most beautiful of city's is Museo De Historia De Madrid.
A great museum that charts the history of the city, its a fascinating place to visit and as an added bonus its free to enter ,the building itself is also really beautiful, its pink paint scheme very eye catching, in the courtyard of the museum is a beautiful fountain called Fuente De Las Fama ,one of the most beautiful water features in Madrid, all in all a great museum to check out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Calle Fuencarral.

The museum is a history of Madrid mostly via the medium of art.

El Museo de Historia de Madrid ocupa el edificio del Real Hospicio de San Fernando, construido a finales del siglo XVII y principios del XVIII por Pedro de Ribera y se considera una de las obras más representativas del barroco civil español. Se exponen todo tipo de objetos, maquetas, pinturas, imágenes, grabados, porcelanas, planos, instrumentos, etc, que muestran la evolución de Madrid desde su designación como capital de España hasta primeros del siglo XX. Se inauguró como Museo Municipal en 1929 y en un primer momento se nutrió básicamente con la donación de más de 700 objetos del ingeniero y coleccionista Félix Boix. La visita se hace muy amena y está bien documentada. También se muestran diversas exposiciones temporales. La última a la que hemos ido era del pintor Francisco Pradilla que resultó magnífica

If you like history, or at least beautiful things, don't miss this museum! Is free and you can spend a good couple of hours to see everything.

Right from the 1500s to more modern day, this museum takes you through the history of the captial. There are so many bits and pieces to look at - all in chronological order.
There was only really one thing that was frustrating but I completely understand. The temporary exhibitions didn't have English translation.
However, when you don't have to pay entry, you can't complain!

This is a museum that covers the history of Madrid from when it became the capital of Spain in the 16th century up to the early 20th century. There is a lot to see and helpfully a great deal of the explanation is in English. Allow 2 hours.

Great museum with plenty to see, presented well in chronological order explaining the origins & history of the city.
Some great pieces and details proved in English & Spanish.
Staff were friendly & helpful.
Museum wasn't busy ( Wednesday Afternoon) so was able to really take some time to appreciate the items.

Nos conseguimos con la sorpresa de la exposición de Francisco Pradilla, confieso que nunca había visto un cuadro suyo en persona y es realmente un pintor extraordinario. La exposición está muy buena no dejen de verla.

I'm thinking of spending an hour or two at this museum in the morning, and I'm wondering what I can do afterwards that's in the near vicinity (i.e. walking distance)?
Prefer something low-key, like shopping, a lookout or a park or another smallish museum or gallery or anything else that's worth seeing for the first time visitor to Mad.
I guess my ideal would be an attraction that's close by, to limit time spent moving around, as only have four days in Mad.

The archives building often has small but interesting exhibits and is not too far from the museum.

Will be in Madrid in a couple of weeks. We speak very little Spanish ... do the exhibits have explanations in English or at least a something we can rent that plays an audio in English? Thanks! Jonathan
