This monument can be seen in the Plaza de la Villa in front of the Casa de Cisneros. Monument to Admiral D. Alvaro de Bazan y Guzman. He was born in Granada in 1526 and died in Lisbon in 1588. He took part in many battles and used the marines for the first time in naval operations. The bronze sculpture depicts the admiral dressed in half armor. The left hand is on the hilt of the sword, and the right hand is holding the general's baton. The statue was created in 1891 by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure.

This 3m statue of a Spanish nobleman, Don Alvaro de Bazan, wearing half-armour and sporting the fashionable breeches and ruff of the day, is located in the centre of Plaza de la Villa. The name was unfamiliar to me but in the 1500s, he was loved throughout Spain, hated in Portugal and his name sent a shiver down the spine of Spain’s enemies. He was a legendary Spanish admiral and the most famous naval hero in Spain’s history. Throughout the 1500s, he fought the Turks, the French and the Moors over 50 years, without losing a battle.
At age 17 he was given command of a Spanish naval squadron of four ships and 1,200 sailors. I found this fact astonishing. He would have barely been shaving. Nearly 30 years later, he was leading the Spanish fleet into the famous Battle of Lepanto. In a somewhat less than subtle style, the statue shows him stepping on the Ottoman flag to represent this battle.
For his achievements, the king awarded him the title of 1st Marquis de Santa Cruz de Mudela and granted the Order of Santiago.
In addition to military successes, he also perfected a convoy system to protect treasure ships bringing gold and silver from the New World back to Spain and designed new galleons, using innovations based on Portuguese caravels, to allow them to carry even more goods and treasures.
His last great project was planning for the invasion of England and building up the Spanish Armada. This would have been his crowning glory had it been successful. However he died in 1588 before the invasion was launched and in his place, the much lesser, inexperienced Duke of Medina Sidonia was given command of the fleet. One wonders whether history might have been very different if Sir Francis Drake had faced Don Alvaro at the head of the Spanish Armada. Things could have been very different had not been for Don Alvaro’s untimely death?

GETTING THERE: It is easy to walk from either Plaza Mayor or the Royal Palace and is only 5 min from either place. Plaza de la Villa is surrounded by several historic buildings (Lujanes Tower, Casa de Cisneros and Casa de la Villa) and the Convent of Carboneras Corpus Christi (where the nuns still make and sell traditional biscuits) is just around the corner. Altogether, there is enough to make it a worthwhile stop if you are in the area.

Located in Plaza De La Villa is this fantastic monument to Alvaro De Bazán ,1st Marquess Of Santa Cruz De Mudela ( 1526- 1588 ) a legendary admiral of the formidable Spanish navy.
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father who had distinguished naval careers ,at age eight he was appointed Military Commander and captain of the fortress island of Gibraltar, via his father .
He was undefeated in his naval career ,his personal galley La Loba ( The Wolf ) was greatly feared by his enemies in the naval battles he fought in ,his most notably battle victories were Battle Of Muros Bay,Siege Of Malta,Battle Of Lepanto, Battle Of Ponta Delgada and the Conquest Of The Azores ,such is the esteem this hero of Spain is held in that several ships were named in his honour.
This beautiful statue and monument is well detailed and is the centerpiece of Plaza De La Villa.
My twin brother Stephen and I were wandering along Calle Mayor admiring the architecture, dropped into Plaza De La Villa and took some photos of not just the monument but of the stunning architecture found in this beautiful square.
The monument is easy to locate on Plaza De La Villa and is most definitely well worth checking out if your planning a holiday to Madrid.

Though not from Spain, when I come across the statues especially in prominent places-I then feel the need to do some research to find out more about the person.
Great statue with a good historical backstory

Monumento de Alvaro de Bazan is yet another of the myriad of monuments in Madrid. This is dedicated to a famous successful sailor and was installed in late 19th century. The plaza where the monument is situated is nice enough, but small and is not really where you would go to spend time relaxing, but rather stop for a few precious minutes and then keep going.
