Very beautiful old town with small narrow alleys, dimly paths, small and large coffee restaurants and shops. Beautiful!

On October 21st, our ship arrived at this port, from the boat to the inner city, we walked all over the finest city center, we started from square and landed upstairs, and we saw churches all over the eastern water canal.

Trieste is a spectacular city!!! Piazza Unità d'Italia and the daring pier with dreamy sunsets, the Grand Canal and all its streets and palaces, beautiful. I also loved the Bora museum, very particular. Nearby then, many things to see, the castle of Miramare, the Giant Grotto, the Rice Mill of San Sabba etc.

Trieste is a very beautiful city and we took a tour of the city here. We started the tour of the city at the Canale Grande. The canal and its surrounding houses are a little reminiscent of Venice. The district here is called "Borgo Teresiano" - Theresa Quarter. The name refers to the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, with whose support the houses were built here from the 18th century onwards.
The large merchant ships once anchored in the Canale Grande, but today only small boats can pass under the road bridge.
Right at the beginning is the Art Deco building "Palazzo Aedes" from 1928.
It is also called the skyscraper of Trieste, although it only has eight floors. But its style and appearance should be reminiscent of its counterparts in New York, which were built there in the 1920s.
Behind it begins the row with the "Palazzo Gopcevich" and the "Civico Museo Teatrale Carlo Schmidl". The building was built in 1850 in an eclectic style.
The canal ends at the square in front of the church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, in front of which there is also a small market square.
On the right side is the Orthodox church with its round dome.
There are other interesting houses and squares around the canal. Then we walked towards the castle hill.
We walked along Via S. Spiridione, which branches off from the Grand Canal along the Orthodox church, to the Roman theater, which is located at the foot of the “Colle di San Giusto”. The theater dates back to the first century AD. It is said to have had space for 6,000 spectators.
The Colle di San Giusto, on which the theater is located, is the mountain against which the ancient city used to nestle. In Roman times, the Mediterranean Sea still reached to its foot. San Guisto, Saint Justus, is the name of the patron saint of the city of Trieste. He had unfortunately made himself unpopular with the Romans around 300 AD, whereupon they threw him into the sea with stones on top - this made him a martyr. He is said to have been washed ashore near Trieste and a kind of cult around the saint soon began here.
At the very top is the Castello di San Giusto, which was built there from the 15th century onwards. Behind the theatre, small alleys for pedestrians only lead up the hill to the castle.
On the way you pass an old city gate. It consisted of a tower, which can still be seen as a ruin today and is called "Tor Cucherna".
Finally you reach the fortress on the mountain. There is now a museum inside, and the view from above over the city and the harbor is very beautiful. In front of the fortress there is a square with several column remains. These are the remains of the old Roman church.
At one end of the columns stands the "newer" cathedral of Trieste.
The view over the city from the fortress is quite beautiful and inside the church you can see a beautiful mosaic and the rose window from the 14th century.
You can get back via the alley "Via della Cattedrale", which leads down directly in front of the cathedral. The houses here are old, but some of them are in poor condition. We continue to the Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia. There are beautiful houses here, e.g. the "Palazzo del Governo", the government palace, which is decorated with golden mosaic stones.
The town hall is in the middle of the square. In front of it is a fountain "Fontana dei quattro continenti" - fountain of the four continents. When it was built in 1750, the Europeans had not yet understood that Australia was a continent.
The Jewish quarter extends to the southwest of the large square, which is also quite interesting. Especially when the shops are open - from 4 p.m. because of the siesta.
We took a walk along the Molo Audace, which extends 200 meters into the harbor basin directly in front of the large square in Trieste. Today it is more of a monument. However, you hardly see any ships here. As it faces northwest, you can marvel at the sunset from its tip in good weather, but we didn't do that.

The old city of Trieste is very pretty, Habsburg in style, with various commercial activities and points of interest. Nice to walk around freely.
